  1. Mechanisms: New Media and the Forensic Imagination

    In Mechanisms, Matthew Kirschenbaum examines new media and electronic writing against the textual and technological primitives that govern writing, inscription, and textual transmission in all media: erasure, variability, repeatability, and survivability. Mechanisms is the first book in its field to devote significant attention to storage—the hard drive in particular—arguing that understanding the affordances of storage devices is essential to understanding new media. Drawing a distinction between "forensic materiality" and "formal materiality," Kirschenbaum uses applied computer forensics techniques in his study of new media works. Just as the humanities discipline of textual studies examines books as physical objects and traces different variants of texts, computer forensics encourage us to perceive new media in terms of specific versions, platforms, systems, and devices.

  2. A Performance of Reality. Handwriting and Paper in Digital Literature

    Digital literature emphasizes its own medium, and it brings to the foreground the graphic, material aspects of language. Experiments with the new medium and with the form of language are generally presented and interpreted within a framework of the historical avant-garde or the neo-avant-garde. This article aims to take a new perspective on the emerging digital materiality of language.

    The analysis of three works that remediate paper, the voice, the writing hand, or the physical presence of the author, leads to the conclusion that an ‘absent presence’ is given prominence. This paradoxical merging of presence and absence makes these forms of digital literature an expression of a specifically late postmodernist ambivalent stance regarding representation of the ‘real’. Complicity with the media culture goes hand in hand with an ironic approach of the mediatedness of the world and the body.

  3. Transient Self-Portrait

    Transient self–portrait is an artistic research project with the aim of creating an interactive piece.
    I take as the point of departure two pivotal sonnets in Spanish literature that are normally studied
    alongside each other, En tanto que de rosa y azucena by Garcilaso de La Vega, a 16th Century
    Spanish poet, using Italian Renaissance verse forms and Mientras por competir con tu cabello by
    Luís de Gongora, a 17th Century Spanish poet from the Baroque period. Gongora’s sonnet is a
    homage to Garcilaso’s and the styles and the cultural aspects that appear on the sonnets are very
    different reflecting the attitudes from the Renaissance and the Baroque.

  4. V sieti strednej Európy: nielen o elektronickej literatúre: /In Central European Network: not only about electronic literature:/

    This international collective monograph brings an understanding of the problematic of changes in artistic communication in the context of the cultural practices of the post-digital era and simultaneously asks new questions about it. This book presents the keystones of electronic literature research that are based, among others, on the digital character of the text, on multisensory reading, playfulness, hypermediality, experimentation and Internet communication. Its aim is also to map digital literature in the cultural environment of Central Europe. Researchers from Slovakia, The Czech Republic, Poland, Slovenia and Croatia collaborated on the publication. The monograph is a printed textual tapestry of various approaches, theories and perspectives that communicate among themselves, react to each other and together clarify the structure that literature personifies in the new media realm.

  5. 1994-96 Word Nozzle (digital materiality) (Interview with Jason Lewis)

    Jason Lewis is currently engaged with mobile apps and POEMMS created specfically for tactile ios devices. But he began programming experimental text interfaces and custom software for digital-language art-installations in the late 90s while completing a Masters at the Royal College of Art. Subsequently at Interval Research, he created "It's Alive" a text animation engine. And then in the early 21st century started OBX Labs which creates custom typographic engines.
