    As poets continue to use digital media technology, functionalities of computing extend aesthetic possibilities in documents focusing attention on crafting verbal content. Utility of these machines and tools enables multiple types of compounded articulation (combinations of verbal, visual, animated, and interactive elements). Building larger public awareness of the mechanics of digital poetry, New Directions in Digital Poetry aspires to influence the formation of writing with media in literary society of the future, specifically as a record of a particular technological era.

  2. Ocotillo

    This is an artist's talk about "Ocotillo." It is a textual and visual work. The basic idea is to read from generated arrangements of textual strings, performing real-time versions of poetic works. These are not generator works but deliberate modifications within textual fields, a continuing stage in the evolution of this particular, and literary rooted form of practice. The objective of this creative work is to push these kinds of concentrated poetic textuality further, offering it as one possible direction in the field.   3. Slow Games, Slow Poems: The Act of Deliberation in "Slow Year"

    “Video games are actions,” declared Alexander Galloway in a manifesto that stakes out the
    essential differences between videogames and other forms of expressive culture, such as
    literature, photography, and cinema. But what about videogames in which action looks like
    inaction? What about videogames in which action means sitting still? What about a videogame
    that purports to be less a game and more a meditation—a work of literature? In this paper
    I explore a prominent yet remarkably understudied example of a slow game—a game that
    questions what counts as “action” in videogames. This game is A Slow Year (2010), designed
    for the classic Atari 2600 console by Ian Bogost. Comprised of four separate movements
    matching the four seasons, A Slow Year challenges the dominant mode of action in videogames,
    encouraging what I call “acts of deliberation.” These acts of deliberation transform the core
    mechanic of games from “action” (as Galloway would put it) into “experience”—and not just
    any experience, but the kind of experience that Walter Benjamin identifies as Erfahrung, an

  5. Poetic Machines: an investigation into the impact of the characteristics of the digital apparatus on poetic expression

    This thesis aims to investigate digital methods of signification in order to examine the impact of the apparatus on poetic expression. This is done through a critical analysis of the translation process from analogue to digital, in the sense that even as we read a page we are in fact translating sight into sound. The resulting effects of this change in form are explored in order to understand their impact on meaning-making in the digital realm. Through this interrogation the comprehension and definition of ePoetry (electronic poetry or digital poetry) is extended, by exposing the unique affordances and specificities of digital expression. Digital poetry theorists such as Loss Pequeño Glazier posit that the emerging field of electronic literature is composed of interweaving strands from the areas of computer science, sociology, and literary studies. This is reflected in the interdisciplinary nature of this thesis, which necessitates an engagement with the broad areas of translation, literature, and digital media studies.

  6. Minecrafted Meaning: The Rhetoric of Poetry in Game Environments

    This essay is a synopsis of my fourth chapter from my dissertation. My research consists of game-poems and how they fundamentally alter the experience of “reading” poetry. Ultimately, my argument is that poetic experience is no longer initiated by text, but by the kinetic, audible, visual, and tactile functions in the digital environment that I label as trans-medial space; in effect, these functions sustain the poetry experience, and, thus, require the reader/user of the poem to play, rather than read, as a new form of “reading” the digital game-poem in order experience and interpret a poem’s meaning.

  7. You are the one thinking this: locative poetry as deictic writing

    This article presents an experiment in locative literature. Using the textopia system for sharing of literary texts through spatial annotation and locative exploration with mobile devices, a commissioned work was created for a poetry festival. The project aimed to explore how professional, renowned poets could contribute a deepened understanding of the locative medium. The texts produced show two important traits. Firstly, a particular use of deictic relationships, in which words like “you” and “here” take on a particular importance, indicating that these words work like entry points for fiction and markers of make-believe. Secondly, a preoccupation with relations of absence and presence, both temporal and spatial, producing poetic recreations of a location's memory and spatial connections to the rest of the world.

  8. "A Machine Made of Words by a Machine Made of Numbers"- Authorial Presence in Niemi’s Stud Poetry

    Primary Text: Marko Niemi’s Stud Poetry, a demo of which would run during the presentation.

    The paper opens with a brief discussion of the inherently conservative nature of the ELO’s definition of electronic-literature and the critical tendencies which this encourages. It has a strong focus on those critics who identify the forms which electronic literature has taken as an extension of modernist experimentation in the Twentieth Century, while disregarding the new possibilities which programmable media furnishes the poet with.

    These possibilities are manifest in Niemi’s Stud Poetry, a text which has been consistently overlooked since its publication, perhaps because it presents a challenge to the dominant critical trends. Stud Poetry cannot fully be understood in terms of print-based modernist experimentation, Dada or Burroughs, because it would be impossible to achieve without a computer program. Niemi wrote the code which ‘writes’ each poem/game.

  9. Das Cantigas como Processos Combinatórios: Protótipo de um Trabalho de Geração Textual e Intertextual a Partir da Poesia dos Cancioneiros e de Releitura de Salette Tavares

    O objectivo deste trabalho, provisoriamente intitulado "Cantiga", é lançar as bases de um projecto que possa apresentar, comparar e agenciar, por via da intertexualidade e da participação, um diálogo entre cantigas medievais (a poesia do trovadorismo) e algumas releituras que delas foram feitas por poetas portugueses contemporâneos (no âmbito do experimentalismo literário português, neste caso, um poema de Salette Tavares). Trata-se portanto de um protótipo, mais do que um trabalho finalizado. Como em outros trabalhos de investigação criativa que tenho feito, pretendo aqui fazer uso das potencialidades do computador como máquina criativa, como gestor e manipulador de símbolos numéricos.

  10. “The Dead Must be Killed Once Again”: Plagiotropia as Critical Literary Practice

    Húmus by Herberto Helder (1967) is recognized for its direct quotation from Raul Brandão’s 1921 poem of the same name. However, Helder’s work is more than the simple intertextual suggestion of a text: it transforms it, putting into motion its latent power, reviving it. As may be read in the epigraph of this work, the "words, sentences, fragments, images" from Húmus are used by Helder in order to achieve, through re-writing, a full reading of the text by Brandão. Such reading multiplies and transforms the meanings that are crystalized in the work by Brandão, thus articulating the scope the poet refers: "freedoms, freedom."
