In the intro two books are slowly rotating, when clicking on them they each lead to one of the main parts of the piece: The Path of the Fragment and The Prime Directive. The images and texts in these are of a dark sci-fi nature, the soundtrack ambient and droney.

  3. New Media Poetics: Contexts, Technotexts, and Theories

    New media poetry—poetry composed, disseminated, and read on computers—exists in various configurations, from electronic documents that can be navigated and/or rearranged by their "users" to kinetic, visual, and sound materials through online journals and archives like UbuWeb, PennSound, and the Electronic Poetry Center. Unlike mainstream print poetry, which assumes a bounded, coherent, and self-conscious speaker, new media poetry assumes a synergy between human beings and intelligent machines. The essays and artist statements in this volume explore this synergy's continuities and breaks with past poetic practices, and its profound implications for the future. By adding new media poetry to the study of hypertext narrative, interactive fiction, computer games, and other digital art forms, New Media Poetics extends our understanding of the computer as an expressive medium, showcases works that are visually arresting, aurally charged, and dynamic, and traces the lineage of new media poetry through print and sound poetics, procedural writing, gestural abstraction and conceptual art, and activist communities formed by emergent poetics.

  6. Trope

    Trope creatively intervenes in the ways that readers engage with literary texts by creating a virtual environment that is conducive to and assists the experience of reading the poetic text. The physicality of the text itself is key. Poems and short stories are repositioned rather than illustrated in spatialized, audio and visual format/s not possible in “real” life. In the trope landscape, Second Life users can negotiate their own paths through each creative environment and for example, fly into a snowdome, run through a maze in the sky, listen to a poem whispered by a phantom pair of dentures, or stumble upon a line of dominos snaking around the bay. Trope aims to expand writing networks and further develop the virtual literary community.

  7. Diagrams Series 6: 6.4 and 6.10

    Diagrams Series 6 is the latest in a life-long series of Diagram Poems, the earliest experimentations for which began in 1968. Although I have been making interactive works since 1988, Diagrams Series 6 is actually my first work written in a fully interactive way: from beginning to end in one interactive environment where the word object is playable at every stage of its development, from temporary unassembled scrap all the way to its final location in a finished piece. This environment is part of an ongoing project which I call Hypertext in the Open Air, implemented in a programming system called Squeak. It allows the works to be played on all popular computing platforms, including Macintosh, BSD, Linux, and Windows. Diagrams Series 6, consisting of the works 6.4 and 6.10, strives to return to the intense diagrammicity of some of my earlier non-interactive works, Diagrams Series 4 and Diagrams Series 3. The diagram notation acts as a kind of external syntax, allowing word objects to carry interactivity deep inside the sentence. Interactivity, in turn, allows for juxtapositions to be opened so that the layers in cluster can occupy the same space and yet be legible.

  8. From Oral Poetry to Tridimensional Poetry

    Memory defines human existence both individually and collectively: it is necessary for the evolution of the person and society. The loss of memory leads to the physical and intellectual death of identity. In order to avoid and exorcise existential oblivion, mankind has developed systems to pass on memory and preserve it. One of the oldest of these is poetry that, thanks to its rhythm and rhyme, makes the precise memorizing of a text easier. Thus it effectively communicates the deeds of heroes as well as the prayers, ideals and sentiments that characterize human beings and their culture. Society, thanks also to the heritage of knowledge that has been passed down, continues to evolve and change rapidly: the new technologies transform art, modifying the codes of language and above all the inclusion and typology of the data that constitutes the collective memory. In the era of motion pictures poetry loses some of its evocative effect and its function for transmission. The visual memory is predominant because the brain assimilates information without making the effort of concentrating and decoding input, for example from the sound to the word or from the sign to the word.

  9. Aspects of Experiencing Poetry in Digital Media

    Digital poetry uses both the machine and natural language, therefore the experience of digital poetry always lives on the borders of artifice and art or appearance and essence, where the borders fades. The essay searches for a native experience of poetry within digital media which is not a translation, representation or Ecphrasis of an existing piece of poetry by focusing on inter-activity and programming that make the poet-programmer and reader-player to meet and be involved in a poem; The essay tries to reveal the limitations of the machine language in creating a digital poem by concentrating on the syntax as an open-source consciousness of the natural language and the non-open-source nature of operating systems and compilers in the instant of writing poetry as the consciousness of the machine.

  10. LYMS

    In the video lyms (which is a non-semantic word), I have solved the question of translation in a special way: words in different languages like spanish, french, german, english and scandinavian are put together.  None of them have the same meaning, the viewer may just taste on the words.  In the first part of the video all the words are starting with f.  In the beginning the f's are exposed in a way they constitute different pictures. The system of the expositions are based on how I made concrete poetry in the sixties. Instead of repeating them differently line by line, the new technology allows me to expose them differently through time.  Then more and more letters are shown, until all the words are exposed.

    Each viewer will have a different experience dependent upon their language background, and the ability to enjoy the poetic combination of the words and the visuality together with the music.
