    ose poem is published serially through a Facebook page which gathers all of its postings in its timeline since it began on February 27, 2011. The writing is surreal at times, mixing topics and language in ways that are grammatical but obeying an almost dreamlike logic, like Gertrude Stein’s Tender Buttons. Since its launching, every single one of its daily (or almost-daily) postings begins an ends with an incomplete sentence and even word, evoking a sense that it is part of a larger thought or text, yet there is no grammatical connection between any entry and the ones before or after.

  2. Walt Whitman

    “Walt Whitman” isn’t a bot, it is a constraint an anonymous scholar took on: to tweet a portion from the 1855 edition of Leaves of Grass (almost) every day, sequentially from beginning to end, over and over. I use the word “scholar” because of the foregrounding and choice of edition (which edition of Shakespeare is Strebel using?) and the method of the constraint which forces the scholar to read each line when cutting and pasting it. This discipline has the powerful impact of keeping the scholar’s mind focused on this poet’s work on a daily basis, re-discovering Whitman’s poetry over time, and gaining insight in the process.     Sonnet One Four is a cryptographic experience. While the puzzle is relatively simple, each tweet is representative of a line of the poem, in scrambled, random order, each tweet is meant to take you on your own unique journey to matching the clue to the line of the poem. Each line is unique and thus you as an individual will ultimately take your own path to not only interpreting the poem, decoding/encoding the poem, but you will also take different implications away from the clues. The clues sometimes are metaphorical, otherwise they are literally pointed at a word or phrase within the line of the poem the clue correlates to. In summation, when you start trying to match tweets to meanings and the lines of the poem as we have assigned each tweet to, you may in fact Google different things, or think of different references and meanings true to your experiences (intertextuality). I expect people will use the internet as a main resource to decode/match each tweet to each line but that is because I made the twitter that way. However, you could use other resources or prior knowledge.

    This work creates an interactive drag-and-drop interface to perform keyword searches in Twitter and produce a manipulable visual mapping of the results. The hashtag/keywords used by Villegas are related to poetry, music, and suffering, which when selected produce a snapshot of recent tweets on the subject. Combining keywords narrows the search, offering more thematically focused results. Part of the fun of this work is in how it arranges the results into moveable lines, so readers can experience them in different sequences, placing the tweets in conversation as they form a kind of line constellation. The limits placed on the search, along with the juxtaposition of lines, and a design that responds to the reader’s clicking and dragging motions, results in a focused authorial poetic experience, though drawn from the endlessly vast and ever-changing Twitter stream.   5. Kimchi Poetry Machine

    The Kimchi Poetry Machine is powered by open-source tangible computing. When the jar is opened, poetry audibly flows from it, and readers and listeners are immersed in the meditative experience of poetry. Small “kimchi twitter” paper poems are housed inside the jar, with each poem is printed an invitation to tweet a poem to the machine handle. Eight original feminist “kimchi twitter” poems were written for the machine by invited women and transgender poets. The Kimchi Poetry Machine prototype was created through my 2014 summer fellowship from the CITRIS (Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society) Invention Lab at the University of California, Berkeley. As a response to “bookless” libraries, The Kimchi Poetry Machine reimagines how tangible computing can be utilized for a feminist participatory engagement with poetry. (Source: ELC 3)

    poem.exe is a micropoetry bot, assembling haiku-like poems throughout the day and publishing them on Twitter and Tumblr. It uses an Oulipo technique based on Raymond Queneau’s A Hundred Thousand Billion Poems. Verses are selected at random from a collection of a few hundred, and a single line is taken from each one to produce a new poem. After assembling a poem in this way, the program looks for seasonal references and uses these to decide whether to publish or reject the poem. The bulk of the corpus it reads from consists of translated haiku by Kobayashi Issa; as a result, many of the poems are coloured by Issa’s personality, in particular his fondness for snails.

  7. Poetry is Just Words in the Wrong Order

    Poetry is Just Words in the Wrong Order (2015) proposes an unconventional way of creating and presenting poetry based on improvisation, language/sound experimentation, fragmentation and randomness. Poetry as a social practice is here developed in an anti-narrative manner. Built with custom code, a computer chooses random phrases from a predetermined Twitter hashtag (e.g. #Syria) and a database of verses which are selected by the two artists (e.g. verses from poems by Arab women writing in English). The phrases and the verses from the two sources are combined partly randomly and partly following a given pattern. At the same time, sound events are being produced by estimating the number of the letters of every incoming word as well as the total volume of the incoming data. When the project is presented live, the three artists build and improvise on the poem that is created by the computer. (Source: Adapted from authors’ text)
