    ION 1 is a crowd-sourced series of 111 sound poems-in-progress by mic mac (Michael MacKenzie) in collaboration with the Post Art Poets spanning Gertrude Stein's ‘Tender Buttons’ (which can be freely read here: www.bartleby.com/140/). The work layers 7 (and in later instances as many as 32) readings of the ‘Tender Buttons’ poems into single clips. To participate, unaltered found or original human voice recordings may be submitted and will appear in subsequent installments of the poem. Send submissions to my email (below). An award system (called Copycoins) provides funds for more in-depth interaction with the poems. Statistics particular to each reading will appear in the sound-files’ [Youtube] descriptions. Each of the poems here are in their seventh installment. The playlists will grow and be modified as time passes; the poem is expected to run indefinitely - until I or the community lose(s) interest in it. Thank you.   3. Separation

    Le projet La Séparation réunit des artistes (du groupe ALIS et du collectif I-Trace), des enseignants-chercheurs et des élèves-ingénieurs (de l'Université de Technologie de Compiègne) autour de "la poésie à 2 mi-mots", inventée par Pierre Fourny. La "poésie à 2 mi-mots" s'attache d'abord à l'aspect visuel des mots et se fonde sur "la police coupable", police de caractères permettant de couper les mots en deux horizontalement et d'associer la moitié obtenue à une autre moitié pour former un nouveau mot. Très vite, Pierre Fourny a fait développer un logiciel (le combinALISons), lui offrant la possibilité de trouver un nombre de combinaisons impossibles à saisir par un cerveau humain moyen, formé à la lecture dite "rapide et silencieuse". Bientôt, la "police de l'ombre" allait également voir le jour (grâce au logiciel), révélant la présence de mots contenus dans d'autres. Aujourd'hui, une "centrale police" s'impose également. La "poésie à 2 mi-mots" est désormais une pratique éprouvée regroupant différents procédés qui permettent de jouer d'une manière originale, sur scène et au-delà, avec la forme des mots.

  4. The Idea of Order at Key West Reordered

    Plays random sections of a recording of Wallace Stevens reading The Idea of Order at Key West. Click the waveform to play the poem at the corresponding point in time. Blue and green are special colors in the poetry of Stevens. Green for the earth, for nature, for the quotidian, the worldly. Blue for the sky, imagination, the ethereal, thought and dream.

  5. Teaching Creative Writing with Python

    The course concerns the classic tension in poetry between decontextualization and juxtaposition: deciding what a text’s constituent elements are, breaking the text into those elements, and then bringing them back together in surprising and interesting ways. Students are taught not just about string processing and text analysis, but also about the poetic possibilities of using those techniques to algorithmically build new texts. Each semester, the course culminates in a live performance, in which each student must read aloud for an audience a text that one of their programs has generated.

  6. F8MW9

    F8MW9 is a collaboration between Jim Andrews and margareta waterman. F8MW9 seeks randomly to play short parts of a sound file of vocalizing by waterman. the part of the sound file played is indicated visually. as the sound plays, a visual interpretation (drawn by waterman) of the vocalizing is revealed. In fact waterman is vocalizing her interpretation of the revealed visuals, ie, the vocals and the visuals coincide. Controls at the bottom of the piece allow the user to: a) Set the maximum duration (in milliseconds) of played audio snippets b) Press an infinity button to hear the whole audio file uninterupted (click the writing at top to exit this mode) c) Click a button to change the writing/glyphs that are rendered d) Clear the screen e) Set audio volume f) Go to a related waterman/andrews collaboration. The reader can also click the graphic or waveform to play the sound at that point. Includes an interview by Andrews of waterman about the sound and glyph visuals.

  7. 'Roda Lume' by E. M. de Melo e Castro

    Roda Lume is a 2’ 43’’ videopoem, which was broadcast by the Rádio Televisão Portuguesa (RTP) in 1969 and subsequently destroyed by the station itself, and was reenacted by Melo e Castro from the original storyboard in 1986. The work is indeed surprising, as a poem that overlaps text, kinetic text, image, moving image and sound, anticipating and influencing various genres of digital hypermedia poetry mainly launched after the birth of the World Wide Web. It constructs a different notion of space-time, opening a “visual time” (Melo e Castro 1993: 238) of unfolding images and text that comprises a new reading perception.

  10. Typomatic

    Since January 2013, ALIS performing arts company, Serge Bouchardon and Luc Dall'Armellina, researchers and authors, and some students from the University of Technology of Compiègne have been actively involved in a research on the Poésie à 2 mi-mots (we could say in english : Two Half-Words Poetry or Between the lines Poetry, or Along the Lines Poetry or Cutting Edge Poetry...). This specific Poetry is an artistic practice based on special games with the shapes of letters, invented by Pierre Fourny (from ALIS). Pierre Fourny cuts words horizontally, peels them, reverses them. He shows words emerging from other words. Given than the human brain cannot devote itself to such a graphic and linguistic computational exercise, Pierre Fourny imagined a program to do so, at the very beginning of 2000. Since, the Poésie à 2 mi-mots has inspired shows, exhibitions, films, books, produced by ALIS and its partners, most of the time in a kind of handmaking way (using papers, objects, videos), making the audience forget that software was being used. In 2013, the idea was to develop the Poésie à 2 mi-mots using digital media. This project was named Separation.
