    Storyspace, a hypertext writing environment, has been widely used for writing, reading, and research for nearly fifteen years. The appearance of a new implementation provides a suitable occasion to review the design of Storyspace, both in its historical context and in the context of contemporary research. Of particular interest is the opportunity to examine its use in a variety of published documents, all created within one system, but spanning the most of the history of literary hypertext.

    EDITOR'S NOTE: This paper is interesting for the technical background it provides on many often-analysed works of electronic literature.

  2. Formalisation d’un modèle fonctionnel de communication à l’aide des technologies numériques appliqué à la création poétique

    This work develops a theoretical model of the communication which is established in e-poetry between an author and a reader by use of two computers. One is used to create the work and the other to read it. The files are transmitted with a CDROM.

    We make first a diachronic study of the field. It shows that conceptions gradually evolve. The study of visual forms shows that the mind representation of the system made by the actors are important in this communication.

    The model of linked text is purposed. The concept of text depends upon the global representation of the situation for each actor. This model is developed in cognitive and semiotic approaches. The notions of texte-à-voir, texte-écrit and texte-lu are introduced.

  3. Les Basiques: la littérature numérique

    Ce Basiques se propose d'explorer les contrées de la littérature numérique. Ses approches sont diverses et relèvent de conceptions parfois antagonistes. Elle forme un continent ancré dans des cultures variées qui dialoguent entre elles en son sein parce qu'elle les mixe et les questionne. La littérature numérique s'insère ainsi pour partie dans la continuité de démarches littéraires parfois anciennes, mais présente par ailleurs des points de rupture d'avec elles. C'est pourquoi son rapport avec les littératures issues des traditions classiques demeure conflictuel, souvent à son corps défendant, et ce, sans doute, pour longtemps encore. Que cela ne t'empêche pas, ami lecteur, de l'explorer. Elle te réservera bien des surprises, enflammera ton imaginaire comme il sied à toute littérature et saura te procurer toute une alchimie d'émotions, tant affectives qu'intellectuelles, sur des modes inattendus et vierges de toute rengaine.

  5. Le récit littéraire interactif. Narrativité et interactivité

    The expression interactive literary narrative applies to a variety of works. In its diversity, the
    interactive literary narrative raises questions on narratives, interactive architecture, multimedia as
    well as on literature. It is because the interactive literary narrative is wrought by tensions that it has
    this questioning and maybe even revealing capacity. This tension is first and foremost that which lies between narrativity and interactivity and which investigates other connections or tensions :
    - with regards to the narrative, the tension between adherence and distance can be characterized by a play on fictionalization and reflexivity;
    - with regards to the interactive architecture, the tension between assistance and control roles can
    manifest itself by a play on loss of grasp,
    - with regards to the multimedia, the tension between a text-based narrative and a multimedia
    narrative can be reached by work on text as a dynamic and polysemiotic object, and also the
    theatralization of interactive objects endowed with behaviour,

  6. BEAST

    BEAST. The Web fosters, and depends on, utter transience of attention. Extending television's effects through its much-vaunted interactivity, it has reduced writing to "content" squeezed between gaud and flash and irrelevance. In Beast, the reader directs the progress of a single text by interacting with it and its interior world of fake-3-D images. Beast tries to tap the interactive possibilities of the medium while allowing the text to be seen as a whole; the eye is a hypertext engine more sophisticated than any we could devise. But Beast also subverts itself through jarring messages and the system's periodic takeover of its own functions. A nightmarish, superficially dehumanizing system, Beast decocts much that is terrifying and unpleasant about computer technology, and about society and ourselves as the computer has built us. But this monstrosity has a humanizing core, the text, that speaks to the anxieties the system produces.

  7. Reading and Teaching Gender Issues in Electronic Literature and New Media Art

    This dissertation has as its object of research new feminist hypermedia and it is located in the fields of hypertext theory, gender studies, and semiotics. This work offers close-readings of three recent feminist hypertext fictions written in English language exploring the problematics of gender, sexuality and multiple identities: Dollspace (1997-2001) by Francesca da Rimini, Brandon (1998) by Shu Lea Cheang and Blueberries (2009) by Susan Gibb. The aim of the study is, in the first place, show how feminist hypertext fictions can be analysed: categorising the work, interpreting its nodes and lexias, emphasizing the cultural references it evokes and studying the readers’ reactions to the hypertext. And in the second place, promote the study of electronic literature as a useful tool for literature courses as well as to demonstrate the beneficial aspects of hypertexts to work with gender studies literature.

  8. Heartbeat

    Heartbeat (1999) es una reflexión acerca del estado de percepción alterado en el que se encuentran los jóvenes adictos a escuchar esclusivamente el sonido de sus corazones, tienen pánico al silencio y por ello se sienten reconfortados refugiándose en discotecas oscuras en las que entran en un estado de trance. Los heartbeaters (latedores) siempre tienen puestos los auriculares, una tendencia común en los esquizofrénicos para no oír sus voces interiores. El hipermedia incluye imágenes del pecho de una adolescente delgadísima en sujetador escuchando los latidos de su corazón por medio de un estetoscopio. La autora Dora García utiliza el estetoscopio como símbolo de los auriculares debido a su similitud estética, para analizar cómo los jóvenes utilizan la música para poder encontrar su propia identidad y asegurarse de que al igual que su corazón late la música que escuchan confirma que están vivos.

    Wordtoys is a pioneering work in the field of electronic literature in Spanish, which proposes a reading exercise as a task in deciphering that doubles as a narrative toy. It gathers together a series of works in hypertext, e-poetry, and audiovisuals made from 1996 to the present. Framed within the context of net poetry, with roots in the historical avant-garde that emphasized the materiality of signs, these works are constructed using randomness, permutability, process, games and re-writes.

  10. Au seuil du livre : les œuvres hypermédiatiques d’Andy Campbell (The Rut, Surface, Paperwound)

    Avec l’avènement de la cyberculture, on aurait pu croire, sinon à la disparition du livre, du moins à son usure en tant que modèle. Mais, dans les faits, nous assistons plutôt sur le Web à une prolifération des figures du livre. À cet égard, les œuvres hypermédiatiques d’Andy Campbell sont révélatrices. Sur son site, intitulé Dreaming Methods, il élabore une véritable poétique de la figure du livre et du papier en hypermédia. Toutefois, on le démontrera, chez Campbell, le livre fait moins l’objet d’un hommage qu’il est une figure à déconstruire par l’hypermédia (Cf. Paperwounds, et Surface). Nous nous attacherons à l’analyse précise de The Rut, présenté comme : « A self published book that never get back the front cover ». L’œuvre est composée des quinze versions du péritexte du livre simulé de Max Penn. The Rut, apparaît dans un premier temps comme un livre sans contenu, où la narration est déportée dans la fictionnalisation d’un péritexte, dont le sérieux et le formalisme se délite à chacune de ses occurrences.
