  1. From Oral Poetry to Tridimensional Poetry

    Memory defines human existence both individually and collectively: it is necessary for the evolution of the person and society. The loss of memory leads to the physical and intellectual death of identity. In order to avoid and exorcise existential oblivion, mankind has developed systems to pass on memory and preserve it. One of the oldest of these is poetry that, thanks to its rhythm and rhyme, makes the precise memorizing of a text easier. Thus it effectively communicates the deeds of heroes as well as the prayers, ideals and sentiments that characterize human beings and their culture. Society, thanks also to the heritage of knowledge that has been passed down, continues to evolve and change rapidly: the new technologies transform art, modifying the codes of language and above all the inclusion and typology of the data that constitutes the collective memory. In the era of motion pictures poetry loses some of its evocative effect and its function for transmission. The visual memory is predominant because the brain assimilates information without making the effort of concentrating and decoding input, for example from the sound to the word or from the sign to the word.

  2. Aspects of Experiencing Poetry in Digital Media

    Digital poetry uses both the machine and natural language, therefore the experience of digital poetry always lives on the borders of artifice and art or appearance and essence, where the borders fades. The essay searches for a native experience of poetry within digital media which is not a translation, representation or Ecphrasis of an existing piece of poetry by focusing on inter-activity and programming that make the poet-programmer and reader-player to meet and be involved in a poem; The essay tries to reveal the limitations of the machine language in creating a digital poem by concentrating on the syntax as an open-source consciousness of the natural language and the non-open-source nature of operating systems and compilers in the instant of writing poetry as the consciousness of the machine.

  3. LYMS

    In the video lyms (which is a non-semantic word), I have solved the question of translation in a special way: words in different languages like spanish, french, german, english and scandinavian are put together.  None of them have the same meaning, the viewer may just taste on the words.  In the first part of the video all the words are starting with f.  In the beginning the f's are exposed in a way they constitute different pictures. The system of the expositions are based on how I made concrete poetry in the sixties. Instead of repeating them differently line by line, the new technology allows me to expose them differently through time.  Then more and more letters are shown, until all the words are exposed.

    Each viewer will have a different experience dependent upon their language background, and the ability to enjoy the poetic combination of the words and the visuality together with the music.

  4. Poemas no meio do caminho

    This  is a combinatory text. There are two versions of the text – two ways of reading it: horizontally and vertically. Both versions allow the reader to save her own textual production, and then to send that production to a weblog. The reader can recombine the text according to the paradigmatic axis of language: the reader selects, the machine morphs/combines. However,  some “obligatory” options resist. By quoting Dante, Poemas no meio do caminho is a metaphor of the reading practice: “poemas no meio do caminho da leitura” (“poems midway upon the journey of reading”). It suggests an ephemeral poetic construction that appears and vanishes in a click. On the one hand these poems destroy the sacredness of the poetic language; on the other they realize the poïesis.This work has won (ex-aequo) the 4t Premi Internacional "Ciutat de Vinaròs" de Literatura Digital.

  5. Letter

    A navigational poem that presents the viewer with the image of a three-dimensional spiral jetting off the center of a two-dimensional spiral. Both spirals are made exclusively of text. The reader is able to grab and spin this cosmic verbal image in all directions. Thus, reading becomes a process of probing the virtual object from all possible angles. The reader is also able to fly through and around the object, thus expanding reading possibilities. In "Letter" a spiraling cone made of words can be interpreted as both converging to or diverging from the flat one. Together they may evoke the creation or destruction of a star. All texts are created as if they were fragments of letters written to the same person. However, in order to convey a particular emotional sphere, the author conflated the subject positions of grandmother, mother, and daughter into one addressee. It is not possible to distinguish to whom each fragment is addressed. The poem makes reference to moments of death and birth in the poet's family. Letter is presented here as video documentation of an interactive reading experience.

  6. Generative Poems

    This work is part of an ongoing series of interactive, experimental and generative poetic texts using Processing to generate visual compositions which fill the viewable space in time, with a growing pattern triggered by sound and silence.These particular poems developed with Szekely were inspired by Hansjorg Mayer’s alphabetenquadratbuch poem (alphabetsquarebook). In all the experiments, three communication systems are coming together: image, writing and code.

    It is my aim to stretch the possibilities of programming to produce generative texts activated by sound and rooted in the tradition of concrete poetry, its formal representation, production processes and progression with technological advances. As a research project, the work will have a valuable input in provoking discourses and bringing knowledge and understanding into the different explored disciplines.
