  1. Alternative Avenues in Digital Poetics and Post-Literary Studies

    This panel explores alternative avenues for education in digital poetics and electronic literary studies. The panel pieces together problems with categorical, single discipline approaches to electronic literature, critical, cultural, and technological studies looking at the pedagogical and curricular issues associated with media-based and network forms of meaning-making, storytelling, and communication. The primary questions here are: What are the conditions under which a practitioner or scholar are considered expert in the as yet undefined field of media-based expression? And: What solutions are traditional academic institutions offering? Thinking beyond, or outside the exclusive field of electronic literature the panel examines and offers potential alternatives to traditional disciplinary scholarship and accreditation. Each panelist will offer viewpoints, curricular and structural suggestions.

  2. Ergodic Characters

    While much of the attention towards ergodic fiction has been focusing on plot (either dynamic or multiple-path), its characters still lack complexity and expressiveness. In this paper we will explore two different techniques to face this problem.

    One major issue in videogames is the lack of personality in user-controlled characters. In other words, the author of a videogame cannot give a deep personality to her character, because the user will be the one who will control it. For example, you cannot design a melancholic, non-violent character, if there is a knife available in the environment. Many users would just take the knife and start a Doom-like game, turning the originally pacifist character into a serial killer. The designer can obviously prevent the user from manipulating harmful objects. However, through this arbitrary rule, users will see their freedom limited. This would also diminish the environment's coherence: why some objects can be manipulated and other cannot?

  3. Electronic Literature Directory 2.0

    The Electronic Literature Directory has served over the years as an ongoing project of the ELO. The recently revamped directory will, by the time of ELO_AI meeting, have been formally launched and will be approximately six months old. The purpose of this proposed panel is to allow sitting editors to provide a face-to-face introduction of the evolving directory to ELO community. Participants will address issues of design, bibliography, editorial process, tagging, and pedagogical relevance of the project. Vincler, a special collections librarian, will address issues of cataloging and archiving. Branda, the site programmer, will address technical aspects of the site's development. Engberg and Heckman will address the potential use of the format in a variety of educational settings. Tabbi will address the general implications of the directory for the future of the field. Special attention will be given to the continued development of the site content, and active discussion will be encouraged.

  4. Intersecting Approaches to Electronic Literature: Close-Reading Code, Content, and Cartographies in “William Poundstone’s “Project for the Tachistoscope: [Bottomless Pit]”

    What does it mean to close read electronic literature? Should one closely engage the screenic content, the programming code, or the operating patterns of a work? This panel proposes that critical analysis need not be limited to one approach or one focal point of attention, and seeks to demonstrate what can be gained when scholars collaborate to apply multiple methodologies to engage a single work. All three panelists will read the same work of digital literature, William Poundstone’s “Project for the Tachistoscope: [Bottomless Pit]” (EL Collection, vol.1), but using three different critical methods with the collaborative goal of approaches that mutually inform and enrich each other. Jessica Pressman will approach the Flash-based animation from the lens of traditional literary hermeneutics, close reading the onscreen literary aesthetics to explore the relationships between form and content as well as locate the points of aporia and mystery that traditional reading strategies are left struggling to explain.

  5. The State of the Archive: Authors, Scholars, and Curators on Archiving Electronic Literature

    Archiving electronic literature and the challenges raised by this task is a subject of discourse and action as well as a formative force in shaping the emergence of electronic literature as field of scholarly study. The ELO Visionary Landscapes Conference in 2007 dedicated a keynote position to a panel on the topic of preserving electronic literature with archivists from leading universities, and the panel was a cornerstone of discussion at the conference and beyond. The current proposal for a panel on the topic seeks to continue the conversation while extending it to voices not usually included in critical conversation about archiving— artists whose work is selected for preservation. What kinds of experiences are involved in collecting and handing over one’s oeuvre to an archivist? Does this experience affect the practice (artistic and otherwise) of future creation? Are there specific aspects of these questions and their answers that are specific to the digital nature of the objects?

  6. Cave Writing: Reshaping Writing at Brown

    In the spirit of engaging Robert Coover's contributions to the electronic literature field (one of the conference aims) and simultaneously looking at the cutting edge of our field, this panel will discuss the groundbreaking Cave Writing project that Coover has initiated at Brown. It will feature the two primary faculty the project has had over the last eight years (Coover and Cayley), two of the students who have been involved in organizing the project and creating work (Wardrip-Fruin and Gorman), and one of the critics who has looked at this work most seriously (Raley). Topics will include the history of the literary work done in the Brown Cave, the unexpected power of two dimensional typography in three dimensional space, experiences of embodied interaction and spectatorship in combination and tension with literary reading, the role of non-textual images, animation, and sound in the Brown Cave experiments, and others.

  7. Process-Intensive Fiction

    Unlike digital poetry, which has pursued process-intensive directions throughout its history, the dominant directions of digital fiction make relatively light use of computational processes. Whether one looks at the traditions of hypertext fiction, interactive fiction, or video games, the primary model is a set of connections (traveled in different manners) between largely static chunks of language. This panel explores a set of alternatives to this model. The suggested potential panelists include the author of the first book on this topic, published in 2009 (Wardrip-Fruin); one of the authors of Facade, the first fully realized interactive drama (Mateas); the creator of Curveship, a new interactive fiction tool that introduces discourse-level variation as a first-class parameter (Montfort); a prominent author, commentator, and tool builder (Short); the author of Blue Lacunae, a vast, highly variable interactive fiction (Reed); the creator of new algorithms for literary variability based on conceptual blending (Harrell); and the author of the mainstream game industry's most ambitious project in this space, Far Cry 2 (Redding).

  8. Troubadours of Information: Aesthetic Experiments in Sonification and Sound Technology

    When Ezra Pound exchanged his initial affinities for the fin-de-siècle decadence of pre-war London poetics for a growing interest in mediaeval troubadour traditions, he was looking beyond innovations in literary form and technique; there is ample evidence in much of his critical writing even at this early stage in his career that the poet was seeking a more philosophical relationship between representation, social ethos and cultural meaning. In the song and musical customs of the troubadour, as cultivated within the “Romance” languages and traditions of southern Europe, Pound identified a rare instance where an artwork’s material form inspired shared cultural sensibilities that transcended any and all context specific references or allusions. Exemplary of this level of aesthetic idealism in the troubadour romance, for Pound, are the songs of the 13th century Tuscan poet, Guido Cavalcanti (d.1300). Cavalcanti’s remarkably precise dedication to the structure and rhythm of the line, Pound informs us, demonstrates equally the “science of the music of words and the knowledge of their magical powers” (1912).

  9. Guardians of the Gutenberg Galaxy: a Cultural Analysis of Resistances to Digital Poetries

    The primary aim of this paper is to identify some of the key structural elements of resistances to digital poetries, and emergent forms of resistance to digital poetries, exhibited in data collected from publishers associated with page-based poetry (Bohn) in Britain. This will start with analyses of interview texts from a spectrum of UK poetry publishers (collected as part of the first half of my PhD studies) with a particular attention paid to those newly developed modes of resistance to the digital, and the structure of organised and disorganised resistances. A guiding principle is that analysis of resistances, cultural hostility, and the negative spectrum of taste is often as revealing as that of the positive (Bourdieu). The relationship between these resistances and other statements of taste will be interrogated, their motives interpreted. These analyses will be used as a launchpad to raise wider questions about cultural authority, distinction and guardianship.

  10. Intermediality and Electronic Literature

    The 2015 ELO Conference’s call for papers states that "[e]lectronic literature is situated as an intermedial field of practice, between literature, computation, visual and performance art. The conference will seek to develop a better understanding of electronic literature’s boundaries and relations with other academic disciplines and artistic practices."

    This roundtable discussion, led by both established and emerging e-lit scholars and artists, will explore the idea of electronic literature as an intermedial practice, looking at the topic from a wide range of forms including literature, performance, sound, computation, visual art, and physical computing. Drawing upon artistic work they have produced or studied, each panelist will provide a five-minute statement that touches on qualities related to intermediality like hybridity, syncretism, and collaboration. Following this series of brief presentations, the panelists, then, encourage engagement in a wider conversation with the audience.
