  1. Automation, APIs and the distributed labour of platform pedagogies in Google Classroom

    Digital platforms have become central to interaction and participation in contemporary societies. New forms of ‘platformized education’ are rapidly proliferating across education systems, bringing logics of datafication, automation, surveillance, and interoperability into digitally mediated pedagogies. This article presents a conceptual framework and an original analysis of Google Classroom as an infrastructure for pedagogy. Its aim is to establish how Google configures new forms of pedagogic participation according to platform logics, concentrating on the cross-platform interoperability made possible by application programming interfaces (APIs).

  2. Post-Covid-19 Education and Education Technology ‘Solutionism’: a Seller’s Market

    The Covid-19 pandemic and the social distancing that followed have affected all walks of society, also education. In order to keep education running, educational institutions have had to quickly adapt to the situation. This has resulted in an unprecedented push to online learning. Many, including commercial digital learning platform providers, have rushed to provide their support and ‘solutions’, sometimes for free. The Covid-19 pandemic has therefore also created a sellers’ market in ed-tech. This paper employs a critical lens to reflect on the possible problems arising from hasty adoption of commercial digital learning solutions whose design might not always be driven by best pedagogical practices but their business model that leverages user data for profit-making. Moreover, already before Covid-19, there has been increasing critique of how ed-tech is redefining and reducing concepts of teaching and learning. The paper also challenges the narrative that claims, ‘education is broken, and it should and can be fixed with technology’.   4. Grappling With the Actual: Writing on the Periphery of the Real

    This essay considers literary realism in relation to two of my own recent works of digital literature: This is a Picture of Wind: A Weather Poem for Phones, and The Pleasure of the Coast: A Hydro-graphic Novel. Both of these web-based works grapple with the actual world we live in: a post-digital world, in which invisible layers of data inform our daily thoughts and actions; a post-human world, of vast oceans and ceaseless winds. These works use the affordances of the internet to call attention to the historical, colonial, elemental, and material substrate of the internet; both attempt to represent the reality of the vast corpus of non-human writing which lurks beneath the mere appearance of the screen. Methodologically, this essay grapples with the material and contextual actualities of these works by turning its attention to earlier analogous moments in the intertwined histories of technology, science, and writing. In particular, this essay is concerned with the technology of the ship, the science of measurement, and the writing of the vast non-human systems of coastlines and winds.

    This essay expands on writing, thinking, talking, and walking undertaken in collaboration with London-based writer Mary Paterson. Throughout our collaboration Mary has asked questions about place, migration, identity, and belonging. Questions that are mostly unanswerable. Questions that I’ve tried to answer anyway. Because speaking about the unspeakable with someone comes as a relief. Building on a series of keynotes presented 2018-2019, this essay is structured around keyframes, a term borrowed from animation. Echoing the timeline feature common to animation, audio, and video editing softwares, this essay is designed to be read in a long horizontal scroll.

    In this text, Astrid Ensslin writes about hypertext through a medium-nonspecific sense and a more modern medium-specific meaning. She writes about what hypertext theory relates to and what its characterizations are, explaining how hypertext allows the users to interact through the use of textual and/or multimodal components.   9. A 2020 Computer-Generated Text as a Posthuman Mode of Literature Production

    A central idea of posthumanism in a technological society is the actual transition of the human towards a post-human entity, the cyborg. This entanglement between humanity and technology can not only be found in – actual and fictional – cyborgs, but also in computer-generated textproduction. Through the close collaboration between human creativity and artificial intelligence, algorithmically facilitated writing is emerging as anart form that is proving promising for literary analysis in a posthuman context. This article will examine computer-generated fiction as a new,posthuman mode of text production and use poststructuralist and related theory – mainly Roland Barthes, Michel Foucault, and Susan Sontag – toexplore the implications that such forms hold for the roles of authors, readers, and that of literary critics and scholars.

  10. Fall 2020 Editors' Note

    Last March, halfway through assembling the Spring 2020 issue of The New River, we had to adjust to a fully online mode of collaboration. Between then and now, though a tremendous amount has changed, our mission has remained the same. Since its foundation, The New River has devoted its platform to emerging and established artists exploring the intersection of digital art and literature. The COVID-19 pandemic has shed new light on what it means to run a digital journal, especially at a time when so many of our daily interactions and responsibilities have, by necessity, shifted to the digital realm.

    The work we have selected for our Fall 2020 issue helps us come into a deeper understanding of how this current period of crisis strips bare long-standing inequities and injustices, calling us to exercise a cache of empathy and compassion we might have never known before. These pieces demonstrate how art can be a guiding force through even the most turbulent times, pushing us beyond our private quarantine bubbles and back into the world, where art and creativity persist.
