    This Twitter character came to life in the “Reality: Being @spenserpratt” netprov, was christened “Tempspence” by Pratt’s followers (as a “temporary” Spencer), and lives on in this Twitter account, along with a community called The Tempspence poets. Their symbiotic existence was sustained by social media interactions of a group of people that came together through this netprov, and extended the life of the performance beyond its metaphorical covers. When “Reality: Being @spencerpratt” ended and everything was revealed, Mark Marino and Rob Wittig did the Twitter equivalent of stepping from behind the curtain to bow and thank the audience, polling them for some of their favorite poetic constraints. The enthusiasm and pleasure in the interactions launched the Tempspence Poets and the poetry games continued in earnest for a while, with @Tempspence as moderator and communication bridge, but it has slowed down almost to a standstill.

  2. Reality: Being @SpencerPratt

    This Twitter fiction netprov is based on a simple enough premise: reality star Spencer Pratt lost his his cellphone while in London for Celebrity Big Brother, and it was found by a struggling poet who began to use it in whimsical ways to promote poetry. During the three-week performance, the poet prompted Pratt’s followers to write poems based on constraint he provided, was outed as an impostor, dubbed as Tempspence, continued to develop a relationship with his readers as he shared details of his life, and eventually migrated (reborn?) to a new account, @Tempspence, as Pratt regained control of the account.     So what did this netprov occupy? A hashtag, which is not to be underestimated because it is an important portion of the MLA conversation. For two consecutive MLA conventions, “Occupy MLA” drew attention to the plight of adjuncts and moved people to discuss the issue, even if it caused irritation and backlash.To occupy the MLA hashtag is to gain access to one of the most prized plots of psychic real estate in the humanities (with thanks to Neil Gaiman for the metaphor).     This bot is a stand-in for Kazemi at the Game Developer’s Conference happening at the time of this posting in San Francisco, because he will not be able to attend for the first time in 10 years. So instead of pining away on Twitter as #GDC tweets flood his stream, he created a bot so his friends could have the pleasure of his company in their own streams, which as we know, is almost as good as his being there.     This poetic performance on Twitter is a series of observations focused on the Dart river and its environs in Devon, England. The earliest tweets on this account, which started on November 19, 2009, focused on the practicalities of walking along the river, and rapidly settled into a language based study of the river and its environs. The tweets exhibit a curious mixture of subjective and objective perceptions, writing from a very personal perspective without falling into Romanticism. It is more like Olson’s dictum that “ONE PERCEPTION MUST IMMEDIATELY AND DIRECTLY LEAD TO A FURTHER PERCEPTION,” but captured and delivered over time via Twitter.     This work consists of a web page with a selected unicode keyboard that allows people to enter symbols into a text submission box which can then be posted to Twitter under the @crashtxt account. Jim Punk is an alias for an anonymous net artist whose work embodies glitch aesthetics and pictorial uses of language and characters, as seen in ascii art. To be precise, this work is a tool for unicode art, strapped on to a social network as a mode for publication, but also as a constraint. It is also an invitation for errors, since compatibility and support for certain Unicode characters vary on different operating systems and browsers. To use this work to write texts for publication in Twitter is to engage a basic component for digital communication: the encoding of writing and its associated symbols in computational environments, which aligns it with some of the goals of Lettrisme.     This bot mines the Twitter stream for phrases starting with “when,” extracts the clauses, and joins each phrase with a randomly selected animated GIF in a Tumblr. Here’s a more detailed description from Parrish’s blog: A “#whatshouldwecallme-style tumblr” is one in which animated GIFs are paired with a title expressing a circumstance or mood—usually a clause beginning with “when.” I wrote a Python script to make these kinds of posts automatically. Here’s what it does: (1) Search Twitter for tweets containing the word “when.” (2) Extract the “when” clause from such tweets. (3) Use Pattern to identify “when” clauses with suitable syntax (i.e., clauses in which a subject directly follows “when”; plus some other heuristic fudging) (4) Post the “when” clause as the title of a tumblr post, along with an animated GIF randomly chosen from the imgur gallery. This is both a critique and homage of the #whatshouldwecallme tumblr and the meme it inspired.

With them Schneider demonstrates some of the versatility of the same kind of device when applied to different topics.     Schneider’s artist’s statement, offers the source code in addition to this description. I created @massagemcluhan, a bot that would “massage” McLuhan’s quotes—work them over completely, as McLuhan would say. I’ve noticed McLuhan’s penchant for reworking and revisiting phrases (“the medium is the message” and “the medium is the massage” being the most famous), and thought it would be interesting to rework some of these phrases by substituting various nouns into them.     On May 21, 2009, following his publisher’s suggestion, William Poundstone started his Twitter account. He seemed unsure what to do with it, as evidenced by his second tweet (a month later), in which he described himself as “an impostor pretending to be a Twitter user.” Two tweets later, on August 9, 2009, he found the concept and constraint that was to shape how he used his Twitter account and made his tweeted: “Anagram Movie Review: INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS = GO INSULT SERIOUS BRAD.” Three and a half years and 785 tweets later, he is still going strong with this idea, only occasionally varying it with a retweet or posting on a topic of his interest. The idea has several layers of complexity. Movie titles are pithy to begin with, attempting to evoke an entire work, including plot, themes, and tone with just a few words. Poundstone then applies the ancient constraint of the anagram to shape his critique of the film.
