1. Spine Sonnet

   Spine Sonnet” (the app) is an automatic poem generator in the tradition of found poetry that randomly composes 14 line sonnets derived from an archive of over 2500 art and architectural theory and criticism book titles.

   “Spine Sonnet” (the website) combines images of scanned book spines into stacks of 14 titles. Each time you refresh the browser you get a new combination.

   Opacity is a 4-part short interactive story.
   We live in an age of obsession with transparency especially in politics and business.
   But in our personal relationships, what is the point of being transparent to oneself and to others ? The following interactive narrative commends a kind of opacity which is meant as an in-between. It is the story of a journey from a dream of transparency to a desire for opacity.

3. The Use

   Mann provides access to both written and audio texts in a minimalist interface that takes a little getting used to— both online and in the iOS app. It invites clicking around, which results in fascinatingly incomprehensible speech, as the audio files become layered and words jumble together. The great thing about this layering is that, while we lose individual words and their meanings, we gain a heightened sense of the rhythms and musicality of Mann’s speech. 4. Velcro and Cupcakes

   This project used QR codes as a medium for sharing video poetry. Counter to the popular function of QR codes, this work did not aim to promote or sell any products or to gather or share information. In fact, several of the videos intentionally chose organic materials and/or analog technology to specifically counter the ‘hands off’ quality of electronic media and the intended functionality of the codes.

   This project included stickers with QR codes. The stickers were posted in public places.

   Each sticker had the same phrase:  “I [QR code] U”

   Though they looked almost identical, the stickers revealed different symbols when scanned. Each sticker connected with a video, and the video design was inspired by QR code technology.
