  1. Spring Day Notation

    How does one attempt to capture the experience of being out in nature, surrounded by hills, trees, flowers, grass, sky? About a century before this poem, Imagist poets took on the same challenge, using compressed language to recreate sensory experiences, usually from nature or art. William Carlos Williams’ masterful final book, Pictures from Brueghel (1962), modernized ekphrastic poetry by evoking even saccadic eye movements as one looked at a Brueghel painting in his free verse. Judy Malloy uses humble Web 1.0 tools, such as frames, font colors and sizes, background colors, and the meta refresh tag, along with tactical placement of poetic lines and precise scheduling, to insert us into a space and create a vivid landscape one image at a time.

  2. 10 PRINT CHR$(205.5+RND(1)); : GOTO 10

    This one-line poem code poem for the Commodore 64 produces the output you see in the screen capture above, though this short video documentation will show it in action. When executed, it randomly generates one of two characters, / or \ , repeating the operation forever, unless interrupted. This poem will be the subject of an MIT Press book which will feature 10 academics writing about this code work from different perspectives. The emergent complexity from this deceptively simple work is part of its interest. The results you see in the image and video are from emulated version, which seek to replicate the computational conditions in which this version of BASIC ran, the Commodore 64. This popular computer system from the 1980s had a video output of it of 40 columns of text, using the PETSCII character set, which meant that the code poem would produce 40 / or \ before needing to go to the next line. The monospaced font meant that the characters would line up perfectly to produce the results you see. But what do you see when you look at this output? I see a labyrinth, which I try to navigate with my gaze. I see letters, such as the E, F, P, a square-top A, O (or is it 0?).

  3. Window

    As a poetic mediation on place and experience, Window encourages you to explore the things at the edges. The ordinary moments—sounds, sights, memories, thoughts—that make an environment familiar, that make it ‘home’. My inspiration came, and continues to come so often, from John Cage—and I made this work in 2012, the centenary of his birth. His music, writing, and thinking—the way he lived his life—are a wondrous integration of art and ordinary experience. Interwoven with fragmentary texts, themselves hidden at the edges, and only available through exploration, are a separate series of short essays. Some are about John Cage and some are personal reflections as I looked, listened and collected the sounds and images that provide the material for this piece. I did this over a period of a year—listening, looking, snapping photos and recording sounds. Arranged in ‘months’, there are various ways to interact with Window. The choice is yours—listening, reading, looking, and travelling from one time of year to another. For each month the images and sounds were actually recorded in the month concerned.

  4. Living Will

    To experience “Living Will,” a story-game and interactive fiction, the reader must choose to be one of the heirs of Coltan-magnate E.R. Millhouse, who has made his fortune in the Democratic Republic of Congo. While reading, the heir navigates this unique legal instrument, slowly accruing medical and legal fees, while also grabbing bequests from her fellow heirs. The piece explores the long shadow of colonialism, the conflict minerals buried in our mobile phones, and the heart of darkness of a dying imperialist seeking to extend his control beyond the grave.

  5. Hobo Lobo of Hamelin

    This comic strip narrative in prose and verse reinvents the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, but with a character called “Hobo Lobo.” Reimagining the comic strip using Scott McCloud’s notion of the “infinite canvas” the comic goes beyond the traditional implementation of a two-dimensional strip. The innovative aspect is that he uses layers to produce a three dimensional parallax effect when the reader scrolls and rethinks the panel by centering layers on adjacent segments on the strip, as he explains in his Parallaxer tutorial. The effect of these layers and panel transitions enhances narrative continuity in panel transitions by replacing the comics gutter with the more cinematic mise-en-scène. A mixture of European folktale, political satire, and internet snark, Stevan Živadinović’s Hobo Lobo of Hamelin is one of the first examples of digital sequential art to make use of parallax and limited animation.

  6. MUPS

    MUPS (MashUPs) is an online sonic mashup engine
    built in 2012 in Flash (sorry iOS users) by Jhave
    for the sheer pleasure of simultaneity.

    MUPS has been seeded with the following content:

    1260 audio poems
    from the PennSound archives.

    These audio files are used with permission.

    How does it work: MUPS can play multiple audio files (up to 32 streams) simultaneously. It can also WEAVE those files: by playing short segments of each voice until it encounters silence, then playing the next voice. MUPS offers users control over how the WEAVE occurs.

    Issues: after extended use, MUPS can get confused.

  7. Uncontrollable Semantics

    This minimalist poem hovers right on the edge of being an art piece, because each of its 50 environments offers a different mouse-driven (aimed?) interface and music. The four words positioned on the screen’s cardinal points create a space amid them that is both conceptual and a canvas. What is the relation between words positioned in opposite spaces? How do they relate to the title to each section? How do the sound and animation relate to the words and title? Clicking on the words lead to another node in this wondrously strange hypertext… This intriguing art poem is highly entertaining, as long as you can abandon thoughts of meaning and simply enjoy playing with the piece.

    This suite of Letterist sound poems for the iOS platform offers several environments and behaviors for the letters that inhabit them.The interfaces go from simple to complex, and Piringer uses phrases with the verbs “draw, control, build, create, and connect” to guide the reader to interact and play with the letters and tools offered.   10. The Use

    Mann provides access to both written and audio texts in a minimalist interface that takes a little getting used to— both online and in the iOS app. It invites clicking around, which results in fascinatingly incomprehensible speech, as the audio files become layered and words jumble together. The great thing about this layering is that, while we lose individual words and their meanings, we gain a heightened sense of the rhythms and musicality of Mann’s speech.
