    In the golden age of electronic books (or e-books), the phones, pads, tablets, and screens with which we read have become ubiquitous. In hand around the house or emerging from pockets on trains and planes, propped up on tables at restaurants or on desks alongside work computers, electronic books always seem to be within arms reach in public and private spaces alike. As their name suggests, however, the most prevalent e-books often attempt to remediate the print codex. Rather than explore the affordances and constraints of computational processes, multimodal interfaces, network access, global positioning, or augmented reality, electronic books instead attempt to simulate longstanding assumptions about reading and writing. Nevertheless, the form and content of literature are continually expanding through those experimental practices digital-born writing and electronic literature. Electronic literature (or e-lit) occurs at the intersection between technology and textuality.

  4. Cybertextuality

    Cybertexts are the pairs of utterance-message and feedback-response that pass from speaker-writer to listener-reader, and back, through a channel awash with noise. Cybertextuality is a broad theory of communication that draws on the cybernetics of Norbert Wiener (1894-1964) to describe how we manage these dual message-feedback cybertexts into being and that helps explain the publishing, the transmission, and the reception of all speech and text. Recursiveness, complexity, and homeostasis are three principles of cybertextuality. Because we are cognitively blind to how we create most utterances (language belongs to procedural memory, which can be recalled only by enacting it), we unselfconsciously model even our own language acts (not just ones by other people) simply in order to recognize and revise them. We observe or receive our own language acts before anyone else does. Our feedback is to represent those acts meaningfully. Mental modelling, as a feedback mechanism, is recursive. Our every utterance or output serves as input to another (possibly silent) uttering. Messaging-feedback is also complex.

  5. Cybernated Art

    In the 1960s, Nam June Paik embraced the medium of television, and became the founding father of video art. His long and prolific relationship with electronic media began notably with the cellist Charlotte Moorman, in controversial performance works such as Opera Sextronique from 1967. Paik's oeuvre later included television sculpture, satellite art, robotic devices, and giant video walls with synthesized imagery pulsating from stacks of cathode-ray tubes.

    Paik suggests that art should embrace the technologies of the information society. Paik presents himself as artist-shaman, synthesizing art and technology in an effort to exorcise the demons of a mass-consumer, technology obsessed society. Paik uses rejected media artifacts in his work, such as vintage television sets. His video works, with their liberal doses of "cybernated shock and catharsis," are poignantly cynical pieces that comment on an American techno-culture dominated by starry-eyed optimists.

  6. A New Literary Information System: GPS, The Global Poetic System: Bringing Electronic Literature To The Greater Public

    The Global Poetic System (GPS) is an information system that explores four types of interfaces (mobile phones, PDA, desktop applications, and Web application) and three manners of reading (literary adaptive texts, literary classic texts, texts constructed by community interaction) through an interface that delivers literary content based upon real-time geographic positioning. This project is being executed by the Open University of Catalonia (UOC, Spain) and the Advanced Research Center in Artificial Intelligence (CAVIIAR, USA) thanks to a 200,000€ grant awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Industry and Technology for one year of execution during 2008. The GPS is an ambitious project that tries to incorporate the literature into the space of digital technologies, bringing the literature over to the greater public. It presents one of the most complex multi-channel, multimodal information systems to date. This talk will offer a preview and a sample of the text.

  10. Pop Subversion in Electronic Literature

    The “vernacular” comes from the Latin verna meaning “home-born slave.” In its common understanding, it refers to the native speech, and has long been associated with “populism.” Many assumptions about digital discourse in the United States are framed by the pragmatics pop forms, driving even political and intellectual discourse into what behavioral scientists call “system 1 cognition”: short-term, unreflective, reactive, and, ultimately, manipulable thinking. This paper, drawing on critical writing developed by Justin Katko and Sandy Baldwin, will discuss choice architecture and strategies of détournement in electronic literature. Against the heavy presence of tagging in social media spaces and graphic design in public spaces, this presentation will analyze Typomatic by Serge Bouchardon, et. al, as a form of digital writing that subverts the reductive tendencies of instrumental signification in favor of ambiguity and excess at the level of the word. Even as I draft this proposal, I find myself wanting to describe the it as a work, for it is a concept, an installation, executed by artists and given a title: Typomatic.
