    This poem, together with 'Square 01', is part of an ongoing series of interactive, experimental and generative poetic texts to generate visual compositions, which fill the viewable space in time, with a growing pattern triggered by sound and silence. If the sound is loud the letters become thicker and bigger. As in many of my pieces, the poems don’t exist until the viewer interacts with them. String_code is the visual representation of the code in Square 01, this is why I am presenting both as a pair. In all poems, the three communication systems converge: image, writing and code. Square 01 is formed by the western alphabet. All the letters appear lineally, in rows, superimposed over each other, until they eventually become an indistinguishable blob. It was my intention to explore the tradition of concrete poetry, its formal representations and production processes using the programming language of Processing. Taking model in Hansjorg Mayer’s alphabetenquadratbuch poem, its minimalist visual form of multiple layers, the desire to escape from the linguistic through the obliteration of the letters and the encapsulation in it by the square.

  2. Generative Poems

    This work is part of an ongoing series of interactive, experimental and generative poetic texts using Processing to generate visual compositions which fill the viewable space in time, with a growing pattern triggered by sound and silence.These particular poems developed with Szekely were inspired by Hansjorg Mayer’s alphabetenquadratbuch poem (alphabetsquarebook). In all the experiments, three communication systems are coming together: image, writing and code.

    It is my aim to stretch the possibilities of programming to produce generative texts activated by sound and rooted in the tradition of concrete poetry, its formal representation, production processes and progression with technological advances. As a research project, the work will have a valuable input in provoking discourses and bringing knowledge and understanding into the different explored disciplines.

  4. Public Love Poem

    The work is a screenshot in jpg format of a draft email in a google mail inbox. It comprises the unsent reply to a previous message in which a poem has been inserted alongside the "quotation" arrows commonly used in email programs to designate historical comments. It includes a shot of the google ads that have been generated by emailing the poem to the recipient and receiving it back.

  5. Enter:in' Wodies

    Enter:in' Wodies is the intermedial installation, where the person interacts with the work via motion sensing input device Kinect. The main idea is to imagine the person, whose interiour you would desire to read. You can choose from two models – man or woman. After the first text that explains the initiation to enter other person, you interact with the work by choosing the body parts by touching with your hands the imaginary being. The body parts refer to seven organ systems. To reveal the poems connected with the particular human biological systems, you have to make movements with your hands to uncover the words (interaction area is defined by your physical distance of hand from the sensor). The revelation of each part brings about the biological image of its cell textures, of the music (which has its unique corresponding sound that goes with the main melody) and of the poetic text about the system's exceptionality. After having read all the pieces, the final text appears that informs about your leaving the other person's body.

  6. Rememori

    Rememori is a degenerative memory game created in Flash. It’s poetics play out some of the affects and effects of dementia on an intimate circle of characters. Juggling with point-of-view and the process of identification, the Rememori player becomes entangled in a struggle for accurate recall, orientation, attention and the search for meaning. In such situations, where does empathy lie and how does the player cope? Inevitably, it’s a contrary game - there can be no winners. 

    According to the Alzheimer’s Research Trust, 42% of the UK population (25 million people) know a family member or close friend with dementia, and worldwide, there is a new case of dementia every seven seconds.* In the light of these facts Rememori is a challenging game in more ways than one.

  7. Poem for 莫海伦 (Mo Hailun)

    Poem for 莫海伦 is computational visual poem contemplating transience of things and relationships.

    As a Firfeox add-on it adds a toolbar to the browser. Poem for 莫海伦 can be triggered on any web page. If so the page will slowly, element by element fade to white until whole page is completely white. (Process might take up to 2 or 3 minutes per page.)

  8. Le Rabot poète

    Le rabot-poète appartient à la série des « petits poèmes à lecture inconfortable ». Le lecteur doit en permanence déplacer la souris d’avant en arrière s’il veut  « raboter » l’aplat qui se reforme continuellement et ainsi accéder à la lecture de l’animation qui se déroule sous ce dernier. Qui, du texte ou du lecteur, contrôle l’autre ? Le ridicule ou le jeu ne l’emportent-ils pas sur le littéraire ? Que lit-on quand le zapping et l’action sont ainsi forcés ? Mais finalement, raboter la couleur de l’eau pour revenir sur l’eau dans l’animation, n’est-ce pas tout simplement réaliser une figure de rhétorique dont le lecteur est l’instrument ? Alors : immersion dans le texte ou, au contraire, le texte s’immerge-t-il jusque dans le lecteur ?

    Poésie du dispositif, de la relation plus que de l’écrit ; un texte à voir et à lire qui n’est plus pensé ni comme un ensemble de mots, ni en termes d’image.

  9. To Find the White Cat in the Snow

    David Herrstrom's "To Find the White Cat in the Snow," takes the modernist practice of thematically or associatively linking sections of a poem, and carries it a step further with hypertext. Like Wallace Stevens in "Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird," Herrstrom provides no narrative links between the sections of his poem. Unlike Stevens, Herrstrom is not constrained by the technology of print to present the stanzas of his poem sequentially, in a manner best suited to narrative. His poem is not a narrative and it is not ordered as if it were. It's ordering is hypertextual: the reader controls the sequence in which the stanzas appear and disappear. "To Find the White Cat . . ." is about, among other things, the difficulty of apprehension and the interrelationship of the phenomenal and the conceptual.

  10. Virtual Reality Exhibit at the Singapore Museum

    A hypertext poem. The reader navigates through different stanzas by selecting icons.

    Author's note:

    The sheer profusion of a city like Singapore calls reality into question. Exhilarating mix of cultures, plants and animals, surreal insects and multi-colored carp, it plays on the nagging fear that this world is not quite our home. Such anxiety is pitched to the surface by the pressure of the ordinary loneliness of a stranger in a strange land .

    We can't escape the making of virtuality, any more than we can avoid being connected to the human city (genet) and at the same time individuated from it (ramet). Everything "suffering description," which is the world, the "possible to be believed," is real. And in this fecund city of lives within a strict order, we become acutely aware that the assertion "In the city of Singapore eyes saw" is not so simple.
