  1. Animalamina

    Created by babel and 391.org, Animalamina, a collaboratively constructed work of multimedia poetry for children, consists of 26 pages of flash-based poetry organized around the letters of the alphabet.  The key aim of this project is to introduce a younger audience (5 - 11) to a variety of styles of digital poetry, animation and interaction, through the familiar format of an animal A-Z.  As the project’s “background” page notes, this work is situated within a tradition alphabet primers that stretches back over 500 years.  This background is noteworthy precisely because of the tradition’s combination of pedagogy and play, instructing new generations in the mechanics of emerging techniques and technologies.  Specific innovations introduced in this recent ABC are animation, audio, interactive content, non-linearity and chance.

  3. Radio Salience

    "Radio Salience" is an image-text-sound instrument with certain game-like features.  The player (user? listener? reader?) watches an array of four image panels, showing component slices from various larger images.  When any two slices match, slot-machine style, a click will initiate a poetastic moment.  There is no score, so no way to win, lose, or escape.  Radio is all.

    Just another entry in the Babylon Lottery, this project explores indeterminacy, accident, and resonance, taking as its muse the breathless voice of the airwaves, or radio.   What did those Greeks know, anyway?

    Some may ask, are we yet reading?  Well, somebody had to, but in most cases they weren't human. No sirens were harmed, and no one is like to drown.  Also, this is once again not a game. Though what you will see is certainly playable, there is no real contest, no score, no leveling.  Let's play Twister, let's play Risk.

  4. Slow Games, Slow Poems: The Act of Deliberation in "Slow Year"

    “Video games are actions,” declared Alexander Galloway in a manifesto that stakes out the
    essential differences between videogames and other forms of expressive culture, such as
    literature, photography, and cinema. But what about videogames in which action looks like
    inaction? What about videogames in which action means sitting still? What about a videogame
    that purports to be less a game and more a meditation—a work of literature? In this paper
    I explore a prominent yet remarkably understudied example of a slow game—a game that
    questions what counts as “action” in videogames. This game is A Slow Year (2010), designed
    for the classic Atari 2600 console by Ian Bogost. Comprised of four separate movements
    matching the four seasons, A Slow Year challenges the dominant mode of action in videogames,
    encouraging what I call “acts of deliberation.” These acts of deliberation transform the core
    mechanic of games from “action” (as Galloway would put it) into “experience”—and not just
    any experience, but the kind of experience that Walter Benjamin identifies as Erfahrung, an

  5. Argot, Ogre, OK!

    All of the prior remixes of Nick Montfort's _Taroko Gorge_ rewrote the text, while leaving Nick's code unchanged or almost so. I thought that was a shame. I also thought it was an opportunity! Since they all essentially consisted of word-lists plugged into a schema, I was able to remix them together on two axes at the same time:

    * Combining the word-lists of any two poems;
    * Mutating the stanza schema.

    I also took the opportunity to randomize the color schemes of the pages. (But not the font choices or the background imagery that some of the poems indulged in. Optima for everybody, I'm afraid.)

    Nick's original poem generates a constant ABBA-C pattern, with some extra B's thrown in. This page essentially invents a new pattern (for example A-, or BC-BA, or CCC, or so on) for each block. The code for the pattern is on the left, and the generated output is on the right.

    To answer the obvious question: Yes, this page really does execute the code that's displayed in the left column, and it really does generate the text in the right column.

  6. Lord's Prayer, The

    "Lord's Prayer, The" (2007) takes the original English version of "The Lord's Prayer" (in this case, a variation of the King James Version) and, using the same words, creates an entirely new poem.

  7. Archetypal Africa

    In this work, Bigelow takes everyday objects (stapler, chair, spoon) and elevates them to archetypal status through several strategies:

    * short, looping background videos (with audio) of natural scenes, usually focused on animals or plants, intercut with brief images of the object being discussed.

    * A poetic description of the object, using metaphor, personification, and other figurative language to highlight their function or role.

    * A scheduled set of fake historical events involving the object, often absurd and hilarious, including the location and the date in which they happened.

    This level of attention to everyday objects is parallel to Gertrude Stein’s Tender Buttons, but with a different approach to its language choices. While Stein chooses language that belongs to the same semantic frame of the objects she describes, Bigelow breaks (or blends) the frames to take a twist towards the absurd. These objects become archetypal because they are presented as tools that shape their creators as much as the world around them, connecting them to nature and humanity at a global level.

  8. The Dead Tower

    Explore a dark, mountainous landscape dominated by a gigantic tower. 

    Set in a dark and abstract dream world that revolves around a crashed bus, the atmospheric literary game environment The Dead Tower can be freely explored at full-screen with the mouse and keyboard. Leonardo Flores says about the project: “This narrative poem is arranged on a darkly atmospheric virtual world designed to both creep you out and pull you in…“. Like the proverbial moth, the reader’s attention is drawn towards the brightest things around: white words float in the air, static or rotating. And the lines of mezangelle verse both heighten the dread by telling fragments of a ghostly narrative prefigured by the bus crash site the reader finds herself in and soften the tone with hints about the interface that nudge the fourth wall.   9. Speaking Clock

    A HyperCard stack that generates poetry (from an existing list of terms) based on the computer's internal time.  In addition to a static text around the edges of the clock (which can cycle with clicking), a dynamically-generated text appears in the center.

  10. Poëzie loont (Poetry pays off)

    Onder dat credo ontwikkelden dichter Arnoud van Adrichem en grafisch ontwerpers Cox & Grusenmeyer de mobiele browser 'Geld', waarmee hardwerkende belastingbetalers hun belastingcenten kunnen terugverdienen door gedichten te lezen. Hoe werkt het? Alle banken in Amsterdam zijn voorzien van duidelijk herkenbare stickers die kunnen worden gescand met een smartphone of tablet. De gedichten die dan zichtbaar worden leveren elk 0,11 euro op; een bedrag dat ongeveer overeenkomt met het belastinggeld dat iemand met een gemiddeld jaarkomen dagelijks kwijt is aan cultuur. 'Money is a kind of poetry', stelde Wallace Stevens ooit. Deze applicatie bewijst eens te meer zijn gelijk.
