  1. What They Speak When They Speak to Me

    Originally produced as an installation piece for large touchscreen monitors in 2007, this poem is now available as a free iOS App. The Speak app turns all the letters of the poems into a kind of letter cloud or constellation but with the letters hovering over their relative position. When you touch the screen and drag your fingertip across it, the poetic line is reconstituted from that point onwards, following the trail left by your finger’s movement, and fading back into the cloud when you lift your finger. This allows for readers to experience incomplete lines and incomplete words, depending on where you’ve touched in the sentence. Lewis engages this computational structure in his poem thematically, because it is about miscommunication across language, culture, and identity. The snippets of comprehension one gets when hearing speech in different languages are echoed in the poem’s structure.

    The default display for this series of “THOught-poEMS” is a looped linear sequence of stanzas displayed in randomized fonts hovering in random positions over randomized video clips, while a cluster of words flock towards the pointer’s location on the text. Jhave provides the reader with control over several variables: videos, font, position, and gives him the ability to toggle, play, or pause the presence of text, video, flocking words, and sound.     This delightful sequence of minimalist concrete poetry is an homage to Bembo’s Zoo and Anipoemas is the result of a creative collaboration in which the technical and the conceptual become truly interconnected. Its minimalist aesthetic includes technical aspects like producing it with animated GIFs— an early Web technology for animation— and keeping font sizes close to 12 points, and using the Courier New font, which is simpler and Web-friendlier than Bembo. These creative choices are designed to make readers pay attention to the text, as well as emphasizing the minimalist graphics in which just a few pixels can make a huge difference.   4. You Secure in Your Job?

    These four short video poems use language attributed to four persons (or shall I say personalities?): George Kayatta, Ed Leedskalnin, Marie Bashkirtseff, and @georgelazenby. All four of these people were interested in personal media: journal writing, science, and artworks for public consumption: painting, sculpture, poetry, Tweets, etc. Two of them are of uncertain origin: George Kayatta is a self-described Renaissance Man, who attributes many feats and accomplishments to himself, including a translation of the Bible into English in rhyming couplets, and the coining the term “spime.” It is unclear whether the author of the Twitter identity @georgelazenby is George Lazenby, an actor famous for playing the role of James Bond only once in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, whose career never quite reached its initial promise (see Lazenby Factor).   5. Empty Thoughts for Real Life

    This minimalist piece takes a purely visual approach to language in a manner consistent with her other works. The panels only contain speech balloons, which are divested language, people, and context to represent purely abstract utterances.

  6. Seen Death

    This poem takes on the coverage of the U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq after the September 11, 2001 attacks particularly how by 2007 it seemed to have been somehow de-emphasized in the media. Zellen composes this piece out of newspaper headlines, data visualizations, iconic images, journalistic photography, text, and news media sound clips to make readers aware of the deaths that result from war and occupation. Slightly interactive, the reader triggers and ends scheduled sequences that display some of these materials in visceral ways that make it difficult to ignore the suffering. This multimedia hypertext is divided into three main sequences— “Death,” “Seen,” and “Extended Harmoniously—” and in all of them we see layered, stacked objects that contain language that has been remixed to produce newly readable poetic texts.

  7. A Dialogue Between Two Eyeballs

    This kinetic poem is takes the ancient rhetorical and poetic device of the dialogue to investigate the virtual, conceptual, and perceptual spaces of programmable media. Inspired by theoretical writings by John Cayley and Jean-François Lyotard, this poem explores binaries between past and present, old and new, letter and word, simple and complex writing surfaces, and the right and left eye— each of which has a distinct voice and perspective on the topic.   8. Snowblind

    This collaborative poem was written for the CAVE at Brown University and is a relatively simple yet compelling argument for this kind of writing, initiated by Robert Coover in 2002. Other CAVE works reviewed in this blog have published video documentation of a performance, which is a far cry from the real deal, but considering it takes time and money to travel to Brown University to use their CAVE (and a prohibitive amount of money to build one), this will do. Soderman and Carter have gone a step further by providing access to the Cave Text Editor and the source files for readers to explore the work and run a preview of it.

  9. @everyword

    @everyword is a Twitter bot that tweeted every word in the English language, in alphabetical order, one at a time, every half hour. <@everyword started its task in late 2007 and completed it in 2014. Along the way, it picked up over 100,000 followers and inspired dozens of parodies and imitations. The project, initially inspired by John F. Simon's Every Icon, was an exercise in the potential synergies of social media and experimental writing techniques extending over time: What happens when single words, invested with their own lexical context, are juxtaposed with ever-changing, personalized Twitter feeds? How does social media as a channel shape and afford the presentation of writing?
