  1. Free Haiku!

    This “reactive” (a.k.a. responsive or interactive) poem does an admirable job of representing the haiku in digital media, much like “Basho’s Frogger” by Neil Hennessy. Built upon a looping image of a drawing of a tree changing through the seasons, while a stick figure walks across the screen representing its shifting mood through body language. As the reader moves the pointer on the screen, different words emerge, allowing for the discovery of different phrases, depending upon one’s mouse movements. Juxtaposition of images and a connection to nature along with the speaker’s “posture” towards the material are all represented in this brief poem. The question of the title remains: is this a “free haiku” because it is offered gratis or because it has somehow been liberated from convention? Both readings are plausible, given the politics and poetics of Dada.

    Von 15. Mai bis 15. Juli 2002 wurden über Postkarten und Mailings Menschen dazu aufgefordert, per SMS Körperteile, deren Beschreibungen und Verortungen einzusenden. Aus diesem Material entstanden die untenstehenden Body-Tracks: Geschichten, Beobachtungen, Assoziationen; Leibes- und Liebesuebungen für den kollektiven Körper.

  3. Die Schwimmmeisterin

    Praktikanten! Immer her mit Euch! ruft die Schwimmmeisterin (alias Autorin Susanne Berkenheger) und scheucht ihre Funkmaus übern Computertisch. Nervös etwa? Vor ihr leuchtet der Monitor, hinter ihr auf der Wand eine Projektion: Drauf schimmern Badeanzüge von Menschen, die im Whirlpool paddeln. Geübte Augen können das erkennen. Andere können sich's denken. Die Schwimmmeisterin wartet auf Praktikanten (alias das Publikum). Und da kommen Sie auch schon! Sie übernehmen die Funkmaus. Sie wollen mit der Schwimmmeisterin Spaß machen und klicken wie wild. Die Schwimmmeisterin muss schnell erzählen, was die Praktikanten klicken, und kommt ganz außer Atem. Die Praktikanten schlagen sich mit einem Virus im System rum, dem hai75. Die Schwimmmeisterin glaubt den Hacker unter den Praktikanten. Die Praktikanten spießen mit einer Harpune die Schwimmmeisterin auf. Uh! Schade! Das war's auch schon. Jedesmal hofft die Schwimmmeisterin, die Praktikanten würden sie einmal verschonen. Dann könnte sie ihre Geschichte mal zu Ende erzählen. Passiert aber nie. Oder doch? An diesem Abend vielleicht?

  6. Plural maps: lost in São Paulo

    Plural maps: lost in São Paulo é um projeto de net arte colaborativa que incorpora labirintos construídos em VRML e links que levam a pontos específicos da cidade. O objetivo deste projeto é se apropriar da WWW para a construção de uma cartografia da cidade de São Paulo. Essa cartografia será criada a partir de pontos previamente locados pela artista e por escolhas enviadas pelos participantes da WWW. Participação no Projeto Plural maps: lost in São Paulo. O projeto Plural maps: lost in São Paulo é uma estrutura aberta à participação de internautas e será constantemente alterada durante a Bienal. Qualquer pessoa poderá participar do projeto enviando seu mapa ou retrato da cidade (imagens, sons, textos, vídeos, webcams, etc).   8. Who is Flora?

    I partially uncovered Flora's story through a well-worn stack of postcards at a dusty Midwestern estate sale in the summer of 1999. She had spent many months during the 1940s traveling alone across the United States and had consistently sent postcards back home to her mother in Peoria, Illinois. When I happened across her hand-written cards at the dissolution of her own estate, I was taken with the stories her cards revealed. I felt as though Flora and I had similar worldviews, and I easily felt a connection to her themes of freedom, loneliness, youth, death, memory and love. "Who Is Flora" is a dialog between Flora's travels and my interpretations. The story itself is presented on-line through a series of interactive screens. In addition to Flora's screens, my own screens share my reflections and thoughts, which are laid out visually to the right of Flora's stories. Graphic design, sound, motion, and text help further the sense of time and place to draw the reader more fully into the experience. Since this story is also a website it is constantly growing and changing; pieces are added as others are changed and deleted as the story grows.

  10. Nostalgia

     Created specifically for the ELO Symposium, this piece is a textual response to net art and electronic literature, in the form of an essay/poem/opinion as animated gif. Words replace each other over time. The user is not allowed to interact in any way other than opening or closing the page. The piece exposes a personal nostalgia for linear things, exact categorization, and known objects as well as a simultaneous excitement and apprehension regarding the future or net art, virtual worlds, and abstract literature.
