  1. picking figs in the ˚̥̞̞̽̽ͯ garden while my world eats Itself

picking figs in the ˚̥̞̞̽̽ͯ garden while my world eats Itself is a curatorial poetry collaboration with a large number of algorithms, bots, generators, and code snippets. Using a shifting set of parameters to define possible poem shapes in a letter-as-atomic-particle ruleset, these programs dissect and reassemble language according to a set of meanings intrinsic to their existence.

  2. Kim Kardashian's Marriage

Sam Riviere's debut, 81 Austerities, began as a blog responding to the spending cuts, and went on in publication to win the 2012 Forward Prize for Best First Collection. A sequel of sorts, the 72 poems in Kim Kardashian's Marriage mark out equally sharpened lines of public and private engagement. Kim Kardashian's 2011 marriage lasted for 72 days, and was seen by some as illustrative of the performative spectacle of celebrity life. Whatever the truth of this (and Kardashian's own statements refute it), Riviere has used the furore as a point of ignition, deploying terms from Kardashian's make-up regimen to explore surfaces and self-consciousness, presentation and obfuscation. His approach eschews a dependence upon confessional modes of writing to explore what kind of meaning lies in impersonal methods of creation. For, as with 81 Austerities, the process of enquiry involves the composition method itself, this time in poems that have been produced by harvesting and manipulating the results of search engines to create a poetry of part-collage, part-improvisation.

  3. Her Story

Her Story is the award winning video game from Sam Barlow, creator of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and Aisle. A crime fiction game with non-linear storytelling, Her Story revolves around a police database full of live action video footage. It stars Viva Seifert, actress and one half of the band Joe Gideon and the Shark.

Her Story sits you in front of a mothballed desktop computer that’s logged into a police database of video footage. The footage covers seven interviews from 1994 in which a British woman is interviewed about her missing husband. Explore the database by typing search terms, watch the clips where she speaks those words and piece together her story.

  4. The Fall

"The Fall" is the story of John Smith, three-time winner of the MBPW (Most Boring Person in the World award), who is about to take a radical step into the next phase of his life. John Smith is not only himself in this narrative—through the use of archetypal images, symbols and plot, he becomes an everyman for our age.

This story synthesizes text, images, audio, and animation into a single sustained vision of the action. It engages readers with opportunities for fuller interactions (e.g. triggering visual events during the piece and, at the end, an interactive quiz). These interactions push against typical reader expectations and force a more pro-active engagement with the material.

  6. Drone Pilot

Drone Pilot is a work of voice/sound poetry about a person who becomes part of a huge impersonal war machine, connected to a network of power and violence, which ultimately erases the person's individuality. My work is focused on the entanglement of humans and machines. I'm interested in how a mind can be imprinted with digital logic, and how digital and human memory can extend each other. I perform my work with just my voice, without electronics, but electronics are always present, in the aesthetics of the performance and the electrical currents of the body.

  10. Hilda Bewildered

Thank you for your interest in this app. Ironically, this page gets more interest now that Hilda Bewildered is unavailable!

Hilda Bewildered was released 30 January 2015. Apple removes from sale apps which have not been regularly updated, regardless of whether they continue to work or not. In order to update Hilda we need the latest XCode, which requires a newer Mac. When we buy a new Mac, we’ll update XCode and resubmit Hilda Bewildered to the App Store. But we recently updated our PCs, so… we don’t actually need new Macs right now, apart from this one annoying thing.

See the Hilda Bewildered Book Trailer on YouTube.

Author notes are available from within the app. Various extra notes can be found published on this blog — click on a Hilda Bewildered tag or do a search for “Hilda Bewildered” to see them all in one place.
