  1. Web/Fiction/Design: A brief beta-test of this year’s winner of the ELO Awards, Caitlin Fisher’s These Waves of Girls

    A (literature) award usually comes with publicity as well as responsibility. As this year's ambassador of digital literature, the US-American Electronic Literature Organization chose a webfiction that does not meet the technological standards of current internet or CD-ROM productions. Neither the rather outdated technique of frames, nor Flash (a program for moving images), nor the embedding of sounds have been implemented in a way that is technologically useful (there's nor debating aesthetics) or ar least more or less correct. About 15 years after the "invention" of digital literature (this date, too, is open for discussion), the technology available has become so sophisticated that a single author obviously can no longer live up to the demands as a lonely creative genius. The quality even of praised digital literature seems to indicate that, caused by the raising of technical standards, the future lies in what collaborative writing in hypertext or online "Mitschreibeprojekte" did not mange to establish: the dismissal of authorship in the traditional sense of authoritiy over the text in favor of a plural, diverse team-work.

  2. Wreader's Digest - How To Appreciate Hyperfiction

    Compared to its age - or youth - hyperfiction is a rather well-theorized genre. Hyperfiction-criticism either praises its subject as evolved print-text and better realization of contemporary literary theory - or deplore its - allegedly - low literary quality. What is missing, however, are in-depth readings of digital fiction that deemphasize theory and try to appreciate this new genre for what it has to offer.

    In this "paper", I will read two hyperfictions that are not among the two or three canonized texts that are relatively well-known and often-quoted. Both John McDaid's Uncle Buddy's Phantom Funhouse and Sarah Smith's King of Space deal with central issues of hypertext-theory - in content as well as formally. They are about agency and sense-making, ironically deconstructing mainstream theory's claims that digital, hyperlinked texts activate readers into a de-facto author-position. They are also representations of contemporary life that may be difficult to read at first but also make strangely adequate and enjoyable texts for today's readers. (Source: abstract in journal)

  3. Networked Improv Narrative (Netprov) and the Story of Grace Wit & Charm: Rob Wittig's Thesis Defense

    This is a recording of the 20 minutes or so of Rob Wittig's thesis presentation and oral exam for the MA at the University of Bergen, which was done on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 via Skype. Wittig's thesis outlines the genesis of a new network based genre at the interstices of game, improvisational theatre, literature, mass media and digital media. It was also the first MA thesis in the UiB Digital Culture program to include a fully developed creative project in electronic literature as well as an excellent theoretical thesis in print.

    Montfort introduced a new critical term, stanzory, which refers to "a unit of lines in a poem that is also a narrative with some sort of point."

    Presented at the 2012 MLA Convention as part of the "730. New Media Narratives and Old Prose Fiction" panel, arranged by the Division on Prose Fiction. Other panelists included Dene Grigar and Joseph Tabbi. The moderator, filling in for Amy Elias, was Heather M. Houser.

  8. How We Think: Digital Media and Contemporary Technogenesis

    How do we think? N. Katherine Hayles poses this question at the beginning of this bracing exploration of the idea that we think through, with, and alongside media. As the age of print passes and new technologies appear every day, this proposition has become far more complicated, particularly for the traditionally print-based disciplines in the humanities and qualitative social sciences. With a rift growing between digital scholarship and its print-based counterpart, Hayles argues for contemporary technogenesis-the belief that humans and technics are coevolving-and advocates for what she calls comparative media studies, a new approach to locating digital work within print traditions and vice versa. mines the evolution of the field from the traditional humanities and how the digital humanities are changing academic scholarship, research, teaching, and publication. She goes on to depict the neurological consequences of working in digital media, where skimming and scanning, or "hyper reading," and analysis through machine algorithms are forms of reading as valid as close reading once was.

  9. Creating Screen-Based Multiple State Environments: Investigating Systems of Confutation

    The intentions of this practice-led thesis are to investigate the interplay between Internet based digital narrative, image and interaction, and ultimately develop new practice, which primarily within the experiencing of the artwork articulates a new contribution to the field of study. The dual literature and contemporary practice reviews highlighted this as desired output. The predominant research in the field is not focused on the production of new projects but uses various forms of literary and critical theory to search out new interpretations and structural understanding of the artefacts in question. Similarly the reviews revealed a strong set of visual hegemonies - namely the ascent of neo-minimalism and a preoccupation with the replication of reality. My practice sits between these poles as being a hybrid of detailed line art, handcrafting and popular imagery, and as such, functions with uniqueness. The interstitial paradigm is used to support the practice, as parallels are drawn not only in the aesthetics of the work but also the politic of the communication.

  10. image + narrative

    Installed as a double issue of starting in the winter of 96/97, contributors sought to explore through literature a transition already evident in the culture at large, where technology had enabled narratives of all types to undergo transformation by the image.

    The first editors of the thread were Steve Tomasula and Anne Burdick.
