Pour analyser la poésie sur ordinateur et la poésie sur le Web (bien que ce dernier n’étant qu’un dérivatif du premier, puisque le coeur, le fond, l’essentiel même du Web réside dans l’ordinateur) nous avons à déblayer le terrain de la route qui nous y a conduit. Il est évident que cette poésie n’a pas surgi du néant. L’approche peut se faire selon trois axes: le premier étant la poésie d’aspect classique mais combinatoire, le deuxième la poésie visuelle et le troisième la poésie

Entrevista a Rui Torres
Rui Torres is Associate Professor at University Fernando Pessoa (UFP) in Porto and also author of several works of digital poetry. In this interview he explains how he started working in this field and where his inspiration comes from. Furthermore he explains why he sees the works of electronic literature as literary experiments and his concept of aesthetics taking in account his privilege for multimedia and the active participation of the readers in the creation of some his works. In the end he makes some considerations about preservation and archiving of works of electronic literature.

'Roda Lume' by E. M. de Melo e Castro
Roda Lume is a 2’ 43’’ videopoem, which was broadcast by the Rádio Televisão Portuguesa (RTP) in 1969 and subsequently destroyed by the station itself, and was reenacted by Melo e Castro from the original storyboard in 1986. The work is indeed surprising, as a poem that overlaps text, kinetic text, image, moving image and sound, anticipating and influencing various genres of digital hypermedia poetry mainly launched after the birth of the World Wide Web. It constructs a different notion of space-time, opening a “visual time” (Melo e Castro 1993: 238) of unfolding images and text that comprises a new reading perception.

'Computer Poetry' by Silvestre Pestana
In the 1980s, the world saw the introduction of personal computers (PCs). While the first creative stage of electronic literature took advantage of mainframe computers, only accessible in institutional environments, the context in which Silvestre Pestana created his first computer poems was totally different – a new wave Pedro Barbosa sarcastically calls “poesia doméstica” [domestic poetry] (1996: 147). With personal computers, Silvestre Pestana programmed in BASIC, first for a Sinclair ZX81, and then, already with chromatic lighting, for a Sinclair ZX Spectrum, three poems respectively dedicated to Henri Chopin, E. M. de Melo e Castro and Julian Beck, which resulted in the Computer Poetry (1981-83) series. Pestana, a visual artist, writer and performer – who had returned from the exile in Sweden after Portugal’s Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974 – brought diverse influences put forward with photography, video, performance, and computer media.

Digital Letterisms
According to Vilem Flusser, writing in the sense of placing letters or other marks one after another has little or no future (Flusser, 3). On the contrary, American conceptualists state that textual universe of the web is a victory of the verbal, liberating it, as earlier photography did for painting, from the task of representation and thus allowing it to obtain the artistic function (Goldsmith, 14). Indeed, in the world of digital communication, writing potentially acquires visual, audial, plastic, kinetic and computational features blurring the border between traditional writing and art practices. The work of many artists illustrates a trasition from concrete poetry to digital animation: John Maeda, Ottar Omstad, Jorg Piringer, Caroline Bergvall, Alexander Gornon, and many others. However, the reverse is also possible: transition from digital to postdigital – painted ASCII art (Ivan Khimin). So the letters are not only not dead, but the opportunities they acquire in the digital realm tie back to the central aspects of art history.

O Experimentalismo como Invenção, Transgressão e Metamorfose: A PO.EX Revisitada Através de Po-ex.net
O experimentalismo português iniciou-se na década de 1960, com um propósito comum de conferir ao acto poético valores artísticos, políticos e sociológicos assentes numa ruptura de vanguarda. O presente ensaio situa a intervenção experimental como invenção, transgressão e metamorfose, visto que perpassa as obras dos autores de "Poesia Experimental" e, mais tarde, de um novo conjunto de autores que exploraram a poesia visual, sonora, digital e a performance. Através do arquivo Po-ex.net, que documenta e dissemina o seu estudo, traçam-se dois itinerários, revisitando algumas das obras com carácter interventivo e transformativo, desde os anos 1960 até à actualidade.
