  1. Preservation of Digital Literature: From Stored to Reinvented Memory

    Regarding preservation, the digital age is the most fragile and complex context in the history of humanity. the added-value of digital technology is thus not where one expects. The digital medium is not a natural preservation medium, but digital technology makes us enter another universe which is a universe of reinvented and not stored memory. From this point of view, digital literature can be regarded as a good laboratory to address digital preservation: it makes it
    possible to raise the good questions and presents the digital age as a move from a model of stored memory to a model of reinvented memory.

  2. Barroquismos Digitais

    Existe um barroquismo nas criações poética digitais contemporâneas. Seria este um barroquismo de arte e engenho no modo de as obras operarem e no modo de se relacionar com o mundo digital daquele que cria e daquele que o usufrui. Barroquismo na maneira de se dar ao mundo da obra digital, na similaridade com o modo de ser das obras barrocas, considerando três características: materialidade da obra enquanto doadora de sentido, multimidialidade da obra e a interatividade entre obra e fruidor. Este artigo se propõe a apontar para esse barroquismo e certo continuum barroco na literatura digital.

  3. Electronic Publishing Models for Experimental Literature

    The impact of hypertext and hypermedia on scholarly editing of our literary legacy, which is increasingly published in electronic formats, has fostered a conceptual shift from the archive as a classified hierarchical collection of texts to the archive as a decentred and reconfigurable network of texts. Another important set of questions concerns new methods for editing and organizing multimodal textualities resulting from combinations of materials and media (graphic, audio, video, digital). The convergent multimodality of digital textuality opens up a new editing and archival space for multimedia and intermedia forms of writing. In the current technological context, innovative and experimental literary forms become relevant, as many of the operations that the machine provides can be found in previous literary practices: from collages and automatic writing to narrative permutations and intermedia poetry. This issue of the journal is specifically concerned with the problems of representing, archiving, and publishing experimental literary forms in digital spaces.

  5. Elogio del texto digital. Claves para interpretar el cambio de paradigma

    Las mismas personas que, en el pasado sentimos un cierto rechazo hacia la idea de leer en una
    pantalla y alejarnos del romanticismo del libro, hemos terminado sucumbiendo en la tentación
    de comprarnos un libro electrónico. En la actualidad, estamos presenciando un momento decisivo
    en que la memoria documental de la humanidad está siendo transferida del papel a un
    nuevo formato constituido por las nuevas tecnologías de la información y la comunicación: el
    formato digital. Como lo defne Javier Celaya en el prólogo, Elogio del texto digital (2012) de
    José Manuel Lucía Megías, pretende ser un “quitamiedos” para todos aquellos que ven el texto
    en formato digital como una amenaza contra el libro impreso.
    Megías refexiona acerca del famoso debate, recurrente en conferencias y mesas redondas,
    sobre si el libro electrónico sustituirá por completo al impreso y si habrá consecuencias catas -

  6. Playing with Chance: On Random Generation in Playable Media and Electronic Literature

    Randomly generated content poses problems for theories of digital art: such content is resistant to structural theories, which can only provide templates, and one cannot assume a shared text for close analysis. Instead of reaching fixed endings, such works also tend to be of indefinite length or at least suggest indefinite possible combinations. I argue that the impact of such works can instead be found in how one attempts to work through their underlying grammar, based on limits in the algorithms that generate the content — not those limits themselves, but how their outlines come to be known. Repetitively iterating through these works simultaneously upholds the chance nature of the epiphenomenal occurrences while also illustrating the sameness of the underlying algorithm over time, creating a future-oriented interpretive arc. I examine two works that play off of this technique in different ways: Nick Montfort’s Taroko Gorge, a poetry generator which uses random generation to distill the essence of its object’s possibility, and the action role-playing game Torchlight, which attempts to elevate chance beyond a mere gameplay mechanic and toward an ethic.

    "Theoretical Permutations for Reading Cybertexts" is a review essay on Markku Eskelinen, Cybertext Poetics: The Critical Landscape of New Media Literary Theory (London: Continuum, 2012), and C.T. Funkhouser, New Directions in Digital Poetry (London: Continuum, 2012). Both books engage new media works and practices in ways that are transformative of the conceptual apparatus and tools of literary theory and literary analysis. Moving between the deep analysis of the Funkhouser’s and the high-level abstraction of Eskelinen’s will give readers an exhilarating sense of just how new media is changing our aesthetical experience and our way of thinking and writing about the textual experience.

    In this essay, Davin Heckman argues that works of electronic literature often provide occasions for cultivating attention in a mutable cultural landscape. Through readings of John Cayley, YHCHI, Rob Wittig, and Richard Holeton, Heckman points to a poetics of technical estrangement by which new media is opened up to deliberative reading, and thus presents contemporary readers with the opportunity to develop critical practices appropriate for the conditions of neoliberalism.

    Reviewer Tim Keane suggests that Pete Townshend’s memoir Who I Am captures the tension animating The Who’s career, the duality of autobiographical blues and (art-school inspired) auto-destruction. But, Keane suggests, the book also articulates the written autobiography’s inevitable (if sometimes interesting) failure to achieve the "ex-static" atemporality of music. "I Can’t Explain" ends up telling us more about Townshend’s soul than Who I Am.
