Hvordan kan man arbeide analytisk med tekster som består av både skrift, bilder og grafikk - og iblant også av lyd, video og animasjon? Dette er et spørsmål som stilles med økende kraft og hyppighet i klasserom, i lærerutdanning og på forskerseminarer. Sammensatte - eller multimodale - tekster er på kunnskapssamfunnets dagsorden. Det har blitt påtrengende viktig å finne ut hvordan slike tekster faktisk virker. I denne boka tilbys svar fra ledende forskere på feltet. I elleve kapitler gjennomgås en rekke ulike tekstsjangre; fra turistbrosjyrer og kart via nettspill og digitale reiseguider til spillefilmer og visualisert skjønnlitteratur. Ulike teksttyper krever ulike tilnærminger og ulike analytiske målsettinger. Men felles for alle bokas kapitler er fokuset på samspillet mellom de ulike meningsressursene som tekstene er sammensatt av. Boka henvender seg primært til forskere og studenter som arbeider analytisk med sammensatte tekster. As a part of what the author discusses as the condition of polyaesthetics in contemporary arts, TOC and similar works challenge readers to engage in multiple modes of reading practices. The works are characterized by tensions and creative production across media forms, conventions, and cultural contexts of digital and printed works.

Digital Literature and the Modernist Problem
What is the status of digital literature in contemporary culture? After more than 20 years of production, the audience for digital literature remains small in comparison with the audience for "serious" or popular fiction. Many scholars and practitioners assume that digital literature constitutes a contemporary avant-garde, which does its work of experimentation outside or in opposition to the mainstream. Recent comparisons of digital poetics and early modernist art practices (e.g. by Scott Rettberg and Jessica Pressman) indicate continued interest in this issue. The notion of the avant-garde might seem thoroughly out of date in a consideration of the digital future. Important theorists (e.g. Huyssen, Drucker) have argued that the avant-garde is no longer viable even for traditional media and art practices. On the other hand, the avant-gardes of twentieth-century modernism made claims about the function of art that remain surprisingly influential today, within the art community and within popular culture.
