The Egg The Cart The Horse The Chicken
The egg, the cart, the horse, the chicken was written by Hazel Smith (text) and Roger Dean (sound). The hypertext and animations, written in Flash by Hazel Smith, are designed for a split screen. The texts in both the upper and lower frame are grouped into short linear 'scenes' which form an overall 'movie'. But the sequence in the upper frame can be disrupted by clicking on hyperlinks (marked in capital letters), which allow the reader to jump to texts other than the ones which follow each other in sequence. Consequently the juxtaposition of the texts on the two different screens is also variable. The piece engages with the way in which linear systems are constantly disrupted by non-linearity. This is written into the piece at a formal level by the use of the hyperlinks, animation and split screen, which tend to disrupt normal reading processes. Thematically the piece also addresses the ways in which a simple cause and effect relationship rarely operates, even within scientific systems.

Jetzt? Oder der höchste Augenblick
This entry has a philosophical impact: "He developed a theory from the observation that when one is young, one thinks mainly of the future, but when one is old one thinks of the past; Namely that there has to be a moment in a persons life when one is completely in the moment and with oneself. Now one is waiting for that moment, and one is afraid it will pass by". So begins a hypertext ("observation", "future", "past", "theory" etc. are links) that then continues in a life-philosophical way. "It is a strongly networked labyrinth with one enterance and without an exit" says Nils Ehlert himself, "the texts on the pages are about the thoughts and experiences of a main character, and are connected to each other by links associatively rather than causally. Pictures (mostly photos) and small animations illustrate and comment the contents of the texts".

Science For Idiots
Science For Idiots is an older Flash piece resurrected using HTML5, CSS, and Javascript and now playable on multiple devices and browsers. Its resurrection is the first “education” offered to the viewer: a visit to the online source page is an instruction, via its example, of how a Flash work can be converted into a contemporary piece of electronic literature for the web.
The second “education” is within the piece itself. Science For Idiots takes us through some basic scientific concepts (evolution, global warming, elementary particles, and so on) and explains them in graphic form. The piece concludes with an interactive “Science For Idiots” quiz.
