2. The Portopia Serial Murder Case

   Portopia Renzoku Satsujin Jiken (ポートピア連続殺人事件?, literally The Portopia Serial Murder Incident), is an adventure game designed by Yuji Horii and published by Enix (now Square Enix). It was first released on the NEC PC-6001 in June 1983, and later ported to other personal computers. Chunsoft ported the game to the Nintendo Famicom, known outside Japan as the Nintendo Entertainment System, or NES, on November 29, 1985, and to different mobile phone services starting in 2001. It is the first part of the Yuuji Horii Mysteries trilogy, along with its successors Hokkaido chain murder: disappearance of Ohotsuku (Hokkaidou Rensa Satsujin: Ohotsuku ni Kiyu, 1984) and The Karuizawa Kidnapping Guide (Karuizawa Yuukai Annai, 1985). There are several fan translations to English but no official translation.

3. Alexandrins au Greffoir

   Alexandre au Greffoir fait référence à une méthode de transformation de texte. Elle a été publiée dans la Bibliothèque Oulipienne en 1986. Ces alexandrins sélectionnés proviennent des alexandrins les plus connus de la poésie française. Marcel Bénabou et Jacques Roubaud ont collaborés afin de retenir les alexandrins les plus connus de la poésie française en faisant marcher leur mémoire. Par conséquent, ils n’ont pas été puiser dans des anthologies ou des dictionnaires afin de sélectionner les meilleurs vers. Une fois la liste établie, ils ont eu recours à la greffe d’hémistiche. Les alexandrins sont coupés à la césure, puis reconstitués comme l’utilisateur le souhaite avec d’autres hémistiches, tel un moule. La méthode de l’ALAMO offre donc une fonction configuratrice au lecteur. Cette greffe obéit à plusieurs contraintes sémantique, syntaxique, prosodique pour respecter jusqu’au nombre de pieds d’un alexandrins (prenant donc en compte les phénomènes d’élision). Alexandre au Greffoir de l’OULIPO est un programme applicationnel qui sélectionne également les hémistiches dans l’inventaire de Bénabou et de Roubaud.

4. Locutions Introuvables

   “Locutions introuvables” is a literary program inspired by Marcel Bénabou’s Ouilipien method published in The Oulipien Library N.25 in 1984. This program was presented in the “Les Immatériaux” exposition of the Centre Pompidou in 1985, but it was Éric Joncquel who ported it to the website ALAMO (l’Atelier de Littérature Assistée par la Mathématique et les Ordinateurs). The program is also inspired by the notion of “langage cuit” (over-done language) by Robert Desnos. Entitled “Quinze locutions introuvables, mais qui doivent enrichir notre sagesse” (15 lost expressions, but that ought to enrich our wisdom), this program takes one hundred and forty expressions and cuts them up into two parts and recombines them in order to form original expressions. Thus, the “head” and the “tail” of the expressions are mixed up to create lexical chimera. The program works by composing expressions randomly. That is to say, the creation of these “lost expressions” is a function of the combination of different elements that provides the reader with the opportunity of interpreting the text, or rather the scripton, in a personal manner.

5. Rimbaudelaires

   Rimbaudelaires est un programme applicationnel crée par ALAMO (Atelier de Littérature Assistée par la Mathématique et les Ordinateurs) qui a été présenté pour la première fois en 1985 pendant l’exposition Les Immatérieux au Centre Georges Pompidou (un musée qui met en valeur les nouvelles technologies) à Paris. De plus, il a été présenté pendant l'exposition Arts et Maths à la Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie de La Villette. Ce programme applicationnel utilise une fonction aléatoire avec des contraintes prosodiques, syntaxiques, et sémantiques.

   Ce programme prend la forme du sonnet très connu, « Le dormeur du val, » par Arthur Rimbaud. En gardant le même style et la même syntaxe, ce programme applicationnel remplace les mots traditionnels de Rimbaud qui constituent le poème avec le lexique de Charles Baudelaire. En arrivant sur site Web, on clique sur la phrase « Un de ses sonnets » et on voit immédiatement une nouvelle création. Cette création est un poème unique qui mélange des éléments de deux poètes célébrés du 19ème siècle. Par exemple :

6. Triolets

   Les Triolets est un programme combinatoire alamien publié en 1985 par Paul Braffort qui est basé sur le triolet ; un poème avec une forme fixe depuis le Moyen Age en deux strophes avec le rime a b a a a b a b. La forme fixe se trouve dans la répétition des vers 1 et 2 aux vers 4, 7, et 8 respectivement. L’Alamo utilise la substitution des vers de 6 triolets « compatibles » originaux par Braffort qui sont combinés aléatoirement avec une contrainte stylistique pour créer 7. 776 triolets différents. La fonction de ce programme est exponentiel avec les 6 triolets originaux (6^5) et les tirages possibles selon la contrainte stylistique. Cette caractéristique rend ce programme alamien similaire à Cent Mille Milliard de Poemes par Raymond Queneau, mais avec moins de poèmes à cause de la structure à suivre.

7. Dizains

   Les Dizains is a combinatory program/ text generator created by Marcel Bénabou. The work was presented at the Pompidou Center in 1985. The online version for the ALAMO website was made by Eric Joncquel. The program generates “dizains” (poems consisting of ten lines) in an exponential method. The “texton” (the original text the program uses to generate new poems) is one ten-line poem with five pairs of rhymes. The program allows the reader to access different permutations of these ten original lines. The generator uses a randomization function with stylistic constraints related to the rhyme structure. The constraints make it so that any two lines that rhyme can only be separated by 0, 1 or 2 other lines. These constraints yield a large but not unmanageable number of “scriptons” (possible new poems) (145,920). For example, it would not be impossible to read all of these poems over the course of several years. In this program, the role of the reader is to interpret the different permutations produced by the randomization function of the generator.

8. Universo

   The poem-program Universo was developed by João Coelho in BASIC for a IBM PC. This is a computer poem which draws its own title - universe, in english - in a spiral that evokes endless movement, symmetry and chance - forming words in portuguese along the way.
