4. Les Mots et les Images

   Les Mots et les Images is a work by J.-M Dutey published in alire 5 in 1991. At first, one encounters a table that is divided in 21 smaller boxes. Here, there is a spatial idea that is introduced which Dutey wished to explore as seen in a quote from the work itself, “(Dutey) voudrait que sa poésie explore les espaces qu’elle occupe et ceux qu’elle suggère.” This quote expresses an exploratory desire because one has to click on the words on the screen to begin the program. If one chooses not to click, then nothing will happen. It is up to the user to explore the work, whether that is limited or full exploration. This seems to give the user a sense of control, yet when one chooses to begin; the control is replaced by a feeling of being lost in the connections between the words in the smaller boxes.

   American Psycho is a novel by Bret Easton Ellis, published in 1991. The story is told in the first person by Patrick Bateman, a serial killer and businessman. Bateman moves among the young and trendy in 1980s Manhattan. Young, handsome, and well educated, he earns his fortune on Wall Street by day while spending his nights in ways we cannot begin to fathom. Expressing his true self through torture and murder, Bateman prefigures an apocalyptic horror that no society could bear to confront.

   The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is an action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It is the third game in The Legend of Zelda series and was released in 1991 in Japan and 1992 in North America and Europe.

   A Link to the Past focuses on Link as he journeys to save Hyrule, defeat the dark lord Ganon, and rescue the descendants of the Seven Sages. It returns to a top-down perspective similar to the original The Legend of Zelda, dropping the side-scrolling gameplay of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. It introduced series staples such as parallel worlds and items including the Master Sword.
