2. Polyaesthetics: Designing and Experiencing Digital Narratives

   The talk discusses a series of characteristics of contemporary literature: multimodality, co-creativity, location-awareness, and tactility. Looking at digital narratives, particularly from the ELMCIP Anthology of European Electronic Literature I explore these four dimensions of what I call the polyaesthetic nature of contemporary culture. In addition, I present a locative media narrative that I am creating with Jay David Bolter and Michael Joyce, using the AR browser Argon.

3. Notes on the Voyage: From Mainframe Experimentalism to Electronic Literature

   Visiting Artist Talk presented by CE3C Lab at Alberta College of Art and Design, 7 February 2013.

   JR Carpenter has been using the internet as a medium for the creation and dissemination of experimental texts since 1993. In this lecture she will explore much earlier works of Electronic Literature dating back to the 1950s, setting a critical and historical context for the vibrant and experimental field that we find today. She skilfully excavates layers of computer/ communication/network history to offer insight into contemporary practices. Through commentary, analysis, historical images, and examples new and old of computer-generated texts and other non-traditional forms of writing, speaking, and interacting, this talk takes a practice-led approach to navigating the ever shifting creative, critical, and political terrain of this fast-growing form of digital-expression.

   Since the rise of the mainframe computer, literary authors and critics alike have expressed anxiety about the computer’s ability to write narrative prose and poetry as well humans, or better. This lecture situates the contemporary digital literary practices of reading, writing, rewriting, and performing computer-generated texts within a broader social and historical context, dating to long before the advent of the computer. Christopher Strachey's 1952 Love Letter generator and Theo Lutz's The Castle generator are discussed in depth.

7. The ZX Spectrum Demoscene as Organized Anarchy

   Piotr Marecki, Ph.D., from Jagiellonian University and the UBU Lab in Kraków, Poland, will speak on the popular 8-bit computer released in 1982 in the UK, the ZX Spectrum. The title of his talk,  “The ZX Spectrum Demoscene as Organized Anarchy,” argues that the ZX Spectrum platform is unique as compared to other 8-bit machines and can be seen as organized anarchy. The event is scheduled on Friday, September 1, from 12-1 p.m. in VMMC 211A on the campus of WSUV.

8. ZX Spectrum scene poetry

   For the month of August, the Media Archaeology Lab has been honored indeed to host Professor Piotr Marecki (from the the Institute of Culture at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and lecturer at the Film School in Łódź, Poland) and Yerzmyey, a lo-fi artist, demoscener, musician, graphic artist, photographer, and writer also from Krakow, Poland.

   To celebrate their visit, they will present a 90-minute demoshow of their work in the MAL on original ZX Spectrum Machines as well as local clones such as Timex, Speccy 2010, Zx-Uno, and the ZX Vega console.

   Guest lecturer by Greg Niemeyer at the University of Bergen, May 02, 2018. As the University of Bergen develops a new strategy to become a leader in innovative approaches to digital media and culture, the Berkeley Center for New Media provides a compelling model of cross-campus engagement.

   The University of Bergen program in Digital Culture, the departments of Media, Art, Design, and Media City Bergen are pleased to welcome Greg Niemeyer, the co-founder of the Berkeley Center for New Media, to UiB. Professor Niemeyer will give a presentation on BCNM's innovative interdisciplinary approach to critical and artistic engagement with new media.
