  2. Rezension: Digitale Medien in der Erlebnisgesellschaft. Kunst, Kultur, Utopien

    The increasing presence of digital media forms our new understanding of community and calls for a closer examination of the culture of networks we are participating in. A central point of interest concerning our culture becomes the convergance of Arts, Entertainment, and Digital Interactive Media Technologies. These change the way we perceive arts, daily news or have an impact on how we communicate with each other. In his new book, Roberto Simanowski refers to Gerhard Schulze's socio-logical theory of the Event Society (Erlebnisgesellschaft, 1992), observing that nowadays social events ostensibly take place on the Internet. Along with discussions on the politics of the World Wide Web and its participatory values, Simanowski focuses on the significance of digital media in artistic practices. He considers interactive art as a key to the understanding of the event society. Choosing a hermeneutic approach to analyse "processing signs" in arts, Simanowski defends participatory art against Adorno's notion of distraction. The author prooves, in a number of case studies, that interactive art calls for both immersion and cognitive reflection.

  4. Grasping at Loose Bindings: Thoughts on Language, Literature, Communication in a Time of Change

    Davin Heckman is a Fulbright Scholar with Digital Culture this year, and will hold a lecture on his current research on Thursday, April 12, 2012.

    Heckman will discuss literature in a time of media change.  Part of an ongoing research project, this talk will explore the objective tendency of neoliberalism and the digital revolution, and the humanistic potential of emerging literary and critical practices.

  6. Literature: Lift this End

    The Internet epistemologist Richard Rodgers describes the latest evolution of digital culture as “the end of the virtual,” a moment at which attention can no longer be confined primarily to integration, encapsulation, or remediation, but must turn instead to natively computational questions and methods. The meaning of this periodic shift is clear enough for the social and information sciences, but less so for the humanities: especially for literature, a field recently split into core and periphery, a home ground of literature-proper set against a hazier outline or outland that has come to be called “the literary.”

    This talk begins by subverting the all-too-familiar topos of end-times or elegiac criticism (the end
    of some world as we know it), by insisting that end may as easily refer to contour or wrapping as
    termination or extinction. That is, an end may also be an edge, a line along which a structure becomes ready-to-hand, or available for manipulation. An end in this sense is an affordance for engagement: commonly, for lifting and carrying.

  7. The Challenge of Cybertext: Teaching Literature in the Digital World

    This article discusses the changing role of literature in the contemporary media landscape. Literary scholarship may well maintain its importance in the digitalizing world, but this requires it to engage in an open dialogue with cultural and media studies. It is important that more attention is paid to contemporary literature as well as to new media offering significant pedagogical possibilities, which should be better acknowledged. The article's main focus is on the emerging field of digital literature. Cybertextuality, especially, is fundamentally changing our notions of the integrity of a literary work, reading, writing and interpretation. I attempt to describe and put into context one sample case of cybertextuality, The Impermanence Agent by Noah Wardrip-Fruin et al. Finally, I discuss some of the practical problems faced by teachers who introduce digital literature in their classrooms.

  9. Think different: Estilos de vida digitais e a cibercultura como expressão cultural

    O conceito de cibercultura conquistou inquestionável direito de cidadania no campo
    das ciências humanas, no qual tem se constituído como horizonte de questões relevantes para
    disciplinas tão diferentes como a Antropologia, a Filosofia ou a teoria literária. Contudo, sua
    amplitude e indefinição crônicas a aproximam da Comunicação como um saber nebuloso,
    transdisciplinar e em constante reavaliação de suas fronteiras. O objetivo deste trabalho é propor uma definição operatória de cibercultura como formação discursiva ou cultural (cf. FOSTER, 2005; MATRIX, 2006), com estruturas epistemológicas coerentes e passíveis de abordagem a partir de uma perspectiva unificadora. O que se sugere, portanto, é pensar a cibercultura como campo de conhecimento capaz de englobar, sem disparidades, os diferentes objetos e questões que têm sido tradicionalmente classificados como “ciberculturais”. Para tanto, tomamos como estudo de caso o iPhone, da Apple, analisando algumas das representações culturais formuladas em torno do aparelho, objeto de desejo e símbolo de um estilo de “vida digital”.

  10. Field Notes From The Secret War Between Value and Meaning in Digital Culture

    The crisp air of technological promise is increasingly permeated by comments reinforcing the view that digital culture is understandable as a fringe phenomenon. Linguistic evidence — 'zines, "being wired," cybersurfing, Mondo Internet — is encountered in verbal manifestations of a view that considers digital culture as more than an activity; it is seen as a state of mind in full bloom. These and other signifiers evince a specialist language that signals the creative growth of digital culture; a growth originally led more by fierce allegiance to an intrinsic communitarian mission than more superficial possibilities of capital gain. The permanent citizens of digital culture are the pioneers, activists, and defenders of its realm; they make it, they take it, they shape it, because there is no other culture like it. Likewise, their own lives have been transformed by the premise and promise of non-geographical community. Community, digital culture knows, revolves around the fulcrum of distributed communication as an ethical principle, and any innovations inherent in the culture are offered as communicative devices to this end.
