1. Sooth

   Sooth is a set of love poems interactively triggered phrase-by-phrase to fly in flocks over original video. Sounds associated with each phrase are mapped to audio which pans and volume shifts in space as the phrase flies. Easing equations are randomly shuffled to create a sense of behavior to each phrase. Text-code-video-audio all original and released under a Creative Commons 2.5 License. It was created while I was artist-in-residence at La Chambre Blanche web-lab in Quebec city. Bilingual: French-English in same interface.

2. wotclock

   wotclock is a QuickTime "speaking clock." This clock was originally developed for the TechnoPoetry Festival curated by Stephanie Strickland at the Georgia Institute of Technology in April 2002. It is based on material from What We Will, a broadband interactive drama produced by Giles Perring, Douglas Cape, myself, and others from 2001 on. The underlying concepts and algorithms are derived from a series of "speaking clocks" that I made in HyperCard from 1995 on. It should be stressed that the clock showcases Douglas Cape's superb panoramic photography for What We Will.

3. Transient Self-Portrait

   Transient self–portrait is an artistic research project questioning notions of reading and the electronic medium while exploring the possibilities of coding to interact with the work. I take as the point of departure two pivotal sonnets in Spanish literature that are normally studied alongside each other, En tanto que de rosa y azucena by Garcilaso de La Vega, a 16th Century Spanish poet, using Italian Renaissance verse forms and Mientras por competir con tu cabello by Luís de Gongora, a 17th Century Spanish poet from the Baroque period. Gongora's sonnet is a homage to Garcilaso's and the styles and the cultural aspects that appear on the sonnets are very different reflecting the attitudes from the Renaissance and the Baroque. This project is a response to some of the concepts that emerge from these sonnets; ephemerality of life, consummation, transient entities, fragility, which are also relevant to our age and the electronic world we inhabit.

4. Machines of Disquiet

   Machines of Disquiet (iPad App) has been developed in the context of an ongoing research project at the University of Coimbra, Portugal, and its goal is to create a Digital Archive of the Book of Disquiet [Livro do Desassossego – LdoD], an unfinished work written by Fernando Pessoa between 1913 and 1935. Machines of Disquiet is the name chosen for a number of experimental applications for mobile devices (iOS and Android) that aim to provide reading and aesthetical experiences based on the text of the Book of Disquiet. Every application is an attempt to find a new setting for experiencing the LdoD as sensitive matter (i.e. matter experienced in different modalities – text, drawing, sound, image, motion) and explores the expressive potential of these types of devices, particularly in terms of interface (e.g. multi-touch interactions and motion sensors). 5. 18 Cadence

   18 Cadence is a storymaking machine where readers explore a house through a hundred years of history. Any piece of the story can be dragged and dropped onto a workspace area and repositioned, merged, and remixed, like magnetic fridge poetry for narrative. Readers can share and exchange the stories they make this way, and have created poetry, counter-narratives, collages, and many other stories and experiments. 18 Cadence was a Kirkus Reviews “Best Book App” of 2013, and received Honorable Mentions for the prestigious IGF Nuovo award and the Robert Coover Award for a Work of Electronic Literature.
