    Underbelly is a playable media fiction about a woman sculptor, carving on the site of a former colliery in the north of England, now landscaped into a country park. As she carves, she is disturbed by a medley of voices and the player/reader is plunged into an underworld of repressed fears and desires about the artist’s sexuality, potential maternity and worldly ambitions, mashed up with the disregarded histories of the 19th Century women who once worked underground mining coal.

  2. Je ziet hier iedereen voorbijkomen, de Westerparkse gedichten

    You See Everyone Go By is the result of a four year project in which Hans Kloos made a portrait of the Amsterdam district Westerpark by writing poems about particular places and people in the district. It was originally published as a CD-ROM that opened a full screen window with a map of Westerpark with the choice between gedichten (poems) and stemmen (voices). Clicking on one of these would open a new map of the district with dots appearing all over the map. The dots in their turn would lead to either the text or an animation of a poem or to a recording of the poem, read not by the author, but by someone with a direct connection to the poem. Je ziet hier iedereen voorbijkomen is not about the author, but about a place and its people.

    The work is in entirely in Dutch. Although on some occasions a poem has been translated into English, these translations are not included here.

  3. Archetypal Africa

    In this work, Bigelow takes everyday objects (stapler, chair, spoon) and elevates them to archetypal status through several strategies:

    * short, looping background videos (with audio) of natural scenes, usually focused on animals or plants, intercut with brief images of the object being discussed.

    * A poetic description of the object, using metaphor, personification, and other figurative language to highlight their function or role.

    * A scheduled set of fake historical events involving the object, often absurd and hilarious, including the location and the date in which they happened.

    This level of attention to everyday objects is parallel to Gertrude Stein’s Tender Buttons, but with a different approach to its language choices. While Stein chooses language that belongs to the same semantic frame of the objects she describes, Bigelow breaks (or blends) the frames to take a twist towards the absurd. These objects become archetypal because they are presented as tools that shape their creators as much as the world around them, connecting them to nature and humanity at a global level.

You can play with the letter-creatures and watch and listen how they interact with each other or use them to produce soundscapes like you would with an electronic musical instrument. abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz blends art, biology, fun and physics to create a unique, dynamic and interactive sound ecology.

    This app is the result of joerg piringer's ongoing research of vocal sounds and their relation to dynamic typography in the form of performance, video and software art.

  5. Snow Queen

    Snow Queen, a debut videopoem by Machine Libertine, is a combination of masculine poetry «Poison Tree» by William Blake contrasted to mechanic female MacOS voice and Sever group remix of Souzfilm animation «Snow Queen» (1957). The cubist imagery of the Snow Queen's realm evokes parallels with the realm of the digital that is as unstable as the icicles that Key composes the word "eternity" from.

  6. Videograph Fictions or Graphoems

    Based on television footage from Jason Nelson’s childhood in the 1980s, such as Frankenstein reruns, news coverage of President Reagan, ads for Pacman pasta, bubble gum, and dinoriders, this series of narratives and poems are structured on graphs that are as absurd as the footage itself. The graphs and their accompanying narrative and poetic texts chronicle the rise and fall of characters, a President, secret organizations, and the physical and mental health of gum chewers. Characteristically witty and incisive, Nelson’s writing thrives as a Postmodern critique of culture and politics. At the same time, there is a personal touch to his work, as we can reconstruct aspects of his childhood through the video clips, all evidence of the electronic and physical toys (and their power sources), film and food, and a link to politics and the Cold War— with the terrifying specter of nuclear war hovering over it all.   7. Birds Still Warm from Flying

    The energy of the looped music clip and the whimsically tactile image of its title set the tone for a poem (or 43 quintillion poems) composed of lines about human relationships, spaces in buildings, medical procedures, books, computers, and more. Jason Nelson frames this poem as a mature cube interface poem, and it is difficult to disagree, when juxtaposed with his earlier work in this vein “The Poetry Cube.” The cube interface is more polished in its physicality as a manipulable three dimensional object, with Rubik’s Cube dynamics that allow for up to 4.3×1019 possible permutations of its 42 lines and 12 videos. Each face is preset with a color for its numbered lines of verse and short looping video clips of some sort of movement (on foot, by bus, in a car) in an urban setting.   8. The O2 Tales

    This charmingly handcrafted hypertext work is built upon the narrative framework of The Canterbury Tales, but in a completely contemporary fashion, using the Simon Cowell’s popular tv musical talent show The X Factor as the motivation for a pilgrimage to the O2 concert arena in London. The inviting hand-drawn train (reminiscent of Max Dalton’s art used in Wes Anderson’s films) uses its characters as an interface to learn about their motivations and interconnected stories. The background music consists of amateur performances of popular songs, of a quality that might give Simon Cowell abundant opportunity for a snide remark, but in this case fits the tone and aesthetics of the piece. The poem in the Prologue echoes Chaucer in its structure, but is cut from the same cloth as the music— offering lines that win readers over with enthusiasm and charm, as it does when it rhymes “telly” with “melée.” (Source: Leonardo Flores, I ♥ E-Poetry)

  9. The Winter House

    This multimedia narrative shortlisted for the 2010 New Media Writing Prize combines a variety of genres and forms to tell an engaging story. This murder mystery brings the protagonist back to a mansion and boarding school to investigate her father’s untimely demise. The narrative and graphic design of this linear hypertext borrows heavily from the detective board game Clue (aka Cluedo), yet its treatment of the material using videogame interfaces, e-poetic deployment of its language, and smartly integrated multimedia keeps it from seeming cliché.   10. Descants

    On the occasion of the ELO 2010 conference celebrating Robert Coover, I have devised a 24-channel sound installation/performance.  Given the theme of the conference (Archive & Innovate), I chose to investigate the sonic literary archive, utilizing recordings of Robert Coover in the reading his own work as a framework for this composition.  Through a computational process of spectral analysis, editing, and re-synthesis, solo speech is transformed into a chorus of diffused instrumental timbres.  Time is stretched, allowing the ebb and flow of the original readings to be heard very slowly - creating an ambient, electro-acoustic arena.
