    Samuel Becket’s Waiting for Godot, re-mediated for Web. In this project different parts of the play are appropriated for cyberspace. to examine different themes including: hyperlinked narration in cyberspace, experience of reading mediated by information retrieval tools, collaboratively generated content and conformism, our desires and anxieties in cyberspace and the temporal experience across different media.   2. Automatype

    Howe’s new piece, “Automatype,” which can be seen as either ambient text art, a weird game of solitaire for the computer, or an absorbing ongoing puzzle for a human viewer, is an apt demonstration of some of the powers of “RiTa,” as it uses algorithms to find the bridges between English words, Six-Degrees-of-Kevin-Bacon-style — not bridges of garbled nonsense but composed of normative English. You will spend either 10 seconds or 5 minutes staring at this thing; you will also see either a bunch of random words, or occasionally, if not always, engaging samples of minimalist poetry.

  3. There he was, gone.

    How do we piece together a story like this one? A mystery. The title offers more questions than answers. There he was, gone. Where is there? Who is he? Where has he gone? How is this sentence even possible? There he was, not there. As if "he" is in two places and in no place, both at once. The once of "once upon a time." This story has to do with time. This story has to do with place. That much is clear. We take time to look around the story space. What do we see? A corner of a map. An abstraction of a place too detailed to place, unless the places it names are already familiar. Is this a local story then? For locals, between locals… if we do not know the answer to this question, then we are not local. We seem to have stumbled upon an ongoing conversation. Listen. A dialogue of sorts. It's too late. An argument, even. One interlocutor instigates. Can't you feel anything? The other obfuscates. It's only the spring squalls over the bay. All that's not said between these two hangs in a heavy mist, a sea fret low over a small fishing boat turned broadside to a pack of hump-backed slick black rocks. This story is fishing inshore.

  4. The Broadside of a Yarn

    The Broadside of a Yarn is a multi-modal performative pervasive networked narrative attempt to chart fictional fragments of new and long-ago stories of near and far-away seas with naught but a QR reader and a hand-made map of dubious accuracy. This project may perhaps be best understood as an assemblage of interrelated narrative elements mediated across a continuum forms - a collection of stories, a folio of broadsides, or an unbound atlas of impossible maps composed of a combination of historical sources, interspersed with "found" images, quotations from well known sailors’ yarns, and my own drawings and photographs, and fiction. These printed maps are embedded with QR codes link mobile devices to computer-generated narrative dialogues which may then serve as scripts for poli-vocal performances, and/or suggest a series of imprecise pervasive performative walks. This project is, in a Situationist sense, a wilfully absurd endeavour. How can I, a displaced native of rural Nova Scotia (New Scotland), perform the navigation of a narrative route through urban Edinburgh (Old Scotland)?

    Our webscapes and netvilles are increasingly dominated by short bursts of emotional language, brief stabs of charged textual opinion. And every minute those words build small cities of influence, beauty and terror, creating brief communities of poetic power. Textual Skyline explores these notions through a net­-based interactive, generative and multidimensional flash engine/interface using RSS news feeds to create a digital poetry city.

  6. The Black Chamber

    The Cabinet Noir was the name given in France for the secret office where the post of suspected persons was opened and inspected before being forwarded to its final recipient. Governments since have used similar Black Chambers to spy on their populations communication via telegram, telephone and internet media. In order to avoid detection, some individuals have resorted to the technique of Steganography, where communications are hidden in seemingly innocent messages. This can lead to a state of paranoia where every text may contain evidence of nefarious intentions. This work takes the email exchange and data produced for the WEISE7 Labor exhibition and mixes it with the text of Edgar Allan Poe's detective story The Purloined Letter. The result is a paranoid archive of implied subtext.

  7. Notes on the Voyage of Owl and Girl

    Notes on the Voyage of Owl and Girl is a work of digital fiction. Any resemblance to actual events, persons, places or texts is entirely intentional. Details from many a high sea story have been netted by this net-worked work. The combinatorial powers of computer-generated narrative conflate and confabulate characters, facts, and forms of narrative accounts of sea voyages into the unknown North undertaken over the past 2340 years. At the furthest edge of this assemblage floats the fantastical classical island of Ultima Thule and the strange phenomenon known to the Romans as sea lung. Sprung from Edward Leer’s Victorian nonsense poem, a lazy and somewhat laconic owl and a girl most serious, most adventurous, most determined, have set sail toward this strange sea in a boat of pea-, bottle-, lima-bean- or similar shade of green.

    This bot mines the Twitter stream for phrases starting with “when,” extracts the clauses, and joins each phrase with a randomly selected animated GIF in a Tumblr. Here’s a more detailed description from Parrish’s blog: A “#whatshouldwecallme-style tumblr” is one in which animated GIFs are paired with a title expressing a circumstance or mood—usually a clause beginning with “when.” I wrote a Python script to make these kinds of posts automatically. Here’s what it does: (1) Search Twitter for tweets containing the word “when.” (2) Extract the “when” clause from such tweets. (3) Use Pattern to identify “when” clauses with suitable syntax (i.e., clauses in which a subject directly follows “when”; plus some other heuristic fudging) (4) Post the “when” clause as the title of a tumblr post, along with an animated GIF randomly chosen from the imgur gallery. This is both a critique and homage of the #whatshouldwecallme tumblr and the meme it inspired.

    This cleverly named bot finds haiku in the twitterverse and republishes them in a recognizable format. The program “runs on @johndburger’s laptop” and even though the code isn’t available, the basic procedure can be inferred from the results as a set of steps: 1: The program uses Twitter API to pull tweets to analyze, filtering out anything that isn’t in English. 2: It uses some sort of library, like the Wordnik API to identify and count the number of syllables in all the words obtaining a total for the tweet. With this procedure, it can identify tweets with exactly 17 syllables. 3: It then determines which of those tweets can be divided into three lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables without cutting into any words. 4: It formats the results to add: line breaks, a ” •” symbol at the end of the first two lines (to signal line breaks for Twitter clients that don’t support them), attribution to the writer of the original tweet, and the #haiku hashtag. 5: Burger then selects the best haiku or simply posts the raw results (I’m not sure), and manually post or schedules about 6 tweets per day with a 4-5 hour interval between them.
