  1. exquisite_code

exquisite_code is an algorithmic performance system for heterogeneous groups of writers. The writers generate prompts and responses for var1 minute session at the end of which computational devices select/mangle text according to var2 edit. Mangled text outputs get displayed to writers who, in unrelenting sessions, generate further prompts and responses, with chunk on chunk piled up to create a c[ad]aver[n]ous exquisite_code life-work.

  2. Searchsonata 181

  4. Baby Work

BABY WORK is the 3rd edition of Cheang's LOCKER BABY PROJECT which consist of:
BABY PLAY (2001, NTT[ICC], Tokyo) and BABY LOVE (2005, Palais de Tokyo, Paris).
The Locker Baby project conceived in 2001 reflects a time when bioscience is accused
of out of control and scifi fantasia brings forward the future. Deriving from Ryu
Murakami's noted novel Coin Locker Babies (1980) of post-war Japan , the Locker Baby
Project further contests the mother’s heart beats that are so desired for clone babies
born out of lockers. A fictional scenario set in 2030 - the transnational DPT (DollyPolly
Transgency) produces and engages clone locker babies in negotiating human "Memory"
and "Emotion”. The clone baby holds the key to retrieve the networked inter-sphere of
ME-data embedded in a playfield of sonic imagery triggered only by human interaction.
In BABY PLAY, an oversized baby football field with clone baby players; in BABY LOVE, a
ride in 6 motorized fairground teacups with love song remixed by clone babies; in BABY

  5. B A C K L I T

B A C K L I T seeks to invite the recombination of word and image from translocal communities of conversants on diverse e-list servers, Facebook, and Twitter. Members of list‐servers are asked to send both an image and a text of no more than 140 characters to performer, and to do so in response to thought processes/actions given rise to by the phrase "Remediating the Social". The performer will recombine those elements. The piece itself is simple, complexity will be generated by the volume of submissions.

  6. Borderline

Borderline is a performative piece concerned with time-based and improvisational action, in which two participants interact together within an audio-visual environment to gain a sense of the project’s latent narrative identities. Borderline will re-deploy VJ software technologies (using MIDI with MAX-MSP) to develop a dual interaction experience that uses hand-based gesture (via two graphic tablets and their pens) instead of the established hyperlink model. This will help foster a ‘computer system as instrument’ analogy in which the participants’ can ‘improvise’ ‘play’ or ‘perform’ set of narrative dualities. An often-levied criticism of VJ output is its preference for visual abstraction over content (Amerika 2005). In terms of the narrative, Leishman will both develop a new bank of non-abstract imagery, audio and animation to convey the theme of dualism. This will be based on research into borderline personality disorder (visualizing the problems of disassociation and hysteria through image, movement and narrative structure).
