Pacific Surfliner: San Juan Capistrano
Pacific Surfliner is one in a series of videos that map the route of the Pacific Surfliner along the California coast – San Diego to San Luis Obispo. In so doing, they trace a kind of life story of a certain generation in time – arrivals and departures over the years, joy and loss. While San Juan Capistrano is a kind of central piece, touching on many life transformations, each piece takes a central emotion from its location. The individual videos are layered with images, sound, and text –experimenting with storytelling modes.
Author's statement:
Spoken screens: the gap between presence and performance. One of the challenging issues with e-literature has been the relationship between reading a work and watching it performed. Some time-based or video work discourages the performative reading aspect altogether. Pacific Surfliner suggests a new approach – a text-rich, time-based piece that can be performed (or read silently).

The Book of Hours
The Book of Hours is a calendar of poetry films. There is a poetry film for now and for different times of day, for every month of the year.
The Book of Hours is a contemporary re-imagining of a Medieval book of hours. These were collections of exquisitely hand-illustrated religious readings and accompanying images. They were created in a handy size so they could be carried by the owner and read on a daily basis. They can also be seen as interactive texts as these books were not intended to be read chronologically. This Book of Hours is secular but the general mood is contemplative and reflective.
All the films have been made in collaboration between Lucy English, a UK based spoken word poet, and an international community of film makers.

A Physical Book
A Physical Book makes a digitized book “physical” by rendering it in a simulated space where properties like gravity, friction, and velocity all apply. The program randomly perturbs the letters, then takes a snapshot at a point in time, re-assembling the images into a new, “un-digitized” book.
