  1. Pushkin Translation

    Megan Sapnar’s Pushkin Translation, published on Poems that Go presents a poem by Aleksandr Pushkin in Russian, translated by Dimitry Brill. As the reader moves the cursor over the poem, the text is revealed in English and read aloud in Russian. In the background, a Russian folk song recorded by the Ospipov State Russian Folk Orchestra plays. The work includes a long titles sequence that gives credit not only to the author, the translator, and the musical performers, but also FreaKaZoid, a Flash programmer from whom Sapnar got some help on the actionscript implementation.   2. The Glide Project

    Glide is a dynamic visual language that originated in the context of Slattery's novel, The Maze Game. The materials available on the website use a strategy of multimodal means of self-presentation: narration, animation, translation, divination, game design, and appropriation of theoretical ideas that suit its purposes. Glide, at play on mutable media, modestly conceals the extravagance of its evolutionary intentions behind thin veils of noetic license.

    There are several interactive sections of the website:
    1) a full lexicon;
    2) The Glide oracle, called The Wine of the Lilies, contains a suite of auxiliary Glide language tools: two libraries of interpretations of combinations of glyphs, one static and one dynamic, (over 2000 entries); and a rich library of graphics and music compositions;
    3) the Collabyrinth, a full Glide language glyph editor. The Collabyrinth invites the user to experiment with the language by arranging glyphs, seeing how they can be linked and nested, changing their properties such as size, color, orientation, and creating animated glyphs by morphing between one glyph and another.

  3. Poetic Machines: an investigation into the impact of the characteristics of the digital apparatus on poetic expression

    This thesis aims to investigate digital methods of signification in order to examine the impact of the apparatus on poetic expression. This is done through a critical analysis of the translation process from analogue to digital, in the sense that even as we read a page we are in fact translating sight into sound. The resulting effects of this change in form are explored in order to understand their impact on meaning-making in the digital realm. Through this interrogation the comprehension and definition of ePoetry (electronic poetry or digital poetry) is extended, by exposing the unique affordances and specificities of digital expression. Digital poetry theorists such as Loss Pequeño Glazier posit that the emerging field of electronic literature is composed of interweaving strands from the areas of computer science, sociology, and literary studies. This is reflected in the interdisciplinary nature of this thesis, which necessitates an engagement with the broad areas of translation, literature, and digital media studies.

  6. Bare Bones

    Fairy tales have been hijacked throughout history for various uses. Emigrating from one distribution method to another, they have been duplicated, mistranslated, and subverted. It could be that Cinderella is the world's most-told tale. There are thousands of versions, each one colored by the details of local culture, the needs of its audience and the desires of its teller. Buried among the world's heap of Cinder tales, is the Russian version, in its multiple incarnations. Bare Bones is a retelling of this story about a girl and her encounter with the fearsome hag, Baba Yaga.

    We identify with this tale through our own experiences of loss, humiliation and enslavement. By reshaping its text, imagery and format, I try to build a bridge for the fairy tale audience between traditional media and digital media. Bare Bones is just one piece of The Vas(i)lisa Project which is more visually and texually complex.

  7. Невидимые города (Invisible Cities)

    "Невидимые города" состоят из 55 главок, в каждой из которых Марко Поло описывает Кублай-Хану некий якобы посещенный им город его империи. (Вопрос о внутрироманной реальности Кублая, Марко, правдивости его рассказов и соотношении повествоательных уровней довольно сложен и подробно мною уже рассматривался отдельно). Эти 55 главок-городов распределены, с одной стороны, по одиннадцати "тематическим группам", названных по какому-то одному преобладающему признаку или свойству описания ("города и память", "города и глаза" и т.д.), а с другой стороны, по девяти главам, по пять описаний в каждом (кроме первой и последней главы, где их по десять). Каждая глава обрамлена интермедиями-диалогами Марко и Кублая. При преобразовании в гипертекст противопоставление "с одной стороны - с другой стороны" получило зримое воплощение: тематическая структура книги отражается в правом фрейме, а поглавная - в левом. Эти фреймы двухуровневые; возврат от низшего уровня (все города одной темы или одной главы) к высшему (перечень всех тем или список всех глав) осуществляется при помощи картинки.

  8. Challenging Tongues: The “Irreducible Hybridity” of Language in Contemporary Bilingual Poetry

    Contemporary bilingual poetry provides readers with an opportunity to explore and better understand how contemporary artists address the reality of their linguistic contexts. These works pose a challenge to traditional canonical (often national) literatures; furthermore, bilingual poets are keenly attuned to the ways language use represents the personal and political values at stake for their cultures. Bilingual poetry functions as a site of translation where languages interact within the text without traditional demarcations of original and translated text, representing a larger ideological challenge to institutional hierarchies that are often imposed on language. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Internet has fostered bilingual poetry; the quality and proliferation of these works emphasise the need for more critical recognition of this form of expression. The friction, fluidity, cacophony, and subversive impulse of bilingual poetry embodies the convergence of enmity and rapport experienced by the very real speech communities that give them context.

  9. Traduire et préserver des œuvres numériques : Les projets du Laboratoire NT2 : La revue bleuOrange et L’Abécédaire du Web

    Dans le cadre du thème “Chercher le texte nunérique” les Laboratoires NT2 proposent une table ronde afin d’aborder la question de la préservation et de la traduction de la littérature hypermédiatique. Par littérature hypermédiatique, les Laboratoires NT2 entendent des œuvres ayant un contenu littéraire et faisant usage des technologies numériques. Ce sont des œuvres qui combinent matériau textuel et multimédia (sons, images, vidéos, etc.), des hypertextes, des textes générés par ordinateur, des fictions interactives, etc. Lors de cette table ronde, nous présenterons l’importance ainsi que la difficulté de traduire les œuvres de ce corpus. L’importance découle du mandat des Laboratoires NT2 de faire connaître en français cette littérature. La difficulté résulte dans la traduction d’œuvres qui doivent se faire en équipe, avec des créateurs qui n’ont plus toujours accès au code informatique de leur travail ou qui doivent le reprogrammer, c'est-à-dire, retraduire leur propre œuvre pour l’adaptation de leur œuvre vers le français.

  10. Spars of Language Lost at Sea

    Our poetry generator, Sea and Spar Between, was fashioned based on Emily Dickinson’s poems and Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. Both in its original edition and in the edition expanded with comments—cut to fit the toolspun course—it exemplifies seven different ways to seek and grasp text: 1) by porting code; 2) by translating text strings and processes; 3) by contrasting the page/canvas experience via a link or URL with the experience of reading code via “View Source”; 4) by harpooning a particular stanza and using the browser’s capability for bookmarking; 5) by creating human-readable glosses of code for readers who may not identify as programmers; 6) by relating its depthless virtual space to the import of Mallarmé’s Coup de dés as interpreted by Quentin Meillassoux; 7) by foregrounding non-translatability as a characterizing sieve for natural languages.
