    This paper looks at Nick Smith's (aka ulilllillia) "Mind Game" as an illustration of how augmented reality systems, while based in digital media, do not necessarily rely on digital software or hardware, but in the influence of digitally-mediated practices on the imagination. !Smith's "Mind Game" constitutes a form of experiential poetry mediated through augmented reality.

  2. Minecrafted Meaning: The Rhetoric of Poetry in Game Environments

    This essay is a synopsis of my fourth chapter from my dissertation. My research consists of game-poems and how they fundamentally alter the experience of “reading” poetry. Ultimately, my argument is that poetic experience is no longer initiated by text, but by the kinetic, audible, visual, and tactile functions in the digital environment that I label as trans-medial space; in effect, these functions sustain the poetry experience, and, thus, require the reader/user of the poem to play, rather than read, as a new form of “reading” the digital game-poem in order experience and interpret a poem’s meaning.

  3. "A Machine Made of Words by a Machine Made of Numbers"- Authorial Presence in Niemi’s Stud Poetry

    Primary Text: Marko Niemi’s Stud Poetry, a demo of which would run during the presentation.

    The paper opens with a brief discussion of the inherently conservative nature of the ELO’s definition of electronic-literature and the critical tendencies which this encourages. It has a strong focus on those critics who identify the forms which electronic literature has taken as an extension of modernist experimentation in the Twentieth Century, while disregarding the new possibilities which programmable media furnishes the poet with.

    These possibilities are manifest in Niemi’s Stud Poetry, a text which has been consistently overlooked since its publication, perhaps because it presents a challenge to the dominant critical trends. Stud Poetry cannot fully be understood in terms of print-based modernist experimentation, Dada or Burroughs, because it would be impossible to achieve without a computer program. Niemi wrote the code which ‘writes’ each poem/game.

  4. Au seuil du livre : les œuvres hypermédiatiques d’Andy Campbell (The Rut, Surface, Paperwound)

    Avec l’avènement de la cyberculture, on aurait pu croire, sinon à la disparition du livre, du moins à son usure en tant que modèle. Mais, dans les faits, nous assistons plutôt sur le Web à une prolifération des figures du livre. À cet égard, les œuvres hypermédiatiques d’Andy Campbell sont révélatrices. Sur son site, intitulé Dreaming Methods, il élabore une véritable poétique de la figure du livre et du papier en hypermédia. Toutefois, on le démontrera, chez Campbell, le livre fait moins l’objet d’un hommage qu’il est une figure à déconstruire par l’hypermédia (Cf. Paperwounds, et Surface). Nous nous attacherons à l’analyse précise de The Rut, présenté comme : « A self published book that never get back the front cover ». L’œuvre est composée des quinze versions du péritexte du livre simulé de Max Penn. The Rut, apparaît dans un premier temps comme un livre sans contenu, où la narration est déportée dans la fictionnalisation d’un péritexte, dont le sérieux et le formalisme se délite à chacune de ses occurrences.

  5. Out of Bounds: Searching Deviated Literature in Audiovisual Electronic Environments

    In this presentation I propose a close/distant reading of some Argentinean e-poetry works –Migraciones and Outsource me! by Leonardo Solaas and TextField, Eliotians and some of the works of The Disasters by Iván Marino– in order to pose a debate concerning the development of e-poetry in audiovisual electronic environments, particularly e-poetry created by artists/programmers who hardly would defined themselves as poets or writers.To what extent one should still speak about literature concerning this kind of works? Is it possible to find a literary impulse in contexts where literature has lost its privileges and migrates “out of bounds”? If the artists mentioned above lean themselves into literary traditions, why are their works more frequently regarded by visual art critics rather than literary critics? I argue that the works analyzed enable us to resituate literature in inter/trans media contexts, which nevertheless are readable in terms of literary effects.

  6. Read Fast, Die Young? – Interpreting Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries’ Flash Poem Dakota

    In this paper I discuss Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries’ digital poem Dakota. I discuss how the poem controls the reader’s experience and how this control affects its possible interpretations. The control is mostly executed by limiting the reader’s freedom over reading. Reading time, direction and duration are determined by the poem. It is only possible to start the poem, but not rewind, stop or fast-forward it. Furthermore, the manipulation of speed affects reading in many ways. In the fast extreme the effect is illegibility, but more subtly used speed creates varieties of emphasis and de-emphasis. The effect of emphasis of this kind, I argue, creates different layers of readings and invites re-reading. These different readings require different cognitive modes, which mirror our contemporary reading habits. Not being in control of the reading process also leads to a scattered sense of unity, one of postmodernism’s essential traits. While reading the poem I also question why I read as I do, and by doing so I hope to present more general traits of how to approach digital literature.

  8. Beyond the Googlization of Literature: Writing Other Networks

    It's true, poets have been experimenting with producing writing (or simply writing, just writing of a sort not familiar to us - writing as input and writing as choosing) with the aid of digital computer algorithms since Max Bense and Theo Lutz first experimented with computer-generated writing in 1959. What is new and particular to the 21st century literary landscape is a revived interest in the underlying workings of algorithms, not just a concern with the surface-level effects and results that characterized much of the fascination in the 1970s and 1980s with computer-generated writing. With the ever-increasing power of algorithms, especially search engine algorithms that attempt not just to "know" us but to in fact anticipate and so shape our every desire, our passive acceptance of these algorithms necessarily means we cannot have any sense of the shape and scope of how they determine our access to information, let alone shape our sense of self which is increasingly driven by autocomplete, autocorrect, automata.

  9. Teaching Creative Writing with Python

    The course concerns the classic tension in poetry between decontextualization and juxtaposition: deciding what a text’s constituent elements are, breaking the text into those elements, and then bringing them back together in surprising and interesting ways. Students are taught not just about string processing and text analysis, but also about the poetic possibilities of using those techniques to algorithmically build new texts. Each semester, the course culminates in a live performance, in which each student must read aloud for an audience a text that one of their programs has generated.

  10. 'The frame of the sparkling graphics': the window and the screen in contemporary Irish poetry

    This conference paper discusses the visual tropes of the window and the screen in the work of Derek Mahon and Alan Gillis. More specifically, the focus is on how the architectural window and the digital screen operate as framing devices in their works, and how they enable the poets to interrogate the interrelationship between poetry as verbal discourse, and visual representation. The shift from the architectural window to a digital window on the screen also marks a shift in understanding questions of viewpoint and perspective in contemporary culture.
