    This multimedia hypertext work weaves together unpopulated images, ambient sounds, and the text of overheard conversations in several cities to produce an immersive experience of a journey. Best experienced in cinematic conditions (good speakers or headphones, large screen, dark room, no distractions, fullscreen browser window), this is a navigationally minimalist. Each image has an area you can click on to go to the next, and it’s not difficult to find, since it tends to be large and placed over a focal point in the photograph. The simplicity of the interface and knowing from the outset that it is a linear experience, allows readers to relax into the work and not be distracted by wondering about where to go or what decision to make.   2. Spam Poem for Paul Graham

    his poem is inspired on spam (unsolicited commercial mail), the “wars” that have developed around them, their impact on language generated for distribution in digital environments, and the poetry that can result from such dynamics. The poem’s paratext links to a 2002 essay by Graham that proposes “naive Bayesian filters” to identify language patterns in spam and produce effective filters with low false positives. Poundstone notes that the response from spammers was to shift tactics to generating more “poetic” messages, along with mining literary texts for human generated language and language patterns.   3. Walking Together What Remains

    This found poem is built from language in roadside garbage (specifically “pieces that had been in people’s mouths”) found and selected by Chris Green during a 30 minute walk during the first day of Spring in the year 2000. The lines composed from this fascinating set of constraints are a snapshot of what litterbugs in central Kentucky were eating in their cars or as they walked by a road— a kind of poetic ethnography. Each line of this poem is superposed over an artistic photograph that shows a portion of the found object and contains a footnote for each describing the object in the photograph and poetic line. The interface is a horizontally scrolling slideshow on a brief timer (that pauses while you place the pointer over the footnote), evoking the sequential structure of a walk. One fascinating aspect of this poem is how the punctuation between lines creates relations between the lines that might otherwise be lost, given an interface that promotes individual attention to each “slide.” (Source: Leonardo Flores, I ♥ E-Poetry)

  4. Anywhere

    This collaborative poem combines the Steve Matanle’s words and voice with Ingrid Ankerson’s music and design to produce a well integrated multimedia performance. The poem plays like a short film, requiring no interaction from the readers but commanding aural and visual attention with engaging music, a richly textured vocal performance, and visuals that enhance the experience of the poem. Some lines in the poem are punctuated by the appearance of text, brief animation sequences, and graphical information that enriches the imagery evoked in the spoken words. Timing is all in this brief poem which synchronizes its visuals with the music and rhythms of Matanle’s voice to tell a story of a forbidden love affair that is hurtling towards a destination as inevitable as the train tracks laid across the poem’s visual field.

  5. Bus

    “Bus” creates a soundscape of the interior of a bus in an urban location, and then uses a black screen for over a minute at the beginning of the piece to focus our attention on the aural information. When the narrative prose starts to flow on the screen, the narrator can focus on describing what he sees and we become immersed in his observations without needing further elaboration on the setting we’re in.     Aptly called a novel, this serially published multimedia work uses games, images, video, and narrative prose cut into portions that use poetic tactics for delivery of ideas and story. And it is beautifully integrated, layer by layer, moment by moment, to deliver a poignant narrative about a girl named Alice who exemplifies her media-savvy generation.   7. Birdfall

    “Birdfall” deconstructs a single narrative sentence written in conventional English and slowly transforming it into mezangelle. As you scroll down the window to read each line and prose poetry paragraph, the language becomes stranger as she inserts extended passages in brackets inside of words, shifts spelling to homophones with different meanings, adds self-referential metatext that suggests links, and more. She uses animated GIFs in the background and foreground to signal to readers that there there are shifting intentions, language, and narrative— as if the ground on which this text is placed is unstable.   8. Unravel

    This scheduled poem plays like a silent video composed of a series of photographs of a wheat field in the background and kinetic language in the foreground. The text unfolds through a series of transformations of words by moving letters around into to form other words, and letter substitutions that create rapid word sequences. Timing is all in this poem, which could be organized internally by the speed at which its words are transformed and the means by which they change from one to the next. Notice the speed at which a sequence of four letter words change through letter substitution, forming a stream of associations, and the emphasis this gives to the pause at the end. Contrast this to the longer words that transform into other words by moving letters around, emphasizing each word and its meaning as moments with a thematic charge that punctuates the poem.

  9. Útero portanto Cosmos (Uterus therefore Cosmos)

    According to its author, Agnus Valente, “Uterus therefore Cosmos” is a kind of work in progress developed during the years 2003 to 2007. In this project, several e-poems created by Valente and his twin brother, Nardo Germano, explores the expressive and conceptual potential of the World Wide Web. “Uterus therefore Cosmos” brings together in one digital environment, works by visual artists, poets and musicians from different eras. Valente proposes a dialogue between his poems authored with his brother and the work of brazilian poets and visual artists. ”Uterus therefore Cosmos” is metaphorically a project of astronomical dimensions. Conceived as a trilogy, the project presents in one website its three stages of creation: “Online Pregnancy” (2003), “Constellations” (2005) and “Expansions” (2007). A keyword to analyze this work is “hybridization”. In this context, the term refers to the ability of mixing signs, senses, media and languages and where all this mixing occurs is undoubtedly the digital medium.
