    This presentation gives an overview of Dutch and Belgium communities of creators of digital literature. Van Dijk elaborates on the question of the government-funded initiatives in the Low Countries and the results of these, and the possible effects of funded communities on the content of the work.

  2. Hypertext Fiction from 1987-1999

    I will outline the development of the hypertext fiction community that developed from the late eighties and onwards. This community was separate from the interactive fiction community (and largely thought of its works as different from “games”) and largely revolved around the use of Storyspace, a software tool for creating electronic literature, and later, around Eastgate, a publisher of hypertext fiction and the company that developed Storyspace. While some work was written and published in Hypercard and other systems, the technology of a dominant software authoring tool and of the mechanics of distribution (diskettes sold by mail order) formed the hub of the electronic literature community during this period. There was little or no communication with other communities, such as the IF community or digital art communities. With the advent of the web, new authoring and distribution channels opened up, and this hub gradually lost its dominance. The transition from this relatively centralised and explicit community to the networked communities and scattered individuals of the web is an interesting one to explore.

  3. LYMS

    In the video lyms (which is a non-semantic word), I have solved the question of translation in a special way: words in different languages like spanish, french, german, english and scandinavian are put together.  None of them have the same meaning, the viewer may just taste on the words.  In the first part of the video all the words are starting with f.  In the beginning the f's are exposed in a way they constitute different pictures. The system of the expositions are based on how I made concrete poetry in the sixties. Instead of repeating them differently line by line, the new technology allows me to expose them differently through time.  Then more and more letters are shown, until all the words are exposed.

    Each viewer will have a different experience dependent upon their language background, and the ability to enjoy the poetic combination of the words and the visuality together with the music.

  4. À bribes abattues

    L’œuvre de Philippe Bootz « À bribes abattues » est bien nommée parce que chaque poème animé utilise les mêmes mots jusqu’à ce que leur signification soit abattue. « Bribes » fait référence aux mots individuels qui jouent sur l’écran, mais aussi aux lettres dans les mots qui changent de façon indépendante pour changer la signification des mots et des strophes. Le titre est aussi un jeu de mot avec la phrase « à bride abattue » qui veut dire « à toute vitesse. » Le lecteur choisit quelle œuvre il va « lire » (entre guillemets parce qu’on fait beaucoup plus que lire ces œuvres, on en fait une expérience). Le choix nous donne la sensation de prise, mais en fait c’est un peu comme choisir un poème dans une anthologie. On ne fait que choisir l’œuvre ou la page ; on n’a aucun influence sur le texte-même.

  5. Distributed Authorship and Creative Communities

    In its requirement, for both an author and reader, art can be considered a participatory activity. Expanded concepts of agency allow us to question what or who can be an active participant, allowing us to revisit the debate on authorship from alternate perspectives. We can ask whether creativity might be regarded as a form of social interaction, rather than an outcome. How might we understand creativity as interaction between people and things, as sets of discursive relations rather than outcomes?

    Whilst creativity is often perceived as the product of the individual artist, or creative ensemble, it can also be considered an emergent phenomenon of communities, driving change and facilitating individual or ensemble creativity. Creativity can be a performative activity released when engaged through and by a community and understood as a process of interaction.

  6. Digital Literature in France

    Serge Bouchardon's paper concludes with the observation that the field of digital literature "is based on each country's own conception of literariness, of the digital medium, as well as on the relation between the two" and completes his article with a question to be considered in future research on communities, asking if digital literature is a coherent international field or a mere collection of cultural specificities. Giving an account of how digital literature in France evolved theoretically and historically through the creation of creative works and their traditional filiations, within a study of two socio-technical devices, he also analyzes how a particular mailing list, "a reflexive device" of a community possibly contributes to the construction of the field. His contribution comes along with a rich collection of links to various French actors in the field.
