  1. Piecing Together and Tearing Apart: Finding the Story in afternoon

    This paper is a reading of a classic of hypertext narrative: Michael Joyce’s afternoon, a story. Several writers have discussed afternoon previously. However I have chosen to explore afternoon from a different angle by using theories of narratology, especially Genette. In this reading, I explore ways in which the text confuses the reader but also the many stabilising elements that aid the reader to piece together a story.

  2. Junction of Image, Text, and Sound in Net.fictions

    Since modernism, the experimental art has been filled with the flow of “intermedial turn“, projected in/through all its forms and has found one of its ”stations“ in the form of digital fictions. The subject of my attention lies in the research and analysis of the multimedial fictions on internet through the junction of image, text and sound into the communicative unit. I implement the narratological point of view, and perceive these works of art also from the prism of their reception and subsequent reader’s projection of the fictional world, which could result in her immersion in it.

  3. All Together Now: Collective Knowledge, Collective. Narratives, and Architectures of Participation

    This essay is an exploration of the history and methodologies of collective narrative projects, and their relationship to collective knowledge projects and methodologies. By examining different forms of conscious, contributory, and unwitting participation, the essay attempts to develop a richer understanding of successful large-scale collaborative projects. The essay then examines large-scale architectures of participation in Wikipedia and Flickr to extrapolate from those observations potential methodologies for the creation of collective narratives.

  4. "Uncle Roger", an Online Narrabase

    Uncle Roger is a "narrabase" or narrative database. It was first told as an online serial on Art Com Electronic Network (ACEN) and then was published as an interactive online database on ACEN. It is also available as computer software for both Apple II and IBM-compatible computers. The narrabase form uses a computer database to build up levels of meaning. The artist explains how this form evolved from her visual books and her information databases. She discusses the story and structure of Uncle Roger and describes how the story was told and published in an online community. In the conclusion she discusses the future of computer literature.

  5. Three-Dimensional Dementia: Hypertext Fiction and the Aesthetics of Forgetting

    Hypertext (the non-sequential linking of text(s) and images) was first envisioned by Vannevar Bush and Ted Nelson in its prehistory as an associational, archival storage system suitable for classifying and sorting vast quantities of information. But where library databases, technical manuals and other knowledge-based hypertexts still fulfill this function, literary hypertext overturns this proposed usage, celebrating both information overload and forgetfulness as the desired end of a reading. Promoting disassociation and an awareness of the spatio-temporal dimensions of its environment, hypertext fiction uses the aesthetics of its three-dimensional interface and structure to frustrate memory and to engender a sensory and emotional response in the reader. Focusing on M.D. Coverley's multimedia hypertext Califia, I will investigate how the aesthetics of the hypertext form become an engine of forgetfulness that drives her text through its explorations of lost memories, including the ravages of Alzheimer's, unofficial histories, secrets, missing pieces and the quest for hidden treasure.

  6. Cybertext Narratology

    "Cybertext Narratology" combines Espen Aarseth's textonomy and typology of cybertexts to three advanced models of narrativity: narratology (Gerard Genette, Seymour Chatman, Gerald Prince), postmodernist fiction (Brian McHale), and the combinatorial and procedural writing(s) of OuLiPo (Marcel Benabou, Jacques Roubaud).

    The basic and most important distinctions, categories and concepts derived from these approaches are systematically examined, expanded and rewritten in order to map out and include narrative possibilities and practices inherent to and emerged with literary cybertexts and digital textuality in general. The matters of tense, mood and voice are closely studied as well as those of trans- textuality, audibility, reliability and narrative situation.

  7. Reclaiming the 'Golden Age': The Second Person in Digital Fiction

    Since the demise of the 'Golden Age' of literary hypertext (Coover 1999) and the theoretical debates surrounding online and offline electronic literature that followed in its wake, the study of digital fiction in particular has undergone a significant paradigm shift. Recent research has moved from a 'first-wave' of pure theoretical debate to a 'second-wave' of close stylistic and semiotic analysis. While the theoretical intricacies of second-wave digital fiction theory have been well debated (e.g. Ciccoricco 2007, Ensslin 2007, Ensslin and Bell 2007, Bell 2010 forthcoming), the discipline and practice of close-reading digital fiction require a more systematic engagement and understanding than offered by previous scholarship.

  8. Writing Digital Media

    There has been quite a bit of debate about the relationship between games and fiction, with important discussions in Wardrip-Fruin and Harrigan's First Person, Jesper Juul's Half-Real, Marie-Laure Ryan's Avatars of Story, and others.  In parallel with this, a number of electronic literature authors have been creating games -- or at least playable experiences -- that have as their focus and reward for play an experience of story, such as Mateas and Stern's Facade, Emily Shorts Galatea, and Stuart Moulthrop's Pax.

  9. New Plots for Hypertext?: Towards a Poetics of the Hypertext Node

    While the significance of hypertext links for the new ways of telling stories has been widely discussed, there has been not many debates about the very elements that are being connected: hypertext nodes. Apart from few exceptions, poetics of the link overshadows poetics of the node. My goal is to re-focus on a single node, or lexia, by introducing the concept of contextual regulation as the major force that shapes hypertext narrative units. Because many lexias must be capable of occurring in different contexts and at different stages of the unfolding story, several compromises have to be made on the level of language, style, plot and discourse. Each node, depending on its position and importance, has a varying level of connectivity and autonomy, which affects the global coherence of text.

  10. Storyspace 1

    Storyspace, a hypertext writing environment, has been widely used for writing, reading, and research for nearly fifteen years. The appearance of a new implementation provides a suitable occasion to review the design of Storyspace, both in its historical context and in the context of contemporary research. Of particular interest is the opportunity to examine its use in a variety of published documents, all created within one system, but spanning the most of the history of literary hypertext.

    EDITOR'S NOTE: This paper is interesting for the technical background it provides on many often-analysed works of electronic literature.
