  4. Softies

    Softies is a series of animated, typographic poems created with the Mr. Softie vector typographics
    editor. The author describes these works as “wrinkled squirming typographic poems (fresh in 2009).”
    Because of its malleable form, the work forces the user to move and engage with it. The ongoing
    reshaping of the words and the ambient music playing in the background add to its hypnotic quality.

  5. Free Haiku!

    This “reactive” (a.k.a. responsive or interactive) poem does an admirable job of representing the haiku in digital media, much like “Basho’s Frogger” by Neil Hennessy. Built upon a looping image of a drawing of a tree changing through the seasons, while a stick figure walks across the screen representing its shifting mood through body language. As the reader moves the pointer on the screen, different words emerge, allowing for the discovery of different phrases, depending upon one’s mouse movements. Juxtaposition of images and a connection to nature along with the speaker’s “posture” towards the material are all represented in this brief poem. The question of the title remains: is this a “free haiku” because it is offered gratis or because it has somehow been liberated from convention? Both readings are plausible, given the politics and poetics of Dada.

  6. [raveling]

    "[raveling]"

    [raveling] is a poetry performance piece for machines and human about memory and communication which posits verbal communication and text as iterative rituals that can mutate and change over time, distance, and repetition.

    Prior to the piece I produced a poem with my computer. This performance was a stream-of-consciousness spoken word event and was translated by the machine. My computer synthesized the words it recognized and I saved these words into a rough poem.

    In performance I read this synthesized computer/human poem to the public and to computer #1. This first computer/performer will listen to the poem and after listening, read back the composition as it recognized aloud to the audience and to the second computer/performer. The second computer/performer will listen to the poem composed by the first computer and read back the poem it recognized aloud to the audience. Each computer and human has its own voice and vocal qualities including timbre, speed, etc. They work together to bring meaning to the piece.

    Onderdeel van Tsead Bruinjas poeziebundel 'Overwoekerd.' Het gedicht heeft meerdere animaties die gemaakt zijn door studenten van Artez. Zij maakten gebruik van beeld, geluid, interactie en typografie.
