  2. Space and Landscape in Hearts and Minds: The Interrogation Project – Uncomfortable Proximities

This article focuses on the panoramic digital work Hearts and Minds: The Interrogations Project, and examines how it uses immersive audiovisual experience to examine the relationship between narrative memory, space and landscape. It argues that the spatial aesthetic of the work forces the audience members, the artists, and the narrators to interrogate their own conflicted positions in relation to the narratives of military power and torture. Hearts and Minds engages with visual perspective and space, and focalization through individual human voices, to consider agency, victimhood, witnessing and trauma, and does this in a manner that denies its audience a detached position from which to observe the events set in its digitally created environment.

  3. A NOTE FROM THE EDITORS (Fall 2017)

The New River has been around for over 20 years, and in that time the digital world, and our readers' familiarity with that world, has changed drastically. In this year's Spring issue we take a moment to appreciate what still works from back in the early days of new media and the possibilities offered to us by its future.

We have been lucky enough to receive submissions from several past contributors this reading period, and have a pretty packed issue.

  4. Looking Back while Moving Forward: The Case of Concrete Poetry and Sankofa

This article considers the intersection between African oral tradition and electronic literature by exploring the potential of Sankofa to interact with concrete poetry in an electronic space. Sankofa is an example of the Adinkra, a set of symbols that were originally created and used by the Akan in West Africa. These symbols have literary value which this article looks at in ways similar to concrete poetry; examining Sankofa as concrete poetry in an electronic context enables a simultaneous dovetailing with as well as convergence from oral and print based modes of engaging with the text: aspects of oral tradition influence this exploration.

  5. Storytelling with virtual reality in 360-degrees: a new screen grammar

With reference to three recently produced Australian case studies, this article explores approaches to the conceptualization and writing of short narratives for the emerging medium of cinematic 360-degree virtual reality. Storytelling for this format involves a user-focused engagement with time and place. Whereas the viewer of classical narrative media, such as film or television, is for the most part passive, the VR viewer is 'present' as an active agent who engages with the unfolding narrative as either witness or participant. These factors present a number of challenges and opportunities for the creator of narrative VR, when considering viewer immersion and/or interaction in the 360-degree environment. The article presents a review of literature that interrogates the specifics of writing for VR, with a specific focus on 360-degree, immersive projects. By interrogating the form of three recently produced works, the author highlights emerging approaches to narrative structure, audience acclimation and the directing of viewer attention.
