Prehistoric Digital Poetry: An Archaeology of Forms, 1959-1995
In this book, the author, Chris Funkhouser provides a comprehensive historical, descriptive, and technical account of early works of computer-assisted poetry composition. Focusing on examples of digital poetry before the world wide web rather than on literary precursors to web experiments. Funkhouser demonstrates how technological constraints that would seemingly limit the aesthetics of poetry have instead extended and enriched poetic discourse. As a history of early digital poetry and a record of an era that has passed, this study aspires both to influence poets working today and to highlight what the future of digital poetry may hold. The book is divided into five different sections: origination, visual and kinetic design poems, hypertext and hypermedia, alternative arrangements and techniques enabled.

Digital poetry always involves mathematical concepts. Fusing together textual elements is an additive process, at very least. Combining files and presenting them via computer screens multiplies possibilities for poetry, and the sum, or sums, of the artistic equation are often worthy of the effort involved. Thus, what we factor into the equation, and how it is factored in, is important. Considering some of the successful works of digital poetry that appeared in the hypermedia journal Alire in France, and in other historical and contemporary works, I see a trait that emerges despite overt aesthetic differences and variant approaches in works produced that I wish to associate with a liberating and useful poetical concept that emerged in South America nearly a century ago.

Barbosa tem vindo a dedicar, desde há longa data, uma parte importante do seu trabalho, tanto criativo quanto teórico, à intersecção da literatura com as novas tecnologias, como o comprovam os dois volumes da então designada Literatura Cibernética, publicados nos finais da década de 70.
