    Programmatic or computational art is often, although not necessarily, related to art in other media: visual, performative, conceptual, and so on. The art systems of The Readers Project relate to writing and to reading, to our encounters with literary language. This project is an essay in language-driven digital art, in writing digital media. The Readers Project visualizes reading, although it does not do this in the sense of miming conventional human reading. Rather, the project explores and visualizes existing and alternative vectors of reading, vectors that are motivated by the properties and methods of language and language art.

  2. 1998 trAce Writer's Conference: Writers & the Internet

    The internet offers great opportunities for writers. There are fascinating new forms of writing to be discovered; interesting people to meet, and swathes of research material to be mined. But it also brings concerns. Authors are worried about copyright and intellectual property. They are wondering how they can earn money from working online. They fear that The Book may be dying. This conference brings together an international group of professional authors and educators with extensive experience of the internet to address some of these anxieties and provide informed opinion about the potential of the net for the artistic community.

    Socrates framed one of the fundamental objections to writing; it was "one-way", it fixed ideas, it required readers simply to follow someone else's argument - which is why he would put nothing in writing. But even Socrates would change his mind if he could be an online author. For online writing is two way, it engages readers to forge their own meanings, and to become a new generation of writers in the process.

    Incubation2 was the second trAce International Conference on Writing & the Internet, and the premier international event for writers working on the web. It provided a showcase for the writing of the future and offered a glimpse into the work of writers who use the internet to develop ground-breaking content: poetry with sound and images, personal histories, news, journalism, stories with multiple endings. This is writing on the web, for the web, and about the web.

  4. Nine Gestures for J.D. Salinger

    A poetic tribute to the writings of J.D. Salinger, this work explores Nine Stories (1953), by inviting participants to write their thoughts into a book in response to nine individual prompts, each corresponding to one of the stories. Interacting with the book reveals a series of poems that follow thematic gestures from the original writings.

    To interact, open the book to any one page, read the typed prompt and then write down either a single word, or short phrase as a response, writing onto the adjoining page’s writable section using the pen. A nearby screen responds by offering several composed verses with each inscription. When a section is filled, that gesture is considered complete.

  7. Reading Club

    Reading Club is a project started by Emmanuel Guez and Annie Abrahams in 2013. Eleven sessions were organized with more than 40 different “readers” in English and/or French based on text extracts from Raymond Queneau, from Mez and the ARPAnet dialogues to Marshall McLuhan, Michel Bauwens and McKenzie Wark. Guez and Abrahams experimented with different reading and writing constraints (color, duration, text-length, number of “readers”, etc.) and different performance conditions (online vs. live performance, with and without sound, etc.). In a session of the Reading Club, readers are invited to read a given text together. These readers simultaneously write their own words into this text given a previously fixed maximum number of characters. The Reading Club can be seen as an interpretive arena in which each reader plays and subverts the writing of others through this intertextual game.

  8. Post-memoires

    Post-mémoires est un projet d'autoportrait littéraire et graphique. Les post-mémoires sont des souvenirs condensés en micro-récit, inscrits sur un post-it, qui s'affichent sur différentes interfaces. Ces feuillets sont ici réunis dans une application tridimensionnelle où se dessine mon visage. Par ses mouvements dans l’espace d’exposition, le visiteur peut survoler cette surface et parcourir ainsi des visions de mon enfance. Face projette le temps dans l'espace en modelant mon visage avec mes souvenirs. Façade est une interface d'écriture pour moi, et de lecture pour vous. Facettes mélange mes souvenirs enfouis pour révéler l'inatendu du surgissement. Le galerie facebook ouvre un espace discutable. La préface explicite mon intention de partager une expérience intime. Ainsi, le projet Post-mémoires relève autant de l'entreprise autobiographique que de la recherche d'une forme singulière de langage. Mémoire Une entreprise autobiographique est un travail de sélection et d’organisation de souvenirs qui vise à recomposer une mémoire dans un sens chronologique afin d’apporter un témoignage personnel ou historique.

  9. Writing

    Writing (2012) was inspired by and built with Joe Davis’s Telescopic Text, pairing the possibilities of expanding, effacing essay with the musings of a Monson or a Mezzanine. An introspective, interactive non-fiction, the work unfurls, an exploration of the processes of composition as much as a finished literary product. As the piece grew to dozens of junctions and thousand of words, the editing interface slowed dramatically, each erasure oredit taking a minute or more. This in turn forced an accountability to first thought – it became easier to publically ‘rewrite’ mistakes, misspeaks and infelicitous phrases than to invisibly edit them away. The result is a thinking aloud on the (web)page, a map to the writer’s trains of thought for the reader to unfold and explore. Writing featured in the 2013 electronic poetry edition of Australian literary journal Overland.

  10. Reading, Writing, and Programming E-­Lit, Parts 1 and 2

    READING, WRITING, AND PROGRAMMING ELIT

    Wednesday, June 18: Reading and Writing (morning); Programming (afternoon)

    Workshop Leaders: Deena Larsen (deenalarsen[at]yahoo.com) and Joshua Fisher (admin[at]appoet.org)

    This is an all-day event in three parts, consisting of presentations and hands-on activities. The first two parts are intended especially for beginners: anyone who does not have deep familiarity with electronic writing, or wishes to extend or deepen an initial encounter. The third part is meant for both beginners and more experienced members of the community. Participants in workshops taking place earlier in the day may join the afternoon session (Part Three) at no additional charge. Registration is limited to 20 for Parts One and Two, 25 for Part Three; participants are encouraged to bring laptops.
