  1. Poetic Machines: an investigation into the impact of the characteristics of the digital apparatus on poetic expression

    This thesis aims to investigate digital methods of signification in order to examine the impact of the apparatus on poetic expression. This is done through a critical analysis of the translation process from analogue to digital, in the sense that even as we read a page we are in fact translating sight into sound. The resulting effects of this change in form are explored in order to understand their impact on meaning-making in the digital realm. Through this interrogation the comprehension and definition of ePoetry (electronic poetry or digital poetry) is extended, by exposing the unique affordances and specificities of digital expression. Digital poetry theorists such as Loss Pequeño Glazier posit that the emerging field of electronic literature is composed of interweaving strands from the areas of computer science, sociology, and literary studies. This is reflected in the interdisciplinary nature of this thesis, which necessitates an engagement with the broad areas of translation, literature, and digital media studies.

  2. Digital Poesi. Æstetisk Analyse og det Mediales Rolle i Kunstværkers Kommunikation

    ENGLISH SUMMARY Digital Poetry: Aesthetic analysis and the role ofmediality in the communication of artwork Digital poetry (language-based digital art) is a global, interdisciplinary movement consisting of poets, artists and programmers who study and develop opportunities for programmed writing. Digital poetry combines writing with animation, images and sound. There are moving letters, interaction and autogenerative programming. Some digital poems also consist of actual programming code. Digital poetry can be colourful, expressive, technologically advanced, organic, delicate and minimalistic. The thesis consists of analyses of selected examples of digital poetry and investigates, discusses and demonstrates how digital poetry can be analysed. This results in a wide range of theoretical issues concerning genre and intermediality, media philosophical questions regarding technologies of writing and issues related to programming, materiality, temporality and agency. The thesis is a methodological reflection on which concepts should be applied and what new set of questions should be asked in the analysis of digital poetry and contemporary digital art in a broader sense.

  3. Cybertext Poetry: Effects of Digital Media on the Creation of Poetic Literature

    Digital technologies have begun to affect the activity of creating poetry. This development does not threaten to supplant poetry in its written, oral, and other senses. Rather, it holds the potential to accentuate and extend its capabilities. My study discusses historical and mechanical issues related to literature and digital media, exposing how approaches to the creation of poetic texts are evolving as writing (in part) becomes machine-modulated. Aiming to chronicle the opening period of cybertext, these essays intend to expand the discourse and illustrate aesthetic properties of digital text. Theodor Holm Nelson invented the concept of hypertext in the 1960s. Hypertext, to Nelson, meant branching texts and "non-sequential writing." It is a specialized mode of multi-layered reading and writing enabling the integration of digital texts. My study advances hypertext by adopting the term cybertext to include other digital forms and possibilities. It continues the work of developing a vocabulary bridging poetry and cybertext, discussing contemporary theory and practice in this discipline.
