    A suite of a dozen kinetic poems programmed in Apple BASIC. Later, as the first versions became inaccessible, the works were recreated in HyperCard in the early 1990s (after bpNichol's death), and then in 2007 recreated in javascript for the web, and simultaneously the original BASIC and Hypercard files were republished for download.

  2. White-Faced Bromeliads on 20 Hectares

    White-Faced Bromeliads on 20 Hectares is a JavaScript investigation of literary variants with a new text generated every ten seconds. Its goals are as follows. (1) To present a poetic evocation of the images, vocabulary, and sights of Costa Rica's language and natural ecosystems though poetic text and visuals. (2) To investigate the potential of literary variants. Thinking of poems where authors have vacillated between variant lines, Bromeliads offers two alternatives for each line of text thus, for an 8 line poem, offering 512 possible variants, exploring the multi-textual possibilities of literary variants. (3) It explores the richness of multiple languages. (4) It mines the possibilities of translation, code, and shifting digital textuality. Having variants regenerate every ten seconds provides poems that are not static, but dynamic; indeed one never finishes reading the same poem one began reading. This re-defines the concept of the literary object and offers a more challenging reading, both for the reader and for the writer in performance, than a static poem. The idea is to be able to read as if surfing across multiple textual possibilities.

  4. Poesia luso-brasileira contemporânea: do verbo ao pixel

    This article intends to reflect upon the place of poetry in the teaching of literature and the formation of the reader, considering the recurrent metaphors and images in the interfaces of the
    discourse of the hypermedia, among the languages provided by the Technology of Information and Communication (TIC) in contemporary society. It aims to demonstrate the possible experiences of reading and aesthetic appreciation which offers to the user/reader for the exercise of creativity and autonomy in the construction of collective intelligence. In order to do so, it focuses on the production of the Luso-Brazilian literature in hypermedia with emphasis on the remarkable presence of the Portuguese experimental poetry in the construction of digital poetry and the Brazilian cyberliterature in present time.

    As poets continue to use digital media technology, functionalities of computing extend aesthetic possibilities in documents focusing attention on crafting verbal content. Utility of these machines and tools enables multiple types of compounded articulation (combinations of verbal, visual, animated, and interactive elements). Building larger public awareness of the mechanics of digital poetry, New Directions in Digital Poetry aspires to influence the formation of writing with media in literary society of the future, specifically as a record of a particular technological era.

    Claude Maillard and Tibor Papp’s “Dressage no. 7” is glaring example of anthropophagic inflection in early digital poetry. The authors, continuing to use the same language and themes established in previous editions of Alire, cast familiar words and phrases amidst a wider span of new visual contexts. Alternating graphical pages, verbal pages, and pages that incorporate both propel the narrative. Works in Maillard and Papp’s “Dressage” series address the diminishing status of civil liberties in general, inscribing their views in a new media format that revives the aesthetics of an earlier era with new purpose.

    written in java this applet gets a lot of rss feeds (in the french zone) in real time and composes, in real time also and as a work in progress, with them visual poems; each of the results are exported to my local computer in order to finally get, at the end of the 2013 year, some kind of archive of the "news" by which we are invaded each day---- and that we very often forget the day after! - it 's a kind of work about our "media-collective-memory". The words are treated in relationship with frequency in the news: the biggest are the most frequents. But not allways the most importants...

  8. Flash Script Poex: A Recodificação Digital do Poema Experimental

    In this article I analyze digital re-readings of experimental poems contained in the digital archive
    PO-EX: Poesia Experimental Portuguesa - Cadernos e Catálogos [PO-EX: Experimental Portuguese Poetry - Chapbooks and Catalogues]. This project was developed by the Center for the Study of Informatic Text and Cyberliterature (CETIC) at Fernando Pessoa University (Porto, Portugal). I consider how experimental poetics is applied and transformed in the processes of electronic remediation of visual and concrete texts by E. M. de Melo e Castro, Herberto Helder, José-Alberto Marques, Salette Tavares and António Aragão. While digital recreations redefine the source texts by means of specific programming codes, they also reveal the complex linguistic and graphical coding of the printed page.

    Este trabajo analiza la recepción de la poesía digital basada en la producción de Mallarmé, Apollinaire, Pound, Joyce y Cummings, con el objetivo de señalar la influencia de estos poetas en su construcción. A través del análisis de los poemas en un medio electrónico, encontramos algunos elementos de literariedades digitales, identificando algunas de sus características. Algunos poemas digitales instan al lector a una relación más interactiva, otros permiten una lectura de menos dispersión interpretativa, y hay poemas que explotan exhaustivamente los recursos del computador, y la postura del lector es la que determina la construcción del significado, independientemente de los medios de circulación de la producción.

  10. Concrete and Digital Poetics

    I argue that there is an intrinsic connection between concrete poetics as a theory of the medium (i.e., of language, of written language, and of poetical forms) and digital poetics as a theory of poetry for the digital medium. This link is clearly seen in the use of concrete poems as storyboards and scripts for electronic texts, both in composing text for graphic interface static display and for animation. This essay deals with the adoption of electronic media by concrete poets, with examples from the work of Brazilian poet Augusto de Campos (1931-), and Portuguese poets E.M. de Melo e Castro (1932-) and Tiago Gomez Rodrigues (1972-).
