    Rita Raley's presentation focuses on the use of IRC and SMS in multimedia installations, net-based projects, and street performances. Projects discussed will likely include "Listening Post" (Mark Hansen and Ben Rubin), "RE:Positioning Fear" (Rafael Lozano-Hemmer), "Urban Scrawl" (Sushma Madan and Neil Noakes), "TXTual Healing" (Paul Notzold), and "Simple Text" (Family Filter). While the chat messages used in "Listening Post" are datamined rather than solicited, the other projects are instances of user-driven media. One clear tension to explore, then, will be that between surveillance and participatory culture. Other themes and issues will include public vs. private space, locative media, and electronic English.

  2. Live Movies

    The presentation "Live Movies" will employ digital images and video clips to depict and discuss new media performance as treated in our recent book, Live Movies: A Field Guide to New Media for the Performing Arts. Live Movies documents the New Stage Technology Project, in which we have been engaged for the past five years at the Multimedia Performance Studio (MPS), and the work of our performance company, Cyburbia Productions. We will also discuss the Live Movies book as a resource for the field of new media art and performance.

  3. Code: Redact <Redact>

    The "Codework Project" is an NSF (National Science Foundation) funded exploration of codework, language, performance, and embodiment, in relation to philosophies of the analog and digital. The exploration has resulted in exciting work at a leading edge of digital media practice. The project is based at West Virginia University, and continues several years of collaboration between the art/writer Alan Sondheim, WVU's Center for Literary Computing (CLC), and the Virtual Environments Laboratory (computer sciences). The work employs a range of technologies to map and remap the 'obdurate real' of bodies into the dispersions and virtualities of the digital (and back again, into real/physical spaces). We're working with both analysis and experience of coding and codework in order to understand the natures of the real and virtual. How is the real read? How is the virtual? Is reading even appropriate here? These questions play out in a series of artworks (videos, films, performance, installation) and theoretical texts.

  4. Literary Programming (In the Age of Digital Transliteration)

    This paper is proposed as the second part of an essay, the first part of which was presented at DAC'98, having the overall title 'Performances of Writing in the Age of Digital Transliteration'. Part one of this essay raised questions -- contextualized by reference to Walter Benjamin and Friedrich Kittler, amongst others -- concerning the intrinsically digital characteristics of text, along with certain implications of these characteristics (and what they have entailed, specifically and especially: the Net) for traditional literary culture, for the latter's critique, and for textual, especially artistic textual practices.

  5. Instrument Making (Interview with Eric Loyer)

    Erik Loyer created the canonical early net-art pieces 'Lair of the Marrow Monkey'(1998) and 'Chroma'(2001). Not content with those genius works, he went on to creative direct the avant-garde net-journal Vectors, and designed the activist documentary Webby-award nominee 'Public Secrets'.

    Throughout Loyer's works there is a persistent synaesthetic edge: a concern with tactility and synchronized audio-visuals that gives his work abiding engagement. He thinks of himself as an instrument maker, and this tendency is apparent in his recent works: the best-selling 'Strange Rain' and a recent immersive graphic novel app "Upgrade Soul" which incorporates modular music mapped to gestures.

  7. Speculation: An Alternate Reality Game

    Speculation is a science fiction game directed by Katherine Hayles, Patrick Jagoda, and Patrick LeMieux that explores the greed-driven culture of Wall Street investment banks and the 2008 global economic collapse. Speculation belongs to the genre of Alternate Reality Games (ARGs). ARGs are not bound by any single medium or hardware system. Instead, these games use the real world as their primary platform. ARGs incorporate a range of media, including text, video, audio, phone calls, email, social networks, original software, and even live performance. Their stories tend to be broken into discrete pieces that players actively rediscover, reconfigure, and influence through their actions. Player networks created around ARGs are inherently social and tend to include collective problem-solving and participatory storytelling.

  9. Code as Ritualized Poetry: The Tactics of the Transborder Immigrant Tool

    The Transborder Immigrant Tool is a provocative mobile phone app by the Electronic Disturbance Theater (EDT) that provides sustenance to border crossers by leading them to water and guiding them with poetry. Although the tool can be applied to any border, the chief border it has been tied to and tested on is the US-Mexico border. The EDT present the project as an artistic disruption of the tired national political theater staged at that border. The piece refocuses attention on the basic human needs of those caught in the middle of the stale and stalemated divide. For the EDT, every part of the piece participates in this disruption not merely the finished app or the poetry but the code as well. In this paper, I ask, what would it mean for the code to poetic disruption? One set of poetry for the project created by Amy Sara Carroll offers instructions for desert survival. By presenting instructions as poems, she offers one entre into reading the source code of the app as poetry. Using the methods of Critical Code Studies, I read the code of TBT in light of and as part of the poetic intervention of this complex performance.

  10. On Writing & Digital Media (Performance Research 18:5)

    This issue of Performance Research will enfold an understanding of digital text within the context of performance studies, ordinary language philosophy and speech act theory, integrational linguistics, the performance of self and gender, and performance writing. In other words, we will be looking at the different modes of performance as they are manifest across the whole digital apparatus (dispositif). This includes machinic performance, the performance of codes and scripting, the performativity of language itself on the screen, the semiotics of the click, interactivity between digital language and the body, and how digital texts ‘perform’ us as social beings.
