  1. Walk This Way: Mobile Narrative as Composed Experience

    Raley examines mobile narratives, contrasting narratives that are simply narratives that are delivered to mobile phones, such as Japanese cell phone novels, with narrative experiences that are specific to their medial situation. That is "narrative that emphasizes the exploration of place and locality but is not strictly annotative." Rayley identifies three key terms of GPS and SMS-based narrative practice: experience, movement, and environment. Rita sees the participant in a mobile narrative as playing a function in the Nelsonian hypertext sense of branching, "performing on request." Having established a categorical frame, Raley reads a number of locative narratives including HundekopfItinerant, Ping, and 34N188W.

  2. Responsive Environments

    This paper introduces the concept of a responsive environ- ment which perceives human behavior and responds with intelligent auditory and visual feedback. Several exhibits of responsive environments, implemented by the author, com- bining computer graphics, video projection and two-way video communication are described. VIDEOPLACE, an evolving exhibit which defines a conceptual telecommuni- cation environment uniting geographically separated people in a common visual experience, is discussed at some length. Based on these examples a new art form of composed man- machine interaction is defined. Finally, practical applica- tions are suggested for the fields of education, psychology and psychotherapy.

    Digital approaches to information processing foreground the unique interdependence between
    knowledge and its representation that has been characteristic of western epistemology for the past five centuries. The essential role representation formats play in modern knowledge construction is generally accepted in all disciplines, attributing, learning and intellectual progress less to one's direct engagement with actual phenomena, and more to notational structures that convey its formulation. In this paradigm, knowledge follows exclusively from its theoretical articulation, not the other way around.

  5. Locative Audio Play

    The paper describes and reflects upon a research and development project specifically related to a sound installation – Listener (Hoem 2014) – where the purpose has been to examine artistic possibilities when staging an auditive user experience, via micro positioned mobile devices. Listener is augmenting an existing environment, adding a fictional layer, using sound as the only expression. The auditive text is experienced through headphones, connected to a location aware mobile unit, which is positioned by “beacons” (Bluetooth LE transmitters).

    Listener tries to relocate an environment, from Bergen railway station to the Bergen University College’s premises, using sound. To this environment we have added six fictional characters, and the user can listen to these characters’ cell phone calls. The text has to be experienced by moving around, as the sounds corresponds to the user’s position and orientation.

Typically, these stories have functioned as celebrations of (or ideological guarantors for) the virtues of the scientific enterprise. This genre, however, properly belongs to an earlier era in the twinned history of science and industrialization: an era armed with certainty, rationality, and faith in scientific progress.
