  1. Inner Telescope

    Inner Telescope is a poem created aboard the International Space Station (ISS) with the assistance of French astronaut Thomas Pesquet, who realized it on Saturday, February 18th, 2017. Inner Telescope was specifically conceived for zero gravity and was not brought from Earth: it was made in space by Pesquet following my instructions. The poem was made from materials already available in the space station. It consists of a form that has neither top nor bottom, neither front nor back. Viewed from a certain angle, it reveals the French word “MOI“ [meaning “me”, or "myself"]; from another point of view one sees a human figure with its umbilical cord cut. This “MOI“ stands for the collective self, evoking humanity, and the umbilical cord cut represents our liberation from gravitational limits. Inner Telescope is an instrument of observation and poetic reflection, which leads us to rethink our relationship with the world and our position in the Universe. Since the 1980s, I have been theorizing and producing poetry that challenges the limits of gravity, especially with my holopoems—written with light.

  2. OTTARAS: 2CONCRETE

    In the autumn 2014 I was reading in the TARP festival in Vilnius and in the ZEBRA film poetry festival in Berlin. This was motivating for extending my project in the direction of sound poetry. Meeting the Russian composer Taras Mashtalir in e-Poetry2013 in London and later in Bergen, has resulted in a great collaboration. Together we are OTTARAS, and so far we have produced six sound poetry tracks based on my earlier works and with videos made by Alexander Vojjov and Yan Kalnberzin.

  3. Poétique de la post-humanité

    Le langage devient un espace graphique d’exploration à partir de l’expression poétique de l’homme.

    En dialogue avec Jacques Donguy, Philippe Boisnard a pensé l’exposition “Poésie de la Post Humanité” à partir de documents et de propositions artistiques (Thierry Fournier, Beb-deum et de 3 holopoèmes d’Augusto de Campos, d’Eduardo Kac et de Richard Kostelanetz), afin de montrer que la poésie d’avant-garde ne propose pas que des formes esthétiques liées à la technique mais une autre appréhension de l’homme, de son devenir imprégné de son inventivité technique.

  4. The Waste Land

    The Waste Land is a long poem by T. S. Eliot, widely regarded as one of the most important poems of the 20th century and a central work of modernist poetry. Published in 1922, the 434-line[B] poem first appeared in the United Kingdom in the October issue of Eliot's The Criterion and in the United States in the November issue of The Dial. It was published in book form in December 1922. Among its famous phrases are "April is the cruellest month", "I will show you fear in a handful of dust", and the mantra in the Sanskrit language "Shantih shantih shantih".

    Eliot's poem loosely follows the legend of the Holy Grail and the Fisher King combined with vignettes of contemporary British society. Eliot employs many literary and cultural allusions from the Western canon, Buddhism and the Hindu Upanishads. The poem shifts between voices of satire and prophecy featuring abrupt and unannounced changes of speaker, location, and time and conjuring a vast and dissonant range of cultures and literatures.

    High Muck a Muck: Playing Chinese is an interactive poem, created through an interdisciplinary collaboration of 11 Canadian artists, programmers and community members. The project consists of an interactive website, 8 videos and an interactive gallery installation. 

    High Muck a Muck: Playing Chinese explores the theme of Chinese immigration to the west coast of Canada – both historical and contemporary – the tensions that exist in and between these narratives.

  8. GPT-based Generation for Classical Chinese Poetry

    We present a simple yet effective method for generating high qual- ity classical Chinese poetry with Generative Pre-trained Language Model (GPT)[5]. The method adopts a simple GPT model, without using any human crafted rules or features, or designing any additional neural compo- nents. While the proposed model learns to generate various forms of clas- sical Chinese poems, including Jueju(绝句), Lu ̈shi(律诗), various Cipai(词牌) and Couples(对联), the generated poems are of very high quality. We also propose and implement a method to fine-tune the model to generate acrostic poetry. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first to em- ploy GPT in developing a poetry generation system. We have released an online mini demonstration program on Wechat1 to show the generation capability of the proposed method for classical Chinese poetry.

  9. Yuefu

    Yuefu is a poetry generation system using OpenAI’s GPT, a Generative Pre-Trained natural language model pretrained on Chinese newspapers, that is fine-tuned with classical Chinese poetry. The developers write in their paper describing the system that it does not use "human crafted rules or features," or "any additional neural components". The system can generate poems in various formal, classical styles.  

    The example shown is translated by Ru-Ping Cheng and Jeff Ding for the ChinAI newsletter. It is an example of Cang Tou Shi, a Chinese version of acrostic poems. "In this case," the translator explains, "the first words of each line form the title of the poem: 神经网络 (neural networks)." Some other examples of the system's output are shown in a preprint published by the system's creators, and a translation of a Chinese newspaper article (entered into ELMCIP) provides translations of more examples.

  10. Waveform (Film)

    An experimental piece, drawing from the artist's Waveform project, this 10 minute film depicts a single, overhead shot of incoming ocean waves, which are scanned and analysed at various points by a machine vision system, which then parses the data gathered into short, poem-like texts. This film marks an attempt at using the dynamics of the moving image to better apprehend both the subject matter and the technical processes behind Waveform.

    This piece was displayed at the Peripheries: Electronic Literature and New Media Art exhibition held at the Glucksman Gallery, Cork, as part of ELO2019, in July 2019.
