  1. Galatea’s Riposte: The Reception and Receptacle of Interactive Fiction

    When I open the Spatterlight application to access “Galatea,” one of Emily Short’s many fabulous
    pieces of interactive fiction, a supple string of text hails me, flirts with me, and stops just short of
    calling me by name. The more I read, the more I learn about the source of the text itself, Galatea.
    “She” is a simple yet oddly convincing AI, one who is as reactive as she is acted upon, whose words
    emerge in response to my own, and whose short temper has shut down our collective story more
    times than I can count. As startling as her salutations initially seemed and as accustomed to her
    spurning me as I have become, I remain intrigued by Galatea’s overt and shameless invocation of her reader—in this case, me.

    Rob Wittig presents a slide-talk on the emergent artform of netprov (networked improv narrative). Play and go deep! Netprov creates stories that are networked, collaborative and improvised in real time. This is a remix of a talk given at the Electronic Literature Organization conference in Morgantown, West Virginia on June 22, 2012. Rob looks at the historical of netprov. from theatrical comedy to internet memes to literary fiction to alternate reality games. He describes his own recent netprov projects Chicago Soul Exchange and Grace, Wit & Charm.

  3. Cicatrix: Pain, Sex, and Dying in E-Literature

    This panel will deal with the relationship between extreme affect and electronic literature: How are pain, sex, and death _embodied_ in E-lit, virtual worlds, and textuality so that the abstract, for the reader, performer, or user, becomes empathetically embodied within hir? In other words, how can the skipping/skimming, which characterize the Net, be delayed, so that an actuality of politics and the body emerges? This panel will explore this and related issues.   4. Vectors, Scalar, and Magic: Emerging Platforms for E-lit Scholarship

    Emerging media forms do not merely excite artists; they also inspire critics to develop innovative scholarly works. For over seven years, the USC-based Vectors Journal has promoted webbased scholarship by developing and publishing projects that utilize experimental design interfaces, data structures, and digital authoring tools. In this presentation, Vectors’ Creative Director Erik Loyer, Info Design Director Craig Dietrich, and 2011 Fellow Mark Marino will present glimpses of critical works that use innovative platforms to explore their material. Loyer will begin with a presentation that looks at several of his collaborations with scholars to create the dynamic multimodal works of Vectors. Dietrich will follow with a look at the new platform Scalar, a publishing platform based on Vectors’ workflows and Semantic Web technology. Dietrich will also detail Magic, an experimental design fork of Scalar centered on the presentation of software code. Marino will then present his Scalar piece based on the Magic fork which analyzes a work of electronic literature, the Transborder Immigrant Tool, including annotations of the tool’s code.

With the advent of social media, we now log our own data in the service of multinationals as we
    seemingly embrace the arrival of a technological Big Brother. Several digital media artists, however, have turned the tables or, more exactly, the camera on themselves by using digital media and self-surveillance as a means of creating new digital narratives.

    When we are talking about the new media art and e-literature we need to emphasize a crucial shift in
    a very nature of today’s work of art; instead of a stable work of art (Ger. Kunstwerk) we are witnessing its transformation to the flexible service of art, to the performance and the event. As such it enters the present society shaped by the shifts from industrial society to postindustrial (and information) one, from material labor to immaterial, from Taylorist mode of production to postindustrial, e. g. a flexible one, from material artifact to its logo, from manufacturing to marketing of brands, from the economy of artifacts to the economy of financial markets and their products.

  7. The Presumed Literariness of Digital

    This presentation will challenge the current, too quickly determined relationship between
    the ‘literary’ and digital media. The presumed literariness of digital art--these days, anything
    from performance art to virtual sculpture work--muddles the already confused and meandering
    genre of electronic literature, leading away from acts of reading and remarking on text and its location in new media. Electronic literature began as a study of literary writing produced and
    meant to be read on a computer screen, opening up new possibilities for interactive and dynamic
    storytelling, utilizing the new medium’s ability for linking lexias. The literariness of this work
    is manifest: the work was primarily textual, the centrality of reading paramount. Textuality was
    at the heart of the work, thus the term electronic literature was appropriate and uncontested.
    Lately, ‘electronic literature’ is an umbrella-term for all things digital. A spectrum of genres
    and forms are included, among them video games, interactive fiction, digital art, and (virtual)

  8. Machine Libertine

    Various forms of computational linguistics and various forms of electronic literature have been aiming to create an algorithm capable of imitating natural human language. The highest Turing test approval for a chatterbot would be impossibility to tell this program from a real person. And therefore, poetry and story generators are often criticized as artificial and in need of further «humanization». In the paper I am going to prove the virtue of producing not human-like computer generated poetry and illustrate my points with the example of Machine Libertine project works.

  10. Electrifying Detail: Writing and Reading Triggers in Textual Zoom

    What can be said about the detail as an aesthetic category within the framework of an emergent electronic culture? The paper does not aim to draw a standpoint on the subject but rather to identify possible paths of reflection and inquiry starting from a particular model: a form of zoomable text (z-text) and interface (zoom-editor) allowing the text to be structured on levels of detail and explored by zoom-in and zoom-out. The questions that we intend to address concern the role of detail as a trigger fostering both the writing and the reading process. As an essential ingredient of the zooming paradigm - urging the writer to say and the reader to ask more about what has already been said - the detail acquires a prevalent character, that of trigger of the textual unfolding and core of the interface functionality.
