1. Translation, transmutation, transmediation and transmission in TRANSMIISSION [A DIALOGUE]

   This paper interrogates translation as a mode of creation and dissemination in one recent work of electronic literature, TRANS.MISSION [A.DIALOGUE]. To do this, translation is situated within the broader context of a string of trans variables: var trans=[lation, mutation, mediation, mission]. Trans- is a prefix meaning across, beyond, through. -lation comes from the Latin, borne, as in carried, or endured. In the translation of born-digital texts from one code language to another, what precisely is borne across, beyond, or through?

2. Engineering stories? A narratological approach to children’s book apps

   With the rise of smartphones and tablet pcs, children’s book apps have emerged as a new type of children’s media. While some of them are based on popular children’s books such as Mo Willems’ Pigeon books or Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit, others were specifically designed as apps. This paper focuses on examining book apps under the aspects of implied user strategies and narrative structure. Using a narratological framework that also takes into account the unique characteristics of the medium, a terminology for the analysis of book apps will be sketched out. Furthermore, an exemplary analysis of iOS book apps for pre- and grade school children comes to the conclusion that, far from offering the child users room for individual creativity, a large number of apps rather train their users in following prescribed paths of reading.

3. Affordances of an App - A reading of The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore

   In a relatively short time, apps have become highly popular as a platform for children’s fiction. The majority of media attention to these apps has focused on their technical features. There has been less focus on their aesthetic aspects, such as how interactive elements, visual-verbal arrangements and narration are interrelated. This article investigates how a reading of a «picturebook app» may differ from readings of the narratives found in printed books and movies. The discussion will be anchored in an analysis of the iPad app The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore. This app, which is an adaptation of an animated short film, relates the story of a book lover who becomes the proprietor of a magical library.

5. Psychoanalytic Interpretation of Blueberries by Susan Gibb

   La obra de ficción digital titulada Blueberries (2009) de Susan Gibb, publicada en la ELO (Organización de literatura electrónica) invita al lector/a a viajar dentro de la mente de la protagonista para descubrir sus experiencias reales e imaginarias en las que se examinan las nociones de género, sexo, cuerpo e identidad de una mujer traumatizada. En este artículo se exploran los modos verbales y visuales en esta ficción digital breve siguiendo patrones semióticos así como se interpretan los estados psicológicos por medio de componentes poéticos y tecnológicos. Se llevará a cabo un estudio comparativo de las consecuencias del trauma en la protagonista de la historia con teorías psicoanalíticas de Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan, así como las de las psicoanalistas feministas: Melanie Klein y Bracha Ettinger. Se estudiarán las reacciones de la protagonista ante la pérdida de la realidad, las alucinaciones y el complejo de Electra, así como el surgimiento de mecanismos de defensa y su uso de la creatividad artística como terapia curativa.

7. Antiabecedarian Desires: Odd Narratology and Digital Textuality

   Writing systems break temporal barriers and enable the sharing of knowledge and its preservation. As if they were living organisms, the narratological structures that conform textual communication are made up of replicative ordering principles and coding forms whose roots can be traced back to a Semitic proto-alphabetic script. However, literary history also includes many examples that, like viruses, have sought to disrupt the body of alphabetic textuality. This paper looks briefly at three fundamental artists, James Joyce, Jorge Luis Borges, William Burroughs, and at some contemporary pieces of electronic literature. Their questioning of ABC ordering patterns anticipates the debate on the importance or not of linear structures in representation systems.

A critique of the "invisible" interface, the "magic" of iOS that "just works," Emerson analyzes how interfaces promote or occlude human agency in computational environments. Anti-telelogical in order to interrupt the "triumphalist" narratives of progress that can characterize much writing about media, Reading Writing Interfaces stages its four chapters and postscript ("The Googlization of Literature") as "ruptures" to emphasize failure as a key element of media development.

   Neste texto, Philippe Bootz apresenta uma síntese da história e filiações da poesia eletrônica na França, enfatizando as tendências e o significativo papel da "poesia animada". O autor se concentra na vanguarda do grupo L.A.I.R.E. e da revista Alire, ambos fundados por ele e Tibor Papp em 1988 e 1989, respectivamente. Ainda para esse poeta e pesquisador, a literatura eletrônica também tem uma história própria. Essa história é um objeto de debate e posicionamento dentro de um campo de conhecimento, particularmente francês.
