  1. Story Generation

    In the field of artificial intelligence (AI) the automated generation of stories has been a subject of research for over fifty years. The underlying concept of "story" in story generation research is functional and does not imply any aesthetic notion. This is important because the evaluation of generated stories does not necessarily use the criterion of a readable and appealing text. Research on storytelling systems (computational systems capable of telling a story) initially arose as a part of the general trend in AI to build computational solutions that could undertake tasks that are easy for humans and difficult for machines. Some such efforts, such as computer vision and speech processing, have achieved success and given rise to commercial applications, whereas others, such as natural language understanding and story generation, still remain at the exploratory research stage.

  2. Shapeshifting texts: following the traces of narrative in digital fiction

    We have been referring to electronic literature as a corpus of texts with dynamic and
    multimodal features. A digital text can change during reading and assume the form of a
    collage work, a film or a game. Additionally, the text as a whole (Eskelinen, 2012),
    because of its own transient nature, might never be presented to the reader. The text
    can be played at such a pace as to be partly or completely ungraspable. Due to the range
    of forms assumed by the text, it might also be unable to return to an early state. This
    means that the reader might not be allowed to reread or replay the text in order to achieve
    a final or coherent version of it. This also means that there might be no original state to
    return to.
    Shapeshifting is the ability of a being to take the form of an object or of another being.
    This has been a common theme in folklore and mythology and it continues to be explored
    in games or in fantasy and science fiction films, as well as in literature. Since digital

  3. MATLIT: Materialities of Literature

    MATLIT: Materialities of Literature is an open access, peer-reviewed, online journal published by Coimbra University Press and the Centre for Portuguese Literature at the University of Coimbra. The journal addresses the material and technological mediations of literary practices, with a particular focus on printness, digitality, aurality, and intermediality. The research fields covered by the journal extend from literary studies to comparative media studies and to digital humanities. MATLIT uses the following working languages: Portuguese, English, Spanish, French, and Italian. Adopting an interdisciplinary and transmedial perspective, the journal is organized into thematic issues. Each issue has its own Call for Papers.

  6. APRJA

    APRJA is an open-access research journal that addresses the ever-shifting thematic frameworks of digital culture. APRJA stands for “A Peer-Reviewed Journal About” and invites the addition of a research topic to address what is considered to be key aspects of contemporary digital art and culture (and thereby complete each journal title). We take a particular interest in software studies, media archaeology, platform politics, interface criticism, computational culture and artistic research.

    As an open-access research journal, APRJA is freely available without charge to the user and his/her institution. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search or link to the full text of the articles in this journal without asking prior permission to authors or the publisher (under a creative commons license).

  7. Teaching Creative Writing with Python

    The course concerns the classic tension in poetry between decontextualization and juxtaposition: deciding what a text’s constituent elements are, breaking the text into those elements, and then bringing them back together in surprising and interesting ways. Students are taught not just about string processing and text analysis, but also about the poetic possibilities of using those techniques to algorithmically build new texts. Each semester, the course culminates in a live performance, in which each student must read aloud for an audience a text that one of their programs has generated.

  8. Infopoesia ou Poesia Informacional

    "Infopoesia ou Poesia Informacional" [Infopoetry or Informational Poetry] was published on October 29, 1987, in the Diário de Lisboa, in the supplement “Ler Escrever.”

    This benchmark article helped defining the state-of-the-art of “computational poetry,” by exposing the 1960s creative threads in the works by Nanni Balestrini, Herberto Helder, Margaret Masterman and Marc Adrian, and by additionally introducing new Portuguese and Brazilian authors, such as Pedro Barbosa, Silvestre Pestana, Antero de Alda, Erthos Albino de Souza and João Coelho. Furthermore, it disseminated for a general audience the relevance of computational programming in literary creation, by stressing that, for some authors, “a própria programação [é] o acto de criação poética por excelência, sendo o programa um poema” [the very programming (is) the act of poetic creation par excellence, being the program a poem], which facilitates different outputs.

  9. 'Roda Lume' by E. M. de Melo e Castro

    Roda Lume is a 2’ 43’’ videopoem, which was broadcast by the Rádio Televisão Portuguesa (RTP) in 1969 and subsequently destroyed by the station itself, and was reenacted by Melo e Castro from the original storyboard in 1986. The work is indeed surprising, as a poem that overlaps text, kinetic text, image, moving image and sound, anticipating and influencing various genres of digital hypermedia poetry mainly launched after the birth of the World Wide Web. It constructs a different notion of space-time, opening a “visual time” (Melo e Castro 1993: 238) of unfolding images and text that comprises a new reading perception.

  10. 'Electrònicolírica' by Herberto Helder and PO.EX Combinatorics

    Herberto Helder died. Helder is one of the most consistent and innovative Portuguese poets of the second half of the 20th century. Even if his later œuvre has been marked by a traditional experimentalist reworking of crafted language, whose poiesis engages with a very idiosyncratic vocabulary, one should not forget Helder’s eclectic trajectory. Having been influenced by, among other movements, Surrealism and international avant-garde experimentalism, Herberto Helder was, firstly together with António Aragão (1964), and secondly with Aragão and E. M. de Melo e Castro (1966), the editor of two important anthologies or cadernos (chapbooks), Poesia Experimental 1 [Experimental Poetry 1] and Poesia Experimental 2 [Experimental Poetry 2]. Both these anthologies opened up most of the major pathways of literary and artistic experimentalism in the 1960s, from which the PO.EX (Experimental POetry) movement emerged.
