  4. Missed Collections: Away From the Canon, Toward the Archive

    This paper expands on some of the questions raised by my presentation at the 2009 Digital Arts and Culture conference, held last December at UC Irvine. While examining the work of Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries (YHCHI), I asked what it might mean for a new media practitioner to intentionally disregard or shun many of the medium’s inherent capabilities. I was interested in the way in which YHCHI seemed to be protesting some of the assumptions or characteristics of the nascent canon of electronic literature, i.e. that works of new media are inherently multidirectional, adaptive, non-linear, etc.

  5. The New-Media Novel: The Intersection of Film, E-Lit & Story

    Advances in authoring tools are allowing a new kind of novel to emerge that resides at the intersection of print, film, and e-lit. I’d like to propose a reading from TOC: A New-Media Novel as its example of the new-media book.

    Often created by a team of collaborators working in sound, animation, and language, these new-media novels involve many of the same challenges and pleasures of working in film, theater or other collaborative arts. And yet, unlike theater or film, these multimedia novels are books: they are read; they offer the same one-on-one personal experience readers have always had through reading traditional novels. The first part of the presentation will be a tour through TOC: A New-Media Novel by Steve Tomasula, with art and design by Stephen Farrell, animation by Matt Lavoy, programming by Christian Jara, and music, art, and other contributions from 13 other artists.

  7. The Riderly Text: The Joy of Networked Improv Literatur

    This essay aims to discuss literary pleasure, new media literacy, and
    the Networked Improv Literature (Netprov). In particular, the author
    will discuss the challenges of “close-reading” the Speidishow, a
    Netprov enacted via Twitter (and a constellation of supplementary
    web-based media) over a period of several weeks. In the process of
    trying to understand the dynamics of reading on Twitter, the author of
    this essay created a Twitter account, @BrutusCorbin, and consulted
    with the writers about the plot structure. Through active engagement
    with the fictional world, Corbin quickly became embroiled in a
    sub-plot. Seeking distance from the active plots which Corbin was
    involved in, his author created two new characters, @FelixMPastor and
    @FrannyCheshire, to explore different aspects of the fictional world.
    Pastor and Cheshire were subsequently dragged into the story, as well.
    This piece will dig into the concept of the “readerly” and “writerly”
    text as identified by Roland Barthes in S/Z and The Pleasure of the
    Text and settle on a third term: “the riderly text.”

  8. Cave

    The Cave may be considered as an actual existing epitome of media, that is, “new” and “digital” media. Despite the proliferation of 3D stereo graphics as applied to film fi and games, the experience of immersion is still novel and powerful. Potentially and in theory, the Cave simulates human experience in an artificial fi environment that is socalled virtually real. Moreover, because of its association with computational, programmabledevices, anything— any message or media— can be represented within the Cave in the guise of real-seeming things. Caves could and, in fact, have allowed for the exploration of textual—indeed, literary—phenomena in such artificial fi environments. Caves have been intermittently employed for works of digital art, but uniquely, at Brown University, thanks to the pioneering efforts ff of postmodern novelist Robert Coover, there has been an extended pedagogical and research project of this institution’s Literary Arts Department to investigate, since 2001, the question of what it might mean to write in and for such an environment.

    Through a close formal analysis of two new critical collections, Paul Benzon ponders the state of media studies as field. Exploring the material and temporal paradoxes of anthologizing new media and posthumanism, he argues that “each of these texts takes shape, succeeds, and fails under the pressures and possibilities posed by the scalar demands of information.”
